Be COVIDWise to keep our schools and businesses open
Lastly, we continue to see a rising number of individuals
testing positive and outbreaks in school settings are following. We are
also seeing more exposures to COVID-19 in some businesses. No one wants to
close schools and no one wants to see businesses close – to do so
would have a detrimental impact on our community both economically and
otherwise.
At the end of the day, it’s simple: we must continue to be COVIDWise to keep COVID-19 out of schools and businesses.
I know people miss their friends and loved ones. I know you want to see each other, and everyone has been working hard at coming up with new, safer ways to be social.
I’m asking everyone to keep doing the right thing. If we continue to work hard now, we have a better chance at seeing the benefits of our efforts sooner.
No action is too small. Every protective measure we can take matters to reduce the overall rate of infection in our community.

Steinway Grand Piano Campaign

Dear Patrons of Music at Southminster,
I am delighted to report that, thanks to a large donation that came in earlier
this week, the Steinway Fundraising Campaign is now nearly complete.
The current tally of contributions received by the
church totals just over $120,000, leaving us less
than $10,000 short of the total needed of $130,000!
Because we are so close, Southminster has agreed to proceed with the purchase
(the church will finance the balance while donations continue), and so I'm
simply over-the-moon to report that the piano will be
delivered to the church early next week, well in time for Charles Richard-Hamelin's first piano recital for donors, happening on Saturday October 3rd!
That said, if you haven't donated yet, please consider being among the folks
who will get us over the finish line; only 100
more donations of $100 will put the campaign to rest for good!
Secondly, I'm pleased to announce that the church's Wednesday
freewill-offering-funded noon-hour concert series - Doors Open for Music at
Southminster (DOMS) - will resume next Wednesday, September 30, with a
presentation by a local string quartet.
The new Steinway will feature prominently in the weeks to follow with concerts
involving a number of fine pianists from Ottawa and beyond performing concerts
of classical, chamber music, jazz and more. I will send full details of
the series out by this weekend.
One major unknown is whether we will open doors to live audiences (due
obviously to COVID19 restrictions) or live-stream only. Please stay tuned for
details as we are holding off this decision a few more days.

COBALT Prize

A collaboration between the Toronto Blues Society and Paul Reddick, the intention behind the COBALT Prize Contemporary Blues Composition Award is to promote blues music through exploration of its form. The Cobalt Prize Contemporary Blues Composition Award was created and originally funded by Toronto-based Reddick, whose goal was to change the way audiences perceive and appreciate blues music. The Cobalt Prize receives hundreds of submissions from artists coast-to-coast, proving that deviating from standard blues riffs and clichés is a welcomed addition to the growing Canadian blues music scene.
Open to Canadian artists, the winning composition is judged on its ability to creatively utilize blues traditions within the broad contemporary musical landscape. Particular attention is paid to aspects of instrumentation, melodic invention, song structure, lyrics, and production possibilities. The successful song refreshes and enriches blues as an art form. Priority is given to songs that have been crafted specifically for the Cobalt Prize, however previously released material may be submitted.
The submissions are now open with applications being accepted until Friday, October 30 by 6 pm Eastern. The intention behind the COBALT Prize is to promote blues music through exploration of its form. The winner will be announced during one of the upcoming Maple Blues Awards live stream sessions in the month of February and a cash prize of $500 will be awarded. Previous winners of the Cobalt Prize Contemporary Blues Composition Award are Digging Roots (2015), Conor Gains (2016), Ann Vriend (2017 & 2019), Joe Nolan (2018), and Bad Luck Woman & Her Misfortunes (2020).

“COVID FIGHTER” FALL 2020 SERIES
The Fall Series is a 3-Engagement – 2 Shows per Engagement – Series, running once a month in September, October & November. Depending on how these shows go we will consider continuing with a Winter (January, February, March) and Spring (April, May, June) Series. The Series will feature Duos & Trios playing great “sit-and-listen” Blues.
Full COVID safety protocol will be TOP PRIORITY at all times. 50-person capacity (half the normal) with 6’ distancing between tables, 12’ distancing between the artists and the nearest audience member. All staff will be wearing masks. Everyone entering The Cove will be required to wear masks and when circulating in the room (but they can be removed at the tables). Hand sanitizer will be everywhere, and all will be encouraged to use it regularly throughout the night, not just on entering and leaving the building. Use of bathrooms will be restricted to one person at a time.
Plated meals will be brought to the tables by Cove staff instead of a buffet. All surfaces will be sanitized regularly. We believe that if everyone follows these safety measures, we can all safely enjoy a night out of great LIVE music!
Of course, everything depends on the COVID-19 situation. If it worsens and indoor gatherings are banned again then the Series will be postponed. On the other hand, if things improve and full capacity gatherings with no social distancing required are allowed again, we may return to full band shows. However, given the current situation, we don’t see than happening anytime soon.
Performances
will include a delicious full course meal, the show and Door Prizes with
proceeds going to support different local charities – all for only $70 pp (plus
HST).
Note:
To date the BOTR @ The Cove Series has raised over $74K for local Westport
charities.

RESERVATIONS are required for all Shows and we encourage everyone to book ahead
to avoid disappointment – especially with the reduced seating capacity.

This isn’t a typical year and this isn’t a typical Festival of Small Halls. When the ‘Team Behind Bluesfest’ first launched the Ontario Festival of Small Halls, in August of 2014, they started with small steps – staging music events in historically important venues in a few small towns and villages near Ottawa, in Ontario, and featuring some notable Canadian talent. In recent years, the Festival of Small Halls has seen continued success and gained in popularity, due to the exceptional programming and boundless community enthusiasm that has become standard for the event.
