Dan Doiron
Bar Robo, 692
Somerset Street West
Tuesday, August 14
South Branch Bistro,
Kemptville ON
Thursday, August 16
Friends
say they don't recognize him without a guitar strapped on, as Dan Doiron has
been addicted to the raw energy of the electric guitar since he formed his
first band at age 13 in Port Hood, Cape Breton, Canada. A blazing spitfire
guitarist, Dan fuses potent guitar riffs and grooves with unique lyrics
reflecting his views on everyday life, ensuring an emotional, thrilling musical
ride at every band and solo show.
He’s
profoundly committed to the music, crafting his own style that draws upon over
forty years of his traditional and modern guitar studies and experiences as a
musician, songwriter, music educator, (B.MUS.Ed from Dalhousie University with
a major in classical guitar), National guitar clinician, (Roland Canada), and
recording engineer. Dan is also dedicated to sharing that passion and
knowledge and has developed a diverse variety of workshops and clinics that
focus on guitar technique and improvisation, songwriting, and incorporating
technology to assist musical growth. He’s experienced in presenting to all ages
and levels and especially enjoys the opportunity to inspire the next
generation of musicians through “Blues in Schools” presentations.
After
many years as a sideman, in 2011 Dan stepped out as a solo recording artist,
earning both East Coast Music Award and Music Nova Scotia nominations for his
debut CD, “Even My Guitar Is In Love With You”. A torrential body of multi-award
nominated work has followed and his fourth album “Livin’ Centre Stage” was
released in early 2018.
In
October 2017 Dan and his band won the East Coast Blues Society’s “Maritimes to
Memphis” competition for a second time, awarding them the honour of
representing Atlantic Canada at the worlds’ largest Blues competition, the
International Blues Challenge (IBC) in Memphis, where they introduced songs
from “Living Centre Stage”, the new album which
evolved from Dan’s Live Centre Stage project; an initiative to
inspire others to follow their passion regardless of their age or stage in
life. (www.LiveCentreStage.com).

NAC PRESENTS
Shakura S’Aida
NAC Azrieli Studio, 1
Elgin Street
Saturday, September
29 @ 8 pm
Shakura’s
long-simmering career initially moved into high gear in 2008 with a triumph at
the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, when she earned the runner-up
position, competing against more than 100 bands from more than 20 different

CanAfrica Blues

Doc MacLean and Albert Frost

Monday, October 1
Contact
Dave Brennan for ticket info elwood66@videotron.ca
From
Doc: This year's "CanAfrica Blues" theme features my good friend
Albert Frost. How cool is that? I met this West Cape, South Africa based artist
during my Zulu Skies Tour in 2016. Since then, we've had a ball performing at
some of Africa's best theatres and festivals. This is a guy who counts Lonnie
Johnson, Jimi Hendrix, and Ali Farka Toure (who he actually played with) among
his top musical influences. He does rock, folk, jazz, traditional west African,
and blues. He's a real blues guy. But he's not terribly concerned about genre.
Or confined by it. Music is a language that comes of stories, and in Frost's
Africa there is no shortage of stories. South Africa has long been a unique
musical cauldron, and Albert's art reflects this. This year, he's my guest on
my Blues Highway across North America. CanAfrica Blues. I'm thrilled to have
him along.
Ride
shotgun on an epic, blues road tour as Doc MacLean and Albert Frost unite in a
four-wheel, continental drift. Mixing Delta with west Africa, Son House with
Ali Farka Toura, electric with acoustic, new stories with old... This
Canadian-African collaboration will surprise and delight as it rolls out across
ten Canadian provinces and a couple of territories.

NPR
from Canton NY
For those who live south of the city, OBS
member Bob Cavan notes that the National Public Radio (NPR) radio signal at
89.5 FM in Canton NY comes in pretty strong in Manotick. Bob recommends two
shows in particular. Bob says “The Blue Note” Tuesdays 3 pm-5 pm, and “The
Radio Bob Show” Wednesdays 3 pm-5 pm are both excellent shows –
blues, ‘50s & ‘60s, rock & roll, R&B.

Unsung
and On The Side
With
Carolyn Fe
Tuesdays,
7-9 pm
Re-broadcast Saturday 10 am – noon &
Sunday 2-4 pm (all times EST)
It’s all about the Blues, Jazz and its
derivatives from around the globe and just around the corner. Songs rarely
heard, from the very first recordings all the way to indie artists who
consciously push the envelope to the next generation sounds of the genre; some
older releases will be spun - just because the album in old, doesn't mean it's
forgotten, thus the "On The Side" part of the show's title.
