OTTAWA PUBLIC HEALTH
Highlights – Special statement
– October 5
****************************
Today, Dr. Brigitte Pinard and I thought it was important for us to come together to share the same clear message: COVID-19 levels are too high in our communities, and we need to act now to slow the spread in the Ottawa-Gatineau National Capital region. We are two cities with one message.
Here in Ottawa, daily new numbers are at an all-time high. These are not records we want to be breaking. Hospitalizations and outbreaks continue to increase. We’re seeing more deaths. The virus can spread at an exponential rate if there continue to be opportunities for it to spread. As I said last Friday, this is our critical turning point. Our healthcare system is entering crisis territory. We need to act now or we risk the dire consequences of overburdening our healthcare system.
My colleague Dr. Pinard will tell you about the situation in the Outaouais region, but overall, our message is the same: We must limit our close contacts to our households. And when we have to be out in public, we must take the proper precautions to reduce the spread. In Ottawa, I am asking residents to limit their close contacts to those in their household plus essential supports. Of course, we have to keep everyone’s mental health in mind; if you live alone, we know one or two contacts outside your home are important social supports. And single parents in particular have noted the need to be able to draw on help from others, too.
We’re coming up to a challenging time with colder weather bringing us indoors. Now is a good time to think about a new winter hobby, think about how you can start new traditions for the holidays and embrace the relationships with those closest to you.
And speaking of holidays, we have a big one coming up: Thanksgiving. Like many other things, Thanksgiving will look and feel different this year. We are asking that you spend Thanksgiving only with those in your household. Perhaps this year, Thanksgiving can be a virtual supper by setting up a phone, tablet or laptop around the dinner table to connect with those outside your household. If we work hard to follow public health guidance and limit our close contacts now, we stand a chance at being able to celebrate Christmas or Hannukah or Kwanzaa with a few more members of our extended family in just a couple of months.
For now, we have to
do the right thing, right now to keep ourselves and each other safe.
Continue to follow the advice of your local public health unit, whether that be Ottawa Public Health or le Centre intégré de santé et des services sociaux de L'Outaouais, because we’re still here with you. And we will continue to be with you – two metres apart, but every step of the way. Merci. Thank you. Meegwetch.

COBALT Prize
****************************
A collaboration between the Toronto Blues Society and Paul Reddick, the intention behind the COBALT Prize Contemporary Blues Composition Award is to promote blues music through exploration of its form. The Cobalt Prize Contemporary Blues Composition Award was created and originally funded by Toronto-based Reddick, whose goal was to change the way audiences perceive and appreciate blues music. The Cobalt Prize receives hundreds of submissions from artists coast-to-coast, proving that deviating from standard blues riffs and clichés is a welcomed addition to the growing Canadian blues music scene.
Open to Canadian artists, the winning composition is judged on its ability to creatively utilize blues traditions within the broad contemporary musical landscape. Particular attention is paid to aspects of instrumentation, melodic invention, song structure, lyrics, and production possibilities. The successful song refreshes and enriches blues as an art form. Priority is given to songs that have been crafted specifically for the Cobalt Prize, however previously released material may be submitted.
The submissions are now open with applications being accepted until Friday, October 30 by 6 pm Eastern. The intention behind the COBALT Prize is to promote blues music through exploration of its form. The winner will be announced during one of the upcoming Maple Blues Awards live stream sessions in the month of February and a cash prize of $500 will be awarded. Previous winners of the Cobalt Prize Contemporary Blues Composition Award are Digging Roots (2015), Conor Gains (2016), Ann Vriend (2017 & 2019), Joe Nolan (2018), and Bad Luck Woman & Her Misfortunes (2020).

BLUES
ON THE RIDEAU
“COVID FIGHTER” FALL 2020 SERIES
The Fall Series is a 3-Engagement – 2 Shows per Engagement – Series, running once a month in September, October & November. Depending on how these shows go we will consider continuing with a Winter (January, February, March) and Spring (April, May, June) Series. The Series will feature Duos & Trios playing great “sit-and-listen” Blues.
Full COVID safety protocol will be TOP PRIORITY at all times. 50-person capacity (half the normal) with 6’ distancing between tables, 12’ distancing between the artists and the nearest audience member. All staff will be wearing masks. Everyone entering The Cove will be required to wear masks and when circulating in the room (but they can be removed at the tables). Hand sanitizer will be everywhere, and all will be encouraged to use it regularly throughout the night, not just on entering and leaving the building. Use of bathrooms will be restricted to one person at a time.
Plated meals will be brought to the tables by Cove staff instead of a buffet. All surfaces will be sanitized regularly. We believe that if everyone follows these safety measures, we can all safely enjoy a night out of great LIVE music!
Of course, everything depends on the COVID-19 situation. If it worsens and indoor gatherings are banned again then the Series will be postponed. On the other hand, if things improve and full capacity gatherings with no social distancing required are allowed again, we may return to full band shows. However, given the current situation, we don’t see than happening anytime soon.
Performances
will include a delicious full course meal, the show and Door Prizes with
proceeds going to support different local charities – all for only $70 pp (plus
HST).
Note:
To date the BOTR @ The Cove Series has raised over $74K for local Westport
charities.
ADVANCE
RESERVATIONS are required for all Shows and we encourage everyone to book ahead
to avoid disappointment – especially with the reduced seating capacity.
CALL
THE COVE at 613-273-3636
Well-priced accommodation is available at The Cove and nearby B&Bs for those who want to stay overnight.

This isn’t a typical year and this isn’t a typical Festival of Small Halls. When the ‘Team Behind Bluesfest’ first launched the Ontario Festival of Small Halls, in August of 2014, they started with small steps – staging music events in historically important venues in a few small towns and villages near Ottawa, in Ontario, and featuring some notable Canadian talent. BLUES FESTIVALS
– NEXT YEAR?
****************************
THE
18th ANNUAL BLUES FESTIVAL GUIDE MAGAZINE
https://bluesfestivalguide.com/emag/2020/
Blues
music is America’s original roots music. It is still being picked on the
front porches of tar-paper shacks, but just as frequently, it is fired up loud
and proud in front of a barroom (or festival) crowd.
Blues reflects hardship, trouble and strife, but also perseverance and strength
of character – to know the blues is to be in touch with your true spirit and
soul. The Blues Festival Guide is committed to the process of
presenting blues to a wider audience, and therefore offers a weekly, electronic
newsletter: Blues Festival
E-Guide (free subscription) and the popular annual
national print (and digital) magazine which comes out each spring.
“With so many festivals postponing or canceling, it was uncertain if we would publish
it this year, but the readers kept asking,” says publisher, Kaati Gaffney.
“We received countless personal calls and emails from advertisers and readers
alike and have been bombarded with magazine ad and subscription orders. It seems
the more we all sat at home during this pandemic, the more we thought about
music and its ability to generate well-being and connection. Even though
festival offerings are slimmer this year, there are still quite a few events planned
for the summer and fall.”
Blues legend Bobby Rush calls the magazine: The roadmap to
everything blues. Indeed, the articles offer something for everyone, all blues
related, of course. This year’s engaging editorial from aficionados in the
blues community includes articles from Grammy winner, Victor Wainwright,
Mitch Woods, Reverend Billy C. Wirtz and Roger Stolle among others.
