LOCAL HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK
****************************
Friday, February 14; reserved seating $20, general admission $10

A frequent resident of Billboard’s Top 10 Blues charts and Canadian roots radio favourite, JW-Jones continues to accelerate his career momentum to new heights, whether it’s as a personally-requested sit-in with the likes of blues legend Buddy Guy, opening for blues rock icons Johnny Winter and George Thorogood or entertaining thrilled audiences in 23 countries and four continents. A show highlight is the JW-Jones showstopper – the 17-song medley that rifles through snippets of classic guitar riffs … finally captured on his latest recording, “JW-Jones Live”.

Joe McDonald Band
With Les Yeux Noirs & Jillian Kerr
Irene’s Pub, 885 Bank Street
Saturday, February 15 @ 8:30 pm

Jillian Kerr will be opening up with her amazing voice and songs. We have played a few gigs together now and she sang on my last album. Definitely not to be missed. Check her out at:
http://www.jilliankerr.ca/

The night will continue with Les Yeux Noirs. It is a Django Reinhardt tribute comprised of my guitar mentor, Paul Bourdeau and myself. The catalogue is deep and swinging. Perfect music for a romantic outing. It is Valentine’s Day weekend after all...

The Joe McDonald Band will get rolling after a short break and it is a lineup not to be missed. Mike Essoudry (drums) and Zach Ledgerwood (bass) will be driving the rhythm ship. Peter Gemmell (sax) and Wayne Dagenais (piano) will be tending the wings ever so eloquently. I’ll be smiling from the middle, happy as a cat in an afternoon nap. I’m gonna be trying out plenty of new material and we are gonna get some long jams going.

Let’s make this a big old party eh!?!
You are the ones that make a live show great!

MUSIC BY THE BAY LIVE
AJAX, UXBRIDGE, PORT PERRY
****************************
Music By The Bay Live presents
Bill Durst
Avalon Lounge Port Whitby Marina; 301 Watson Street West, Whitby ON
Saturday, February 22 @ 8 pm; $45 advance + surcharge + HST

Always an audience favourite, Bill Durst is a Canadian Blues-Rock-Roots guitarist, singer, songwriter and entertainer who has written and recorded over 125 songs on 12 albums with 7 national radio chart hits. Bill has toured across North America and in Europe and tours extensively in Canada.

As a kid growing up in Wingham and then London, Ontario, Bill was heavily influenced by Motown, R&B, Toronto Psychedelic Soul music as well as the British Blues Invasion and Jimi Hendrix. Bill’s entrance on the national/international stage was with his classic rock band Thundermug formed from London R&B groups in 1969. By the summer of 1972 the band had a number one hit and a fan following in Eastern Canada. The band went on to record a total of 5 albums, (3 albums in the early/mid 1970s and two CDs in the mid-1990s) releasing records in the US and Europe.

Bill put out his first two solo releases in the mid-1980s but it wasn’t until the early 2000s that Durst got some real career momentum. In 2004 he proclaimed his intention to start up a “little, fuzzy, psychedelic blues band” and since then Bill and his co-writer Joe DeAngelis have produced 5 CDs

Music By The Bay Live presents
Matt Weidinger - The Music of Van Morrison
St. Francis Centre, 78 Church Street South, Ajax ON
Saturday, February 29 @ 8 pm; tickets $55 (+surcharge & HST)

Born decades after Van Morrison was creating some of his most enduring music, singer songwriter, Matt Weidinger, has a musical connection to the ’60s and ’70s, what he calls the golden age of record-making.

Anyone who’s seen him perform would agree with the “old soul” label, so it’s particularly fitting that he’s taking on the songs of an old soul master with his latest tribute to the music of Van Morrison. It’ll be something of a retrospective of Van the Man’s extensive song catalogue, with a particular focus on the early stuff that was Weidinger’s introduction to Morrison’s brand of Celtic soul.
**********
Marriner Caddell & O’Brien
Avalon Lounge, Port Whitby Marina, Whitby ON
Saturday, April 18 @ 8 pm; $45 advance + fees & HST

Steve Marriner, Chris Caddell & Jesse O'Brien return to Music by the Bay Live for an unforgettable evening of blues. This high-power trio will bring down the house on Saturday April 18 at Avalon Lounge Port Whitby Marina. Be sure to bring your dancing shoes.

Steve Marriner is a dynamic and powerful performer. His incorporation of various styles of blues, roots and soul come together to form an original sound that is both deep and genuine. Steve has toured internationally and performed at prestigious festivals, concert halls and music clubs throughout Canada, The US, Europe and Australia and fronts the acclaimed roots sensation MonkeyJunk.

Who would’ve thought that Belleville, Ontario could produce a musician with the southern vibe and bluesy reverence of a Stevie Ray Vaughan or Doyle Bramhall II? Chris Caddell’s raw soulful voice and emotive guitar skills were an instant hit when the then-teen made the big move to Toronto.

Jesse O’Brien played his first gig, with his father, at the age of 12. A few years later, he was playing piano for Ronnie Hawkins, and the teenager launched into an award-winning career as a keyboardist.

by DeeDee Butters
Blacksheep Inn, Wakefield QC
Friday, February 21

Canadian singer DeeDee Butters brings together the hottest soul talent from the National Capital region to pay homage to the Queen of Soul at The BlackSheep Inn in Wakefield.

Her interpretation of this legacy repertoire expresses the anthemic spirit of the original tunes as she charms the audience to share in the moment. DeeDee brings her improvisational ethos to the front line while the show cooks on high heat with gospel soul-sister backups, searing brass solos, tingling piano riffs, soaring guitar melodies, all set against a driving energetic backbone of drum and bass.

Harpdog Brown has grown a reputation as a real-deal purveyor of classic electric blues. Think of the old Chess Records and Sun Records of the late ’40s and early ‘50s. These days he’s been touring more and more as Harpdog Brown & the Uptown Blues Band - a vintage New Orleans Blues sound that's piano driven and features incredible horn players. Still a vintage vibe, just a different vintage! This music will move you! They perform mostly originals yet they often include great songs of the masters from that era. Think Louis Jordan, Satchmo, Sonny Boy Williamson, Wynonie Harris, even Duke Ellington. Audiences are raving about this new show!

“For Love and Money” entered the Living Blues Radio Charts at #6 and #1 in Canada on the Roots Music Report and is still charting very well! You can pick up your copy on Deluxe CD or limited-edition Green Vinyl!
