Blues On The Rideau presents
Bill
Durst
The
Cove Inn, Westport ON
Friday,
February 21, 7-11 pm; $70
(buffet dinner, dancing & door prizes
included)
Proceeds to Kick In
For Kids, Rideau District High School
If
you like your Blues hard & heavy in the style of ZZ Top, you don’t want to
miss this night! It’s Bill’s first visit to BOTR @ The Cove and I don’t know
why it’s taken this long for us to get him here. I’ve been a big fan of Bill’s
stuff for years. Growing up in Wingham, Ontario he was influenced by Motown,
R&B, Soul and the British Blues invasion artists – especially Jimi Hendrix.
He formed a classic Rock band called Thundermug in 1969 and they had a #1 radio
hit and went on to record 5 albums. He also spent some time in a ZZ Top Tribute
Band and you can certainly hear that influence in his music today. Bill put out
two solo albums in the mid ‘80 but it wasn’t until 2000 that his career really
took off. He created his power trio – a “fuzzy, psychedelic Blues band” as he
calls it – with Joe DeAngelis on bass (who also co-writes the songs with Bill)
and a drummer, and boy do they lay down a big sound for just 3 guys. They’ve
now done 5 albums together and have won or been nominated for a long list of
Blues and Blues Rock Awards since then. If you’re not familiar with Bill’s
music check out his website – and his extensive list of You Tubes and see for
yourself why you’ll want to be here for this show!

With Respect: A Tribute to Aretha Franklin
With Respect: A Tribute to Aretha Franklin
by
DeeDee Butters
Blacksheep
Inn, Wakefield QC
Friday,
February 21
Canadian
singer DeeDee Butters brings together the hottest soul talent from the National
Capital region to pay homage to the Queen of Soul at The BlackSheep Inn in
Wakefield.
Deeply influenced by Franklin’s style, DeeDee possesses a powerful and expressive 3-octave soprano voice that deftly recalls the agility and range of Aretha. Her interpretation of this legacy repertoire expresses the anthemic spirit of the original tunes as she charms the audience to share in the moment. DeeDee brings her improvisational ethos to the front line while the show cooks on high heat with gospel soul-sister backups, searing brass solos, tingling piano riffs, soaring guitar melodies, all set against a driving energetic backbone of drum and bass.
Andrew Burns – Bass
Nic Carey – Keys
Alex McFarlane – Drums
David Campell – Guitar
Iyono Ede – Backing vocals
Patrice Robinson - Backing vocals
Zeke Gross – Saxaphone
Kelly Craig – Trumpet

By The Bay Live presents
Bill
Durst
Avalon
Lounge Port Whitby Marina; 301 Watson Street West, Whitby ON
Saturday,
February 22 @ 8 pm; $45 advance + surcharge + HST
Always an audience favourite, Bill Durst is a
Canadian Blues-Rock-Roots guitarist, singer, songwriter and entertainer who has
written and recorded over 125 songs on 12 albums with 7 national radio chart
hits. Bill has toured across North America and in Europe and tours extensively
in Canada.
As a kid growing up in Wingham and then London,
Ontario, Bill was heavily influenced by Motown, R&B, Toronto Psychedelic
Soul music as well as the British Blues Invasion and Jimi Hendrix. Bill’s entrance on the national/international stage was with his
classic rock band Thundermug formed from London R&B groups in 1969. By the
summer of 1972 the band had a number one hit and a fan following in Eastern Canada.
The band went on to record a total of 5 albums, (3 albums in the early/mid 1970s
and two CDs in the mid-1990s) releasing records in the US and Europe.
Bill put out his first two solo releases in the
mid-1980s but it wasn’t until the early 2000s that Durst got some real career momentum.
In 2004 he proclaimed his intention to start up a “little, fuzzy, psychedelic
blues band” and since then Bill and his co-writer Joe DeAngelis have produced 5
CDs

Music
By The Bay Live presents
Matt
Weidinger - The Music of Van Morrison
St. Francis Centre, 78
Church Street South, Ajax ON
Saturday,
February 29 @ 8 pm; tickets $55 (+surcharge & HST)
Born
decades after Van Morrison was creating some of his most enduring music, singer
songwriter, Matt Weidinger, has a musical connection to the ’60s and ’70s,
what he calls the golden age of record-making.
Anyone
who’s seen him perform would agree with the “old soul” label, so it’s particularly
fitting that he’s taking on the songs of an old soul master with his latest
tribute to the music of Van Morrison. It’ll be something of a retrospective of
Van the Man’s extensive song catalogue, with a particular focus on the early
stuff that was Weidinger’s introduction to Morrison’s brand of Celtic soul.

Avalon Lounge, Port
Whitby Marina, Whitby ON
Saturday, April 18 @
8 pm; $45 advance + fees & HST
Steve Marriner, Chris Caddell & Jesse O'Brien
return to Music by the Bay Live for an unforgettable evening of blues. This
high-power trio will bring down the house on Saturday April 18 at Avalon Lounge
Port Whitby Marina. Be sure to bring your dancing shoes.
Steve Marriner is a dynamic and powerful performer.
His incorporation of various styles of blues, roots and soul come together to
form an original sound that is both deep and genuine. Steve has toured
internationally and performed at prestigious festivals, concert halls and music
clubs throughout Canada, The US, Europe and Australia and fronts the acclaimed
roots sensation MonkeyJunk.
Who would’ve thought that Belleville, Ontario could produce a musician with the southern vibe and bluesy reverence of a Stevie Ray Vaughan or Doyle Bramhall II? Chris Caddell’s raw soulful voice and emotive guitar skills were an instant hit when the then-teen made the big move to Toronto.
Jesse O’Brien played his first gig, with his father, at the age of 12. A few years later, he was playing piano for Ronnie Hawkins, and the teenager launched into an award-winning career as a keyboardist.

Rick Fines
Marble Arts Centre,
13 Bridgewater Road, Tweed ON
Saturday, May 9; doors
6:30 pm, show 7 pm – 9 pm; $20
Tickets available on Eventbrite
Steeped in roots
music, Rick Fines crafts a unique blend of warm-hearted blues, juke joint folk,
and dockside soul that both embraces and defies the genres that influence him.
As a veteran of the North American blues and folk circuits, he engages
audiences with captivating songs, diverse guitar styling and his signature
vocal growl. Rick’s storied career has seen him working in stellar
collaboration and as a successful solo act. First gaining attention as part of
the legendary Jackson Delta, he’s since released four solo albums, another with
his own Rick Fines trio, and a critically acclaimed disc with fellow
troubadour, Suzie Vinnick. Along the way he has racked up both awards and
accolades. His 15-year stint with Jackson Delta received both Juno and Handy
award nominations. His partnership with Suzie garnered a Maple Blues Songwriter
of the Year Award. On his own, he’s pulled in two more Maple Blues Awards (for
Solo Act of the Year), as well as an astonishing eight other nominations. While
his songwriting chops won him a 2003 International Songwriting Competition,
he’s equally proficient on guitar – having played for legendary blues piano
player Pinetop Perkins, songstress Colleen Peterson, folk icon Penny Lang, and
many others.
Equally at home alone at the microphone or leading a stage of fellow players, Rick has performed everywhere from the National Gallery and Governor General’s Garden Party to Montreal Jazz, Ottawa BluesFest, the Edmonton Folk Festival, and the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. International tour highlights include visits to France, Italy, Scotland, Newfoundland, BC’s Gulf Islands, and the Northern Arctic.
Rick believes in the transformative power of music. When not performing, he can be found teaching and sharing with students across Canada – including work with the Blues In The Schools programs in Tweed, Ottawa, Saskatoon, Toronto, and Yellowknife. He’s also participated in the Ontario Arts Council’s Artists in Education program.
His newest album, “Driving Home”, is his most eclectic and electric to date.
The Marble Arts Centre is an accessible, licenced venue with comfortable theatre seating that hosts many performances each year in an historic hall with wonderful acoustics.

Tuesdays,
7-9 pm
Re-broadcast Saturday 10 am – noon & Sunday
2-4 pm (all times EST)
It’s all about the Blues, Jazz and its derivatives
from around the globe and just around the corner. Songs rarely heard, from the very
first recordings all the way to indie artists who consciously push the envelope
to the next generation sounds of the genre; some older releases will be spun - just
because the album in old, doesn't mean it's forgotten, thus the "On The
Side" part of the show's title.
