QC
Friday, March 24;

A rare opportunity to see Rockin’ Johnny Burgin is one of
the hardest-touring and well-recognized traditional Chicago blues guitarists
and singers today in an intimate house concert.
Since his start in the ‘90s on Chicago’s West Side with
blues singer Taildragger, he has become a leading blues attraction throughout
the United States and Europe. Rockin’ Johnny is a Delmark recording artist with
6 CDs to his credit, including the critically-acclaimed release, “Greetings
from Greaseland”, of which Chicago Blues Guide said, “plays out like a great
set of live blues, as authentic as it will ever get”. His latest – another Greaseland
recording – is hot off the press … “Neoprene Fedora”. He currently does 250
shows a year worldwide.
Over the years, Johnny has developed from a blues guitar-slinger
and local blues hero into a fully-fledged singer, harmonica player, a dynamic
and engaging bandleader, and a mature, seasoned guitarist. One look at Johnny’s
tour schedule confirms his status as an in-demand blues performer. Rockin’
Johnny also plays solo and duo shows, has a great West Coast Meets Chicago
package with rising harmonica star Aki Kumar, and does guitar and blues
workshops worldwide. He puts on the kind of satisfying and exciting show
that only years of touring can develop. Although he re-located to the West
Coast last year, he continues to tour across the US with occasional forays
north of the border.

of Llano, Texas. Danny IS the “Texassippi Soul Man” – a dash of Eddie Hinton,
Solomon Burke, Rev. James Cleveland and Howlin’ Wolf are all ingredients in his
soulful stew. He’s a multiple JUNO and Maple Blues Award nominee and sits in
the Blues Hall Of Fame in Clarksdale, Mississippi as an official Blues Ambassador
to Canada. His wife Debi provides backing vocals and The Memphis Brothers –
Bucky Berger on drums, Denis Pinhorn on bass and Papa John King on guitar – are
some of the best musicians on the Toronto scene today. It’s Danny’s 4th visit

A powerhouse performer, Matt Andersen’s “fingers sail over his acoustic guitar strings with the speed and grace of a hummingbird,” he has a giant yet soul-filled and passionate voice, and a commanding stage presence. In a word, Andersen is awesome! With over 10 million views on YouTube, independent album sales topping 30,000, a European Blues Award, Maple Blues Awards and Best Solo Performer at the Memphis Blues Challenge, Andersen’s worldwide fan base shows no signs of slowing down.
“The blues is a big part of what I do, and in my solo show some tunes are straight-up blues, for sure,” he says. “But I would never stand beside B.B. King and say, ‘I play blues, too.’ None of my albums are blues albums – I’ve won blues awards with them, but I wouldn’t say they’re blues albums.”

Lynne Hanson &
River City Junction
Black Sheep Inn,
Wakefield QC
Saturday, April 8 @
8:30 pm
We all carry a little bit of weight on our shoulders, but
being compelled toward songwriting is a welcome burden for Lynne Hanson. At
first listen, her warm, gritty, boot stompin’ music leads you through the
southern USA, though Hanson hails from Ottawa, Canada. Her sound is born
honestly through a lifetime of experience and influence, expressed through the
rock, blues and roots that bleeds from her very being.
In her latest “Uneven Ground” (April 2017), produced
by Winnipeg’s Scott Nolan, Hanson explores the realm of giving sound
advice through songwriting, and fighting back against the devil within us.
Permeating the recording is a restrained intensity, elevated with a
finger-picked beat, beautiful piano accompaniments, dobro and wind instruments.
The title track ‘Uneven Ground’ is a full-on blues assault, conjuring images a
glamorous chanteuse stretched out in front of a baby grand in a smoky
nightclub. All together, “Uneven Ground” is an authentic expression of Hanson’s
rustic style, brimming over with imagery and cleverly penned lyrics, and a
crystal-clear production. It steps proudly into the next generation of roots
and blues music, while still respecting traditions.
River City Junction is a Canadian Blues/Retro-Rock power
trio, long steeped in the traditions of Blues and Rock ‘n' Roll. A rich blend
of old school Chicago Blues, Motown, and Classic Rock, their music forms a very
potent sonic cocktail that is raw, organic and uplifting. Leaning heavily on
their roots, River City Junction's driving sound is deeply infused with
elements of yesteryear yet remains distinctively their own.

NPR from Canton NY
For those who live south of the city, OBS member Bob
Cavan notes that the National Public Radio (NPR) radio signal at 89.5 FM in
Canton NY comes in pretty strong in Manotick. Bob recommends two shows in
particular. Bob says “The Blue Note” Tuesdays 3 pm-5 pm, and “The Radio
Bob Show” Wednesdays 3 pm-5 pm are both excellent shows – blues, ‘50s
& ‘60s, rock & roll, R&B.

Unsung and On The
Side
With Carolyn Fe
Tuesdays, 7-9 pm
Re-broadcast Saturday 10 am – noon & Sunday 2-4 pm
(all times EST)
It’s all about the Blues, Jazz and its derivatives from
around the globe and just around the corner. Songs rarely heard, from the very
first recordings all the way to indie artists who consciously push the envelope
to the next generation sounds of the genre; some older releases will be spun -
just because the album in old, doesn't mean it's forgotten, thus the "On
The Side" part of the show's title.
