MAPLE BLUES AWARDS

The Toronto Blues Society will be celebrating the 17th annual
Maple Blues Awards by honouring nationally and internationally recognized
Canadian blues artists from across the country on January 20, 2014. The
nominees are recognized both for their talent as well as their contribution to
the growing Canadian blues music scene.
Montreal’s Queen of the Blues Dawn
Tyler Watson and Ottawa’s JW-Jones, both accomplished and
internationally recognized blues artists, are set to take command of the
"blues goes uptown" not-to-be-missed night out.
Watson and Jones will both
perform at the upcoming 17th annual Maple Blues Awards gala on January 20, 2014
at Koerner Hall in Toronto. The Maple Blues Awards is Canada’s national blues
celebration, recognizing outstanding musical achievement and gathering blues
musicians and music fans from across the country each year.
The January 20th gala event is
considered to be the premier blues event of the year. Tickets for the
not-to-be-missed Maple Blues Awards, held at The Royal Conservatory's Koerner
Hall in Toronto, are on sale now for $35 - $65 and can be purchased at the

As one of Canada's hardest working and most
prolific blues guitar virtuosos, David Gogo has amassed a worldwide fanbase and
an impressive list of accomplishments. He has earned four JUNO nominations, the
2012 Western Canadian Music Award for Blues Recording of the Year, the CBC
Saturday Night Blues' Great Canadian Blues Award for a lifetime contribution to
the blues in Canada, and has twice been named Maple Blues Guitarist of the
Year. In March 2013, he performed as the supporting act for blues legend B.B. King for the third time in his
career, this time at the Port Theatre in Gogo's hometown of Nanaimo, BC.
Before writing and recording his latest
album, “Come
On Down”, Gogo took a pilgrimage along the Blues Trail starting in
Memphis and traveling through Mississippi, Arkansas and Alabama. Highlights of
his southern adventure included sitting in with local musicians at The Shack Up
Inn, Ground Zero, and Red's in Clarksdale, Mississippi. He appeared as a guest
on Sonny Payne's renowned ‘King
Biscuit Radio Hour’, and toured the legendary Fame, Sun, Stax, and
Willie Mitchell's Royal Studios. Gogo also traveled to towns mentioned in
Robert Johnson songs, poured bourbon on Johnson's grave, and even went down to
Rosedale with his rider by his side, as those famous ‘Crossroads’ lyrics proclaim.
Inspired by his journey through the
birthplace of the blues, Gogo wrote six original tunes and combined them with
six reinvented yet classic covers to create a new album that not only honours
traditional blues but also gets you dancing with some good old gritty rock and
roll. “Come
On Down” takes you to a place where Robert Johnson meets the Rolling
Stones and Fleetwood Mac meets Ray Charles. It's a wild ride that Gogo
navigates with ease, ingenuity and style.

From the Great
Northern Plains of Western Canada, Little Miss Higgins struts and serenades her
way, guitar in hand, lips blazoned red, onto any stage. As if she just drove in
off the back-road of another time with gravel dust and a sunset trailing behind
her, this pocket-sized powerhouse plays music brewed up in old-time country
blues sprinkled with a little jazz and maybe a hint of folk. Whether it’s songs
about passion or songs about panties, she writes about real things in a rooted
and poetic way.
For her newest
release, “Bison Ranch Recording Sessions”, Little Miss Higgins teamed up with a
very talented quintet of musicians from Manitoba. She calls them the Winnipeg
Five—Jimmie James McKee on trumpet, Eric Lemoine on banjo and pedal steel,
Blake Thomson on guitar, Patrick Alexandre Leclerc on upright bass, Evan
Friesen on drums and all five of them sing harmonies. As they play music in a
similar vein as Higgins, it was a fitting alliance both onstage and in the
studio...well, not quite a typical recording studio. With new songs waiting on
the sidelines, the six of them decided to record in a barn, a barn on a bison
ranch in rural Manitoba.

In a Rolling Stone interview, Dylan mentioned that if he ever started a label, Redbone would be the first artist he wanted to record. Most folks were introduced to the man during his network debut on Saturday Night Live in 1976, where he showcased his indelible version of “Walkin’ Stick.” In a year typified by amplified arena rock, Redbone’s intimate, low-key delivery proved to be a jolting antonym. Since then he’s played numerous talk shows, and functioned as a favorite guest of Johnny Carson.
If there is one common element to Redbone’s diverse music it’s his mastery of his acoustic guitar. It is easy to get lost in his stage exploits (which often gravitate between vaudeville and performance art) and overlook what a truly fine player he is – finger picking with a ragtime bounce of jumping between chords with the grace of a hurdler. (Maybe the analogy should be with the grace of a card shark, because he makes it look so effortless it can often be deceiving.)

Steve Hill got an early start as a professional guitar player at
the age of 16. By the time he was 20 he was already doing more than 200
gigs a year, which lead to the success of his first album in 1997. The
album was voted Best Canadian Debut Recording by Vancouver’s Real Blues
magazine who also proclaimed Hill to be the best young Blues guitar player in
North America!
In 2012, Hill revisits the blues with the album “Solo Recordings Volume
1″. Probably his rawest album ever, it
features Hill not only on guitar and vocals, but also on bass drum, hi-hat,
shakers and whatever he can do with his feet at the same time that he plays
guitar and sings! Recorded live in the studio (with NO overdubs), it’s the
sound of a man that has lived through a lot. 15 years after his first album,
you can hear and feel a maturity that can only exist out of experience. Steve
Hill “Solo Recordings Volume 1” proves once and for all that Hill is one of the
best guitar players in North America, and a great singer-songwriter as well.

Carlos is one of those
players whose music is so advanced that when it comes to awards, it's either
retire the category or rephrase the question to "Best Harmonica Player Not
Named Carlos". This includes two Gold Medals from the Hohner World Harmonica
Championship in Trossingen, Germany, as well as multiple national awards in
Canada which includes Carlos’ eight time Harmonica Player of The Year wins out of fifteen years of the
Maple Leaf Blues Awards.
To say he plays the
harmonica is like saying "Jimi Hendrix plays guitar". He blows the blues harp through a prism – suddenly it
seems he's holding every colour in the musical rainbow right there in his
hands. Simultaneously
sophisticated and raw, his playing blurs the boundaries between blues and jazz
(hence the name
for his band The Blues Mongrels). The emphasis is on blues, but they are not
afraid to merrily traipse off in other directions delivering a seamless fusion
of New Orleans second line grooves, swing, Latin, hip-hop or ska melodies, to
swampy roots rock.
The Blues Mongrels are:

CanadAfrica is the
meeting and collaboration of two passionate and award-winning musicians:
Canadian Mike Stevens and Ghanian Okaidja Afroso. On their debt CD together,
“Where’s The One”, these two master musicians (Stevens – harmonica and vocal;
Afroso – guitar, cajon, gyil, gourd and vocal) have created a place for the
complex interlocking rhythms of West Africa to meet with the soulful and rich
melodies of North American blues and country. The melding of these two musical
cultures has created new music that is truly stunning and not to be missed.

and Okaidja is Montreal’s Michael Jerome Browne. Another master musician, Sing
Out magazine calls him “one of today’s most accomplished interpreters of
traditional musical styles.”

7:30.
We're taking
advantage of the more intimate 4th stage for our annual December gospel
celebration. We have Ernie on piano & vocals, along with some of Ottawa’s
best musicians on drums, bass and guitar, including Don Cummings on the Hammond
B3. As well, we welcome the return of NYC-based sax player and arranger
Michael Webster, and the sweet & soulful sounds of the London Trio Plus —
seven singers, renowned as Ottawa’s best gospel vocal group. And again, we’re
thrilled to have Iyono Ede with us as special soloist, who delights every crowd

engagements for Presidents and Kings, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band of New

since 2005, the boys from St. Peter Street bring their infectious holiday
spirit to Ottawa for the first time! The band will perform seasonal favorites
such as "Blue Christmas," "Swinging In A Winter Wonderland"
and "Bells Will Be Ringing" in their much-loved New Orleans
traditional jazz style.

The 9th year for what has become one of the
most popular Blues Series in Canada, the first BOTR show takes place October
25, then one show a month (December excluded) right through to May. As in the
past all BOTR Shows are fundraisers for different Westport charities. To date
over $45,000 has been raised and the goal this year is to hit another $5,000.
For the third season in a row, despite higher costs and inflation, the price for these nights is staying the same - $60 (plus HST) which includes a delicious all-you-can-eat buffet served up by The Cove, the Show, dancing and a donation to charity.
