Highlights – Special
Statement – November 17
****************************
Last week, updates were made to the provincial framework outlining new thresholds for adjusting and tightening public health measures across Ontario
Ottawa remains in the Orange-Restrict level, meaning we continue to implement some measures aimed at decreasing opportunities for COVID-19 transmission while keeping schools and businesses open.
When assessing the COVID-19 virus levels and risk of transmission in Ottawa, I consider multiple factors. I examine the daily number of individuals who test positive, testing rates, the percent of people having a COVID-19 test who test positive, the number of outbreaks, hospital capacity, case and contact management capacity, and qualitative information gained from public health responses.
Overall, many indicators point to a slow decline in transmission of COVID-19 in Ottawa. This is directly thanks to the residents of Ottawa. It’s clear we know what we need to do to slow the spread of COVID-19 in the community. Forging on with the protective behaviours we are using can keep decreasing the level of the virus and will help us avoid hospitalizations and deaths and closures of businesses with the negative consequences that can bring.
I know it’s hard to hear the same guidance over and over. But starting to turn the curve again should give us all something to hold on to; it’s evidence that your actions over the last few weeks have had a direct impact on the COVID situation in Ottawa.
We’re one million people, and we’re all connected.
When we go about our daily activities, ongoing thoughtfulness makes activities safer. Whether you’re visiting a restaurant, attending hockey practice, going to a large store or a place of worship: always assess your risks and keep your guard up. Go back to the basics: keep two metres apart from others, wear a mask (choose three layers for masks you purchase into the future), stay home when you’re sick (except for getting a quick COVID-19 test) and wash your hands. And as much as possible, limit your close contacts to those in your household.
If we do these simple things, and we continue to grow supports for people who have less choice to work in higher risk settings or to isolate from ill family members, we can keep COVID-19 levels low in the community over the winter months.

The winners will be announced online from four cities over four nights – February 1, 8, 15, and 22.

Ottawa’s JW-Jones and his band(s) are nominated in five categories including Entertainer of the Year, Electric Act of the Year, New Artist of the Year (for Jones’ second project HOROJO Trio), Recording/Producer of the Year and Guitarist of the Year. Toronto Blues Society has been receiving valuable input from the members of the Canadian blues community regarding the Maple Blues Awards procedures and voting, and as such, have been developing new policies and protocol to ensure the Maple Blues Award system is responsive and evolving, thanks to the feedback gathered from across Canada.
While getting nominated for a Maple Blues Award is a wonderful achievement and excitement, not all of the nominees are regular users of social media or some may not have the budgets to execute a successful advertising campaign to solicit votes. In the pursuit of fairness for all of the nominees and transparency, social media advertising by the MBA nominees will now be banned during the public voting period for the 24th annual Maple Blues Awards.

BLUES FESTIVALS
– NEXT YEAR?
****************************
THE
18th ANNUAL BLUES FESTIVAL GUIDE MAGAZINE
https://bluesfestivalguide.com/emag/2020/
Blues
music is America’s original roots music. It is still being picked on the
front porches of tar-paper shacks, but just as frequently, it is fired up loud
and proud in front of a barroom (or festival) crowd.
Blues reflects hardship, trouble and strife, but also perseverance and strength
of character – to know the blues is to be in touch with your true spirit and
soul. The Blues Festival Guide is committed to the process of
presenting blues to a wider audience, and therefore offers a weekly, electronic
newsletter: Blues Festival
E-Guide (free subscription) and the popular annual
national print (and digital) magazine which comes out each spring.
“With so many festivals postponing or canceling, it was uncertain if we would publish
it this year, but the readers kept asking,” says publisher, Kaati Gaffney.
“We received countless personal calls and emails from advertisers and readers
alike and have been bombarded with magazine ad and subscription orders. It seems
the more we all sat at home during this pandemic, the more we thought about
music and its ability to generate well-being and connection. Even though
festival offerings are slimmer this year, there are still quite a few events planned
for the summer and fall.”
Blues legend Bobby Rush calls the magazine: The roadmap to
everything blues. Indeed, the articles offer something for everyone, all blues
related, of course. This year’s engaging editorial from aficionados in the
blues community includes articles from Grammy winner, Victor Wainwright,
Mitch Woods, Reverend Billy C. Wirtz and Roger Stolle among others.
