starring
Jackie Richardson
NAC Theatre, 53 Elgin Street
April 24 – May 11; 90 minute show (no
intermission); tickets from $30
Produced
by Belfry Theatre (Victoria, BC)
Before Elvis sang ‘Hound Dog’ and Janis Joplin belted out
‘Ball & Chain’, Willie Mae Thornton had already been there and done that.
Her powerful voice, sexy songs, and larger-than-life stage presence made her a
blues legend. In this musical, written for and starring Jackie Richardson –
“Canada’s first lady of jazz” – you’ll be part of the scene at a ‘70s club in
L.A., where Big Mama tells her story and sings the blues – which she once
described as “nothing but life, good food, good times, and good sex.”
Guaranteed to rock your soul.

The 17th edition of
Virée Blues Boréale presents
The Mike Goudreau Band
CD Release – “Time For Messin’ Around”
Bar Bistro Le Troquet, 41 Laval Street (Old
Hull sector), Gatineau
Wednesday, April 24 @ 8 pm; $15
14
albums in 20 years on top of 6 other musical projects on the go and all that
with great success, thousands of concerts and performances at festivals–
notably 7 times at the Montreal International Jazz Festival, at Blues at
Tremblant and 5 shows at Virée Blues Boréale – a countless number of prizes,
nominations and rave reviews and over 300 songs which can be found either on
his 14 albums, on “compilation jazz and blues” albums as well as on TV programs
spread all over the world. You just read the shortest and humblest version
from the impressive resume of this key figure of Canadian Blues. One year after
the launch of his previous album here at Virée Blues Boréale, when he came to
celebrate his 20 years of career and that of the Boppin Blues Band, Mike
Goudreau is back, this time with the Mike Goudreau Band, to launch his latest opus: “Time For Messin' Around”.
Already on the DAWG FM 101.9 chart, in 13th position, this multi-facetted album is inspired by the music of BB King, Carlos Santana, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Robert Cray, ZZ Top and Brian Setzer, and occasionally slides towards some funk. Comprising 11 songs with 8 new compositions and 3 covers, this is a "party" vibe album, with the first track that sets the tone immediately, right on to the last track. A few funk rhythms, Texas shuffle, country blues, blues rock, Southern rock vibes that'll make you want to dance your Blues away! Also a sizzling authentic and soulful slow blues sung in French – one of Mike's trademarks for the past 20 years and counting. And this song in French not yet on Quebec’s radio is already regularly being played by a Toronto commercial radio station!

John Carroll & the Epic
Proportions
with
special guest Ken Voita
Black Sheep Inn, Wakefield QC
Friday, April 26 @ 8:30 pm; tickets
$10 (advance), $15 at the door
It’s gonna be another rocking night
with John Carroll & The Epic Proportions at Canada's music hotspot The
Blacksheep Inn in Wakefield, QC. This time with special guest Ken Voita!
John Carroll's music fits comfortably into a
variety of genres and time-periods, drawing heavily on traditional blues and
country folk, all the while synthesizing the eclectic elements of his
music into a coherent contemporary and colourful sound. John Carroll's songs are well complimented by
his band, The Epic Proportions - top-shelf Ottawa musicians Olivier Fairfield (percussion), Phil Charbonneau (bass, upright
bass) & Fred Guignon (lap
slide, electric guitar). John and his band stretch the limits of their genres
by visually interpreting John's song-craft through sound
that defies any predictability, but has its roots in blues, jazz, country folk
and rock ‘n' roll. They've packed the house every
time they've played The Black Sheep and they are gonna do it again! 'Robots'
nearly brought the audience to their knees last show!
There will be a
bus for those of you who'd rather drink than drive. Bus tix are $15 return.

Brandon
Isaak,
aka Yukon Slim, is a blues balladeer with a monster guitar technique and a
soulful, kicked-back voice. He effortlessly channels oldstyle blues, infusing
them with just a hint of country. His most recent album, “Bluesman’s Plea”, picked up a nomination for Blues
Recording of the Year at the 2012 Western Canadian Music Awards.
With his lonesome bluesman drawl, a baritone that comes
from deep within his soul, and fingers that seem to caress the frets of his

Edgar is a prolific writer. Over the years he has kept busy working and appearing in film, television and releasing original material. He has toured regularly with his own band as well as The Ringo Starr Allstar Band. Edgar brings a band with him that matches his talent and energy.
This is a special tour. Edgar and Kim are friends. They are both at their peak and they are both very personable down to earth people. When you come to this show, you will get a chance to meet the artists and get an autograph.
Kim Simmonds of Savoy Brown....legendary...
a Blues/rock institution... true innovators. These are just a few of the ways
Savoy Brown has been described over the past forty years by music critics and
fans.
One of the earliest of British Blues Bands, Savoy Brown, with founder guitarist Kim Simmonds at the helm, helped launch the 1967 UK blues boom movement that brought blues music back to the USA invigorating the style forever. In the process, the band became part of the framework that launched the rock and roll music of the 1970s.

He is a legend whose exceptional guitar playing has gotten better over the years. Kim Simmonds of Savoy Brown's set includes all the classic songs that you want to hear, played better than ever.

Chris Antonik
CD Release “Better For You”
Rainbow, 76 Murray
Street
Saturday, May 11
In 2010, Canadian blues guitarist, singer and
songwriter Chris Antonik arrived onto the National and International blues
scene with his self-titled debut album which received widespread critical
acclaim, placed in the Roots Music Report Top 100 charts for over a year, and
garnered Antonik a nomination for Best New Artist of the Year at Canada’s
national Maple Blues Awards. After extensive touring and major blues
festival appearances in Canada in 2011 and 2012, Chris now returns with his
highly anticipated follow-up “Better For You”. “Better For You” is a
highly personal and reflective album for Antonik, dealing with rebuilding
relationships, learning to put others first, and developing a positive moral
code in a world full of blues.
With Antonik on the majority of lead vocals,
guest vocalists include: two-time Grammy award-winner Mike Mattison (The Derek
Trucks Band, The Tedeschi-Trucks Band), 2013 American Blues Music
award-nominee Shakura S’Aida, and the incredibly soulful Josh Williams (The Fat
Cats), who also features on keyboards throughout the album. The
electrifying and eternally funky Chris Chiarelli (drums) and Andrew Taylor
(bass) once again hold down the rhythm section. Other guest artists
include: blues Juno award-winners Steve Marriner (MonkeyJunk) and Julian Fauth,
as well as Canadian music veterans Suzie Vinnick, and Richard Underhill, who
arranged all the horns on the album. Co-produced by Antonik and Ted Onyszczak,
the album was recorded by Grammy award-winning engineer Jeremy Darby (U2, Mick
Jagger, Colin Linden) at Toronto’s Canterbury Studios, and includes 10 original
songs written and co-written by Antonik, and one cover song.

Ross Neilsen & Conor Gains
Rainbow, 76 Murray Street
Friday, May 24 @ 9 pm
Canada’s hardest
working blues rock musician, Ross Neilsen, does it right. He’s taking strong,
timeless material to the place that matters: The People. Proving hard work pays
off Neilsen has been honoured with a nomination for Best New Artist at The
Maple Blues Awards in 2010, two Rising Star nominations from CBC, back to back
Blues Album of the Year nominations from the East Coast Music Association, a
win for Best Blues Recording for Redemption at the 2010 MusicNB awards and in
2012 Neilsen was a semi finalist in the solo/duo category at the International
Blues Challenge in Memphis, TN. He is a real, old-school kind of artist. Write.
Tour. Record. Tour. Repeat.
Songwriter and blues guitarist
extraordinaire, Conor Gains has
performed with the BB King All stars, in Nashville and Memphis, and was
invited by the late Les Paul to join him on stage at New York’s Iridium Jazz
Club – all before his 16th birthday! Now, still 18 years of age, Gains
has been collaborating with fellow Cambridge, Ontario musicians Vic Freitas
(Drums) and Jeremy Patey (Bass) for the past two years. The results have been
staggering. The Conor Gains Band won the Grand River Blues Society’s ‘Road to
Memphis’ competition and represented the region in the International Blues
Challenge in Memphis January 31st – February 4th, 2012. The band made an
enormous impression there receiving invitations across North America. As
a songwriter Gains is blossoming and gradually introducing more of his original
songs into the band’s setlist. Two years ago he also had the privilege of
writing a song with Grammy Award winner Dan Hill who said of the young man ” I
swear he’s brilliant.” The band’s debut album “The Junction Sessions”
was released January 28th, 2012 and features eleven Conor Gains original songs
with special guest Shakura S’Aida, the 2011 Maple Blues Award Winning vocalist,
appearing on two tracks.

High Spirit Blues
with
Peter Karp & Sue Foley & their band
Chalmers United
Church, 212 Barrie Street, Kingston ON
Sunday, May 5; 8-10
pm; advance tickets $20
On the heels of their 2nd CD release “Beyond
the Crossroads” and 9 months on tour which brought them across the US, Canada
and Europe Peter Karp and Sue Foley along with their band will present a new
show called High Spirit Blues.
The High Spirit Blues show will be featured in Churches,
Town Halls and Festivals across America and will bring together elements of
Blues and Roots Music with high energy Spirituals.
“Our aim is to uplift people” says Foley, “We want
everyone walking out feeling better than when they came in.”
“We're writing songs with themes in
mind. Positivity, renewal, absolution." Karp added, "These
times are trying - in the heart and in the streets. Time to fire up the amps
and blow heat."
Peter Karp is a gifted, award winning singer/songwriter
and American troubadour. He’s a master songsmith, an accomplished guitarist and
pianist who repeatedly transfixes audiences across the US, Canada and Europe.
Critics compare his songwriting to John Hiatt and John Prine with impressive
guitar and slide licks infused by his love of Albert King and Elmore James.
Peter Karp personifies the amorphous Americana sound, seamlessly blending roots
music with a high sense of entertainment.
Sue Foley from Ottawa, Canada is considered to be one of
the finest blues/roots artists working today. At 16 she embarked on her
professional career. By 21 she was living in Austin TX and recording for
legendary blues label Antone’s Records. Throughout the ‘90s she took to the
road with her paisley Telecaster and honed her craft working/sharing the stage
with such artists as BB King, Buddy Guy, Lucinda Williams and Tom Petty. In
2000, after moving back to Canada Sue won the
prestigious Juno award and a record breaking 17 Maple Blues Awards.
