OTTAWA PUBLIC HEALTH

Highlights – Special Statement – November 24

****************************

… I want to say something about stigma. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a rise in stigma and prejudice against people who have tested positive for the virus. The pathways to infection are complex and have to do with contexts such as income, employment and housing status. OPH is seeking to foster a stigma-free environment where people are comfortable and supported to get a COVID-19 test and self-isolate as needed, and where people can easily access help if and when they need it. Everyone in Ottawa can contribute to building a culture of compassion and care.

Ottawa, we are all connected, and our collective individual actions matter. We continue to see COVID-19 transmission across the city in all neighbourhoods and in all age groups. We must all continue to make the right choices in our daily lives to keep COVID levels down.

Be kind, be safe and be well.

Sing with us from the comfort of your home. During this time when our choirs are unable to meet in person, virtual choir is an ideal way to come together, connect, and sing.

Shout Sister takes an unorthodox approach to choral singing. Please join us at anytime for a no obligation practice. We learn from recorded tracks so there is no reading music.

No auditions! Every singer is welcome. We sing fun, uplifting popular music.

Setup is easy and the program will work on most computers and devices. We have support to help you every step of the way.

If you are interested, please email members@shoutsisterchoir.ca

Despite 2020 being the year that really wasn’t, the Toronto Blues Society continues to support and promote Canadian Blues artists by announcing the nominees for the upcoming 24th annual Maple Blues Awards. The winners will be announced online from four cities over four nights – February 1, 8, 15, and 22.

Ottawa’s JW-Jones and his band(s) are nominated in five categories including Entertainer of the Year, Electric Act of the Year, New Artist of the Year (for Jones’ second project HOROJO Trio), Recording/Producer of the Year and Guitarist of the Year. Toronto Blues Society has been receiving valuable input from the members of the Canadian blues community regarding the Maple Blues Awards procedures and voting, and as such, have been developing new policies and protocol to ensure the Maple Blues Award system is responsive and evolving, thanks to the feedback gathered from across Canada.

While getting nominated for a Maple Blues Award is a wonderful achievement and excitement, not all of the nominees are regular users of social media or some may not have the budgets to execute a successful advertising campaign to solicit votes.  In the pursuit of fairness for all of the nominees and transparency, social media advertising by the MBA nominees will now be banned during the public voting period for the 24th annual Maple Blues Awards.

Southminster United Church

****************************

Dear Patrons of Music at Southminster,
I'm writing today with some
timely announcements about upcoming musical events at Southminster United Church, notably the DOMS Wednesday noon-hour series lineup for the month of December and the appointment of Southminster's new (musical) Artist in Residence.

But first, I want to share details of
Southminster's first ever virtual Christmas Bazaar, which is currently underway here. Continuing in a longstanding tradition, the church is offering an array of tasty home baked goods, preserves and frozen soups, as well as craftsChristmas itemsjewellerybooks and more. There is a silent auction as well, which includes among other treasures the chance to bid on original commissions by me, as well as by another member of Southminster's music staff, the inimitable folk singer/composer Chris White. Check it out here before it's all over!

I am thrilled to announce the appointment of Matthew Larkin as Southminster United Church's first ever Artist in Residence. An internationally respected organist, conductor, teacher and composer, Matthew brings several decades of serving the Canadian choral and liturgical music communities as the Music Director (and in several cases, founding director) of numerous distinguished Canadian musical institutions, to his new post.

December 2020
  Presented by
Southminster United Church

He's also an accomplished songwriter nd is the founder and Director of the famous Southside Shuffle Blues Festival in Port Credit, Ontario. Chuck has won 2 Juno Awards and 5 Maple Blues Awards with Downchild over his career and has been nominated 6X for the MBA for Best Male Vocalist - and won it 3X. He's up for another one this year. Joining Chuck for this performance is long time friend (and a former member of Downchild) Tyler Yarema on keyboards and Pat Carey on sax (another Downchild member) who has won the MBA for Horn Player of the Year an amazing 7X.
