Highlights – Special statement
–
****************************
Before I begin with the rest of my statement this morning, I would like to acknowledge the difficult and emotional day for many in our community with yesterday’s court decision in the death of Abdirahman Abdi. It is important for us to recognize the different experiences of members of our community, and that this can be a distressing time. We need to continue to support each other, listen and show compassion.
We encourage anyone who is feeling distressed to reach out and seek support; it’s OK to not be OK. There are a number of mental health resources available on our website where people can find help. Our community is suffering right now, and Ottawa Public Health will continue to work with you.
The message for the public today when it comes to reducing the harms from the COVID-19 pandemic is that we need to reduce risks in settings related to organized team sports. Ottawa Public Health (OPH) is investigating several situations where transmission of COVID-19 has occurred in relation to organized team sports. COVID-19 transmission is occurring in both adults and children’s leagues, and in a variety of sports.
OPH will be reporting on the number of outbreaks in sports and recreation settings on our daily COVID-19 dashboard. Individual teams and organizations will not be named in this report. Similar to some other settings, an outbreak in a sports league is defined as at least two players or coaches on the same team testing positive for COVID-19 with an epidemiological link.
Visit OttawaPublicHealth.ca for more Guidance for Return to Sport, Recreation and Fitness.
Thank you. Merci. Meegwetch.

COBALT Prize
****************************
A collaboration between the Toronto Blues Society and Paul Reddick, the intention behind the COBALT Prize Contemporary Blues Composition Award is to promote blues music through exploration of its form. The Cobalt Prize Contemporary Blues Composition Award was created and originally funded by Toronto-based Reddick, whose goal was to change the way audiences perceive and appreciate blues music. The Cobalt Prize receives hundreds of submissions from artists coast-to-coast, proving that deviating from standard blues riffs and clichés is a welcomed addition to the growing Canadian blues music scene.
Open to Canadian artists, the winning composition is judged on its ability to creatively utilize blues traditions within the broad contemporary musical landscape. Particular attention is paid to aspects of instrumentation, melodic invention, song structure, lyrics, and production possibilities. The successful song refreshes and enriches blues as an art form. Priority is given to songs that have been crafted specifically for the Cobalt Prize, however previously released material may be submitted.
The submissions are now open with applications being accepted until Friday, October 30 by 6 pm Eastern. The intention behind the COBALT Prize is to promote blues music through exploration of its form. The winner will be announced during one of the upcoming Maple Blues Awards live stream sessions in the month of February and a cash prize of $500 will be awarded. Previous winners of the Cobalt Prize Contemporary Blues Composition Award are Digging Roots (2015), Conor Gains (2016), Ann Vriend (2017 & 2019), Joe Nolan (2018), and Bad Luck Woman & Her Misfortunes (2020).

Southminster United Church
****************************
Dear Patrons of Music at Southminster,
While the fundraising effort for the Steinway is now officially closed,
donations have continued to come in (I processed two this morning), and
donations now total $129,500. I want to again repeat my sincere thanks to
everyone who contributed to the campaign over the past two months; what
has been accomplished is truly remarkable.
I repeat my promise to be in touch with all donors very shortly in follow-up if
I have not done so already. Several people have inquired about tax receipts
specifically; The church will issue these later this season, in time for filing
your 2020 tax returns. Stay tuned for more details in a personal email in the
next week or so.
A brief more personal update, I'm homeschooling my five-year-old son Phineas
this year, as we are one of many families who decided to minimize social
contact by keeping our kids out of the public school system. As a result, my
working hours have been halved, and this is one reason why productions are
unfolding at a slower rate this season at Southminster.
I am so grateful for the tremendous showing of support for my work through the
Steinway campaign and want to assure you that I have not lost motivation to
keep music alive at Southminster. COVID has complicated things in many other
obvious ways, including a late start to the DOMS season and now more recently,
our reverting to a streaming-only format. But, as the song goes, it will
survive.
Regarding a streaming-only format, I am aware of the inconsistent quality
of Southminster's live-streamed programming and want to assure everyone that we
are working on this. I understand the importance of delivering a level of
quality in keeping with the quality of our artists, and with the quality of
your listening experience in mind.
A new system will take time to be ready for full implementation as there are
several design and infrastructural pieces to put in place. Southminster is also
dealing with a major renovation project that will be starting later in 2020,
the demolition of its adjoining building and the retrofitting of its undercroft
into office and meeting space to accomodate current needs.
All this by way of saying, there is a lot going on, and it's all very exciting,
and all directly related to Southminster's commitment to maintaining a
high standard of concert productions during - and long after - the COVID
pandemic. I will endeavour to prodive meaningful updates as I am
able. In the meantime, thanks for your support and time, reading this message.
ENJOY LIVESTREAM PERFORMANCES: To enjoy DOMS

The Ottawa Mission Foundation’s
“Blue Door at your Door”
Saturday, November 7 at 8 pm.
A special one-hour show presented by Caivan Communities on CTV Ottawa and livestream on the website. Headlined by The Legendary Downchild Blues Band with special guest, Dan Aykroyd. The Blue Door at your Door program also includes performances by this stellar line-up: Colin James, Big Sugar, Matt Anderson, MonkeyJunk, and Dawn Tyler Watson.
A key feature of past Blue Door Gala events has always been meal preparation by graduates of the Food Service Training Program (FSTP) students, started over fifteen years ago by The Ottawa Mission’s Director of Food Services Chef Ric Allen-Watson. The FSTP provides applicants with the skills and confidence to work in the food industry and over 90% of graduates since 2004 have found jobs in this sector. Students pay no cost. This year, graduates will be creating a menu available for online purchase and delivery to your door.
During the program, we’ll share exciting news about the upcoming expansion of the FSTP. The former Rideau Bakery is the new location of the FSTP and has been donated to The Ottawa Mission for a 7-year period. To succeed, The Mission must raise significant funds to complete renovations at the Rideau Street location and launch an expanded food services job training program and social enterprise.
Viewers will also learn some of the many extraordinary stories about individuals who have rebuilt their lives through the support of programs at The Ottawa Mission and about how The Mission has adapted its services to keep guests and staff safe during the current pandemic while continuing to serve over 1400 meals every day, provide emergency shelter every night, and ensure that vulnerable people have access to vital healthcare services.
The
Ottawa Mission Foundation hopes you’ll circle your calendar for Saturday,
November 7, at 8 pm. to enjoy some fabulous music while supporting the
life-changing programs of The Ottawa Mission.

“COVID FIGHTER” FALL 2020 SERIES
The Fall Series is a 3-Engagement – 2 Shows per Engagement – Series, running once a month in September, October & November. Depending on how these shows go we will consider continuing with a Winter (January, February, March) and Spring (April, May, June) Series. The Series will feature Duos & Trios playing great “sit-and-listen” Blues.
Full COVID safety protocol will be TOP PRIORITY at all times. 50-person capacity (half the normal) with 6’ distancing between tables, 12’ distancing between the artists and the nearest audience member. All staff will be wearing masks. Everyone entering The Cove will be required to wear masks and when circulating in the room (but they can be removed at the tables). Hand sanitizer will be everywhere, and all will be encouraged to use it regularly throughout the night, not just on entering and leaving the building. Use of bathrooms will be restricted to one person at a time.
Plated meals will be brought to the tables by Cove staff instead of a buffet. All surfaces will be sanitized regularly. We believe that if everyone follows these safety measures, we can all safely enjoy a night out of great LIVE music!
Of course, everything depends on the COVID-19 situation. If it worsens and indoor gatherings are banned again then the Series will be postponed. On the other hand, if things improve and full capacity gatherings with no social distancing required are allowed again, we may return to full band shows. However, given the current situation, we don’t see than happening anytime soon.
Performances
will include a delicious full course meal, the show and Door Prizes with
proceeds going to support different local charities – all for only $70 pp (plus
HST).
Note:
To date the BOTR @ The Cove Series has raised over $74K for local Westport
charities.

to avoid disappointment – especially with the reduced seating capacity.

FESTIVAL OF SMALL HALLS
****************************
This isn’t a typical year and this isn’t a typical Festival of Small Halls. When the ‘Team Behind Bluesfest’ first launched the Ontario Festival of Small Halls, in August of 2014, they started with small steps – staging music events in historically important venues in a few small towns and villages near Ottawa, in Ontario, and featuring some notable Canadian talent. In recent years, the Festival of Small Halls has seen continued success and gained in popularity, due to the exceptional programming and boundless community enthusiasm that has become standard for the event.

BLUES FESTIVALS
– NEXT YEAR?
****************************
THE
18th ANNUAL BLUES FESTIVAL GUIDE MAGAZINE
https://bluesfestivalguide.com/emag/2020/
Blues
music is America’s original roots music. It is still being picked on the
front porches of tar-paper shacks, but just as frequently, it is fired up loud
and proud in front of a barroom (or festival) crowd.
Blues reflects hardship, trouble and strife, but also perseverance and strength
of character – to know the blues is to be in touch with your true spirit and
soul. The Blues Festival Guide is committed to the process of
presenting blues to a wider audience, and therefore offers a weekly, electronic
newsletter: Blues Festival
E-Guide (free subscription) and the popular annual
national print (and digital) magazine which comes out each spring.
“With so many festivals postponing or canceling, it was uncertain if we would publish
it this year, but the readers kept asking,” says publisher, Kaati Gaffney.
“We received countless personal calls and emails from advertisers and readers
alike and have been bombarded with magazine ad and subscription orders. It seems
the more we all sat at home during this pandemic, the more we thought about
music and its ability to generate well-being and connection. Even though
festival offerings are slimmer this year, there are still quite a few events planned
for the summer and fall.”
Blues legend Bobby Rush calls the magazine: The roadmap to
everything blues. Indeed, the articles offer something for everyone, all blues
related, of course. This year’s engaging editorial from aficionados in the
blues community includes articles from Grammy winner, Victor Wainwright,
Mitch Woods, Reverend Billy C. Wirtz and Roger Stolle among others.
