24th
edition of Viree Blues Moosehead presents
Ria Reece
Le Petit Chicago, 50
promenade du Portage, Gatineau QC
Wednesday, March 29 @
8 pm; $20
(OBS members $15 with membership
card)
When the Viree Blues team featured her in 2012,
as their favourite and as a “to watch fast rising star” on the Blues scene, the
gang was so on target! Then the band was at its very start, almost unknown
to the public. They’ve since been nominated for two Lys Blues, have
performed at major festivals like the Quebec City Summer Festival, Tremblant
Blues and the Montreal International Jazz Festival. They made their way as
finalists to the “Toronto Blues Society’s Talent Search” and came out one of
four finalists selected by the “Montreal Blues Society” as top self-produced
album for the International Blues Challenge competition. Right now, they are
preparing their 3rd album. A dazzling ascension in only four
years for our guests: The Ria Reece Band.
The Ria Reece Band is considered by many as “Soul-Rock” strongly rooted in the Blues and classic R&B. Their musical influences: Blues and R&B legends such as Etta James, Koko Taylor and Marvin Gaye, as well as modern Blues-Rock bands such as Alabama Shakes and Vintage Trouble. This Montreal-based band offers breathtaking energy and passion every single time and throughout every performance. Powerful and entrancing, Ria’s voice is the magical component in the band featuring in this show the quintet of Andre Chevarie on guitar, Sylvain Lamothe on bass, Pascal Lepage on drums and JP Bouffard on B3 and Rhodes.

Lynne Hanson &
River City Junction
Black Sheep Inn,
Wakefield QC
Saturday, April 8 @
8:30 pm
We all carry a little bit of weight on our shoulders, but
being compelled toward songwriting is a welcome burden for Lynne Hanson. At
first listen, her warm, gritty, boot stompin’ music leads you through the
southern USA, though Hanson hails from Ottawa, Canada. Her sound is born
honestly through a lifetime of experience and influence, expressed through the
rock, blues and roots that bleeds from her very being.
In her latest “Uneven Ground” (April 2017), produced
by Winnipeg’s Scott Nolan, Hanson explores the realm of giving sound
advice through songwriting, and fighting back against the devil within us.
Permeating the recording is a restrained intensity, elevated with a
finger-picked beat, beautiful piano accompaniments, dobro and wind instruments.
The title track ‘Uneven Ground’ is a full-on blues assault, conjuring images a
glamorous chanteuse stretched out in front of a baby grand in a smoky
nightclub. All together, “Uneven Ground” is an authentic expression of Hanson’s
rustic style, brimming over with imagery and cleverly penned lyrics, and a
crystal-clear production. It steps proudly into the next generation of roots
and blues music, while still respecting traditions.
River City Junction is a Canadian Blues/Retro-Rock power
trio, long steeped in the traditions of Blues and Rock ‘n' Roll. A rich blend
of old school Chicago Blues, Motown, and Classic Rock, their music forms a very
potent sonic cocktail that is raw, organic and uplifting. Leaning heavily on
their roots, River City Junction's driving sound is deeply infused with
elements of yesteryear yet remains distinctively their own.

Not only has he shared the stage with the likes of B.B. King and Buddy Guy, he also founded the Music is the Medicine Foundation in 2010 a non-profit organization dedicated to changing the lives of others through the healing power of music. Through private donations and grants, the foundation has funded song writing scholarships, offered music education programs, and donated musical instruments to those in need. Without passion there is no music; Anthony Gomes gets it… on so many levels!
Gomes sings and plays with integrity and deeply felt emotion oblivious to fortune and fashion.
Gomes has been creating virtuosic, burning blues since his recorded debut in 1998 and is showing no signs of stopping by releasing his most successful album to date. Electric Field Holler, riff-laden and his most rock influenced album yet, has been nominated for Blues Album of the Year and already made several ‘Best Of’ Lists.
Anthony Gomes has headlined concerts in 17 countries and has had the honor of sharing the stage with B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Robert Plant, Joe Bonamassa, Heart, Alice Cooper, Jonny Lang and Kenny Wayne Shepherd.

With Carolyn Fe

Re-broadcast Saturday 10 am – noon & Sunday 2-4 pm

It’s all about the Blues, Jazz and its derivatives from
around the globe and just around the corner. Songs rarely heard, from the very
first recordings all the way to indie artists who consciously push the envelope
to the next generation sounds of the genre; some older releases will be spun -
just because the album in old, doesn't mean it's forgotten, thus the "On
The Side" part of the show's title.
