OTTAWA PUBLIC HEALTH
Highlights – September
22 Special Statement
****************************
The overall goals of our response to the pandemic are to prevent the level of COVID-19 transmission in Ottawa from disrupting society detrimentally and to prevent hospitalizations and deaths. This level of virus in our community is too high for these purposes. The people testing positive for COVID-19 linked to schools and long-term care homes is leading to disruption for families and workplaces and to deaths in at least one long-term care home at this point. We need to bend the curve down now.
Many of the people testing positive are in the 20 to 39 age group, and we are seeing more school-aged children test positive with their exposures in the community. Forty percent of people aged 20 to 39 who became ill in recent weeks acquired COVID-19 while in close contact with someone outside their household. Common examples including indoor social gatherings such as parties, gatherings at cottages and Airbnbs, and outdoor gatherings where people are close together.
In light of the increase in community transmission, and in light of recent situations with slow adherence to public health guidance, I am officially invoking a Class Section 22 Order under the Health Protection and Promotion Act that stipulates that any person that tests positive for COVID-19, has signs and symptoms of COVID-19, is a close contact of someone who has tested positive for COVID-19, has been tested for COVID-19 and awaiting a test result or otherwise has reasonable grounds to believe they have COVID-19 must self-isolate without delay. These individuals must remain in isolation for 14 days, unless COVID-19 is ruled out, and they must do everything they can to avoid exposing other people to COVID-19.
Failure to comply
with this Order could result in a fine of up to $5,000.00 for every day or part
of each day on which the offence occurs or continues. While we have issued
individual Section 22 orders previously to facilitate obtaining a list of
close contacts, we have not had to take anyone to court. When people
understand we have the authority to collect this information, we protect their
privacy when reaching out to contacts, and we are here to support them and
protect the community, we have received the information we need. Because the
numbers of people we are working with has increased so much, a class order
will support timely escalation when needed.
Details of this order can be found on our website.
I don’t take these
types of decisions lightly; however, I must do everything
possible to reduce the transmission that is currently occurring in
Ottawa. We must once again plank the curve through our actions and
this order is another intervention that targets the increasing non-adherence
with the basic prevention measures such as staying home when you have
symptoms. Self-isolation of ill people ensures
that the virus will not be passed on to others.
As of today, there have been 34 schools in Ottawa that have had an individual that tested positive for COVID-19 while they attended the schools setting. And we are reporting our second outbreak in a school.
Ottawa Public Health continues to work closely with the school principals and is reaching out to close contacts directly to provide direction on isolation and instruction on testing, including information on how and when to get tested for COVID-19. Only people contacted by OPH should seek testing.
Residents of Ottawa must continue to do their part to keep transmission in the community low to help stop COVID-19 from entering schools and long-term care homes in the first place. We have seen how one gathering can result in many individuals testing positive for COVID-19, and over 100 people needing to isolate and present for testing. Keep your close contacts to members of your household and essential supports, like grandparents or childcare providers or important friends or neighbours. Visiting with others must be with distance and masks when indoors or unable to distance.
We are in this together. Together we will make it through this time of stress and uncertainty with a focus on keeping each other as safe as possible.

So, we have reluctantly decided not to hold an autumn concert season. We sincerely hope to re-book some of the same fabulous artists as soon as possible in 2021.

Southminster United Church
Steinway Grand Piano Campaign
****************************
From Roland Graham, Musical Director, Southminster United Church:
Thanks to the generosity of many, I'm
pleased to share that the Steinway campaign has raised $80,000 to
date, or 60% of the total needed ($130,000) to purchase the piano.
We need 75% of the total for the piano by the end of September to
proceed, so we're nearly there! 75% of $130,000 is just a little under
$100,000, making the current shortfall around only $20,000.
So this is the home stretch: If you were waiting to see how things went before
getting involved, now's your opportunity to do so and make a difference; If you
offered a second donation should that be needed (a great many did),
we would be grateful if you did so now.
You can donate (or top up your donation) in the any of the following ways:
by Interac e-transfer to suc@rogers.com. Please
include your name, address, and email address so we can credit you for
your donation. This means of donation involves no cost or processing
fees and is also the fastest.
by cheque to Southminster United
Church at 15 Aylmer Ave, K1S 3X1. Please include your name
and email address along with a note stipulating what the donation is
for.
through Canadahelps.org (disregard the announced total raised
on the page; fees apply)
through Steinway's dedicated donation page. (fees apply)
Note: all donations are eligible for charitable tax receipts.
Thanks for your support and have a great day!

COBALT Prize
****************************
A collaboration between the Toronto Blues Society and Paul Reddick, the intention behind the COBALT Prize Contemporary Blues Composition Award is to promote blues music through exploration of its form. The Cobalt Prize Contemporary Blues Composition Award was created and originally funded by Toronto-based Reddick, whose goal was to change the way audiences perceive and appreciate blues music. The Cobalt Prize receives hundreds of submissions from artists coast-to-coast, proving that deviating from standard blues riffs and clichés is a welcomed addition to the growing Canadian blues music scene.
Open to Canadian artists, the winning composition is judged on its ability to creatively utilize blues traditions within the broad contemporary musical landscape. Particular attention is paid to aspects of instrumentation, melodic invention, song structure, lyrics, and production possibilities. The successful song refreshes and enriches blues as an art form. Priority is given to songs that have been crafted specifically for the Cobalt Prize, however previously released material may be submitted.
The submissions are now open with applications being accepted until Friday, October 30 by 6 pm Eastern. The intention behind the COBALT Prize is to promote blues music through exploration of its form. The winner will be announced during one of the upcoming Maple Blues Awards live stream sessions in the month of February and a cash prize of $500 will be awarded. Previous winners of the Cobalt Prize Contemporary Blues Composition Award are Digging Roots (2015), Conor Gains (2016), Ann Vriend (2017 & 2019), Joe Nolan (2018), and Bad Luck Woman & Her Misfortunes (2020).

This
will be quite a bit different than our shows in the past due to COVID restrictions,
which we fully support. Hopefully you can all keep an open mind and celebrate

You can't all come to us at the same time, so we are bringing the show to YOU. There will be FOUR separate performances across two nights with a strict capacity of 50 at each show. Fewer than 200 tickets will be sold in total.
We are working four times harder than normal, so we will be setting the ticket price a bit higher than pre-COVID times at $30. A portion of this will be going to the Rainbow to help keep the lights on at one of Ottawa's longest-lived live music venues.

THE RIDEAU
****************************
BLUES
ON THE RIDEAU
“COVID FIGHTER” FALL 2020 SERIES
The Fall Series is a 3-Engagement – 2 Shows per Engagement – Series, running once a month in September, October & November. Depending on how these shows go we will consider continuing with a Winter (January, February, March) and Spring (April, May, June) Series. The Series will feature Duos & Trios playing great “sit-and-listen” Blues.
Full COVID safety protocol will be TOP PRIORITY at all times. 50-person capacity (half the normal) with 6’ distancing between tables, 12’ distancing between the artists and the nearest audience member. All staff will be wearing masks. Everyone entering The Cove will be required to wear masks and when circulating in the room (but they can be removed at the tables). Hand sanitizer will be everywhere, and all will be encouraged to use it regularly throughout the night, not just on entering and leaving the building. Use of bathrooms will be restricted to one person at a time.
Plated meals will be brought to the tables by Cove staff instead of a buffet. All surfaces will be sanitized regularly. We believe that if everyone follows these safety measures, we can all safely enjoy a night out of great LIVE music!
Of
course, everything depends on the COVID-19 situation. If it worsens and indoor
gatherings are banned again then the Series will be postponed. On the other
hand, if things improve and full capacity gatherings with no social distancing
required are allowed again, we may return to full band shows. However, given
the current situation, we don’t see than happening anytime soon.
Performances will include a delicious full course meal, the show and Door Prizes with proceeds going to support different local charities – all for only $70 pp (plus HST).
Note:
To date the BOTR @ The Cove Series has raised over $74K for local Westport
charities.
ADVANCE
RESERVATIONS are required for all Shows and we encourage everyone to book ahead

BLUES FESTIVALS
– NEXT YEAR?
****************************
THE
18th ANNUAL BLUES FESTIVAL GUIDE MAGAZINE
https://bluesfestivalguide.com/emag/2020/
Blues
music is America’s original roots music. It is still being picked on the
front porches of tar-paper shacks, but just as frequently, it is fired up loud
and proud in front of a barroom (or festival) crowd.
Blues reflects hardship, trouble and strife, but also perseverance and strength
of character – to know the blues is to be in touch with your true spirit and
soul. The Blues Festival Guide is committed to the process of
presenting blues to a wider audience, and therefore offers a weekly, electronic
newsletter: Blues Festival
E-Guide (free subscription) and the popular annual
national print (and digital) magazine which comes out each spring.
“With so many festivals postponing or canceling, it was uncertain if we would publish
it this year, but the readers kept asking,” says publisher, Kaati Gaffney.
“We received countless personal calls and emails from advertisers and readers
alike and have been bombarded with magazine ad and subscription orders. It seems
the more we all sat at home during this pandemic, the more we thought about
music and its ability to generate well-being and connection. Even though
festival offerings are slimmer this year, there are still quite a few events planned
for the summer and fall.”
Blues legend Bobby Rush calls the magazine: The roadmap to
everything blues. Indeed, the articles offer something for everyone, all
blues related, of course. This year’s engaging editorial from aficionados in
the blues community includes articles from Grammy winner, Victor Wainwright,
Mitch Woods, Reverend Billy C. Wirtz and Roger Stolle among others.

The show features a heavy dose of electric blues
and rhythm and blues, with the occasional selection of sixties soul. The first
hour is dedicated to artist profiles and reviews of recordings on particular
labels. In the second hour there is a blues calendar, a rundown of events in
Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa, and interviews
with “new and reissued blues and rhythm and blues tracks on wax”, alternating with
“live blues and R&B for a Sunday night” in the last half hour of the show.

Songs rarely heard, from the very first recordings all the way to indie artists who consciously push the envelope to the next generation sounds of the genre; some older releases will be spun - just because the album in old, doesn't mean it's forgotten, thus the "On The Side" part of the show's title.
