The Hellraisers
Fatboys Southern Smokehouse, 34 Murray Street
Saturday, June 29 @ 9 pm; $5

Outlaw Devilish Blues - The Hellraisers duo transports us into their acoustic blues universe. They invite us to a journey through the years, by taking the great successes of the best blues musicians of all time, from Robert Johnson to Stevie Ray Vaughan, from Howlin' Wolf to the Allman Brothers. They also cover, in their own way, rock bands such as AC / DC and the Rolling Stones, in addition to composing original songs.
With arrangements that are stripped down but effective, The Hellraisers style beautifully combines the harmonica and the delta blues acoustic guitar, the Dobro guitar with a bottleneck slide, the mandolin and percussion, to offer an energetic and varied show. It's 100% 'live' act, with 2 musicians on stage that often give the impression of being a full band. A musical experience not to be missed with one of the most original and promising bands on the blues scene.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ch1ikPlKMv8
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-6g0sX-xlk

Since the release of his first album “Gravity” in 2000, Rob Lutes has steadily built a collection of exquisite songs that inhabit the intersection of blues, folk, Americana, and the contemporary singer-songwriter genre. As skilled delivering a Piedmont blues classic as he is performing his own acclaimed original songs, Lutes' masterful finger style guitar work and soulful voice bring an unmistakable intensity to his live performances.

A double Maple Blues Award nominee as Acoustic Act and Songwriter of the Year in 2017, on his 7th album, “Walk in the Dark”, he does what he has done for years: kicks up a little dust, wades into some deep waters and tackles the realities of the world with depth, humour and a unique musical style.

Recorded mainly over three days in late January in a small studio in Montreal's Notre Dame de Grace borough, the recording captures the essence of Lutes' soulful voice and rhythmic guitar style, enveloped by a group of players who are no stranger to his groove. Featuring 12 new originals, including two co-writes with award-winning Americana songwriter Dale Boyle, and the forgotten John Prine gem /Rocky Mountain Time/, the album digs deep into the roots of Canadian and American music and delivers another strong statement. "This album, of all of them, was a journey into the unknown, which is why I like the title so much," Lutes says. "With a great co-producer, and a group of phenomenal players and friends, I went into the studio to find these songs. And I really feel like we did that."

Well-priced accommodation available at The Cove, nearby B&Bs and motel
Westport is a beautiful historic town on the Rideau Waterway - a 90-minute drive from Ottawa, 45 minutes from Kingston.

This year we celebrate our 15th Anniversary season - making BOTR one of the longest running and best Blues Series in the country. We've put together another fabulous Line-Up of some of Canada's best Blues artists - nominees and winners of Juno Awards, Maple Blues Awards, American Blues Music Award, Western Canadian Music Award and more - bringing back some of the all time favourites who have played the Series over the years plus a few great new ones.

Visit www.BluesOnTheRideau.ca for more more details including artists' Bios, LINKS to their websites and You Tubes.

Then check your calendars, make your choices and RESERVE NOW to be sure you don't miss out on the shows. This is particularly true if you want to STAY OVERNIGHT. All the rooms at The Cove; nearby B&Bs and the Westport Station Motel usually sell out in advance on BOTR nights.

The 2019/20 Season kicks off September 13
with the incredibly talented
HARRISON KENNEDY -
Juno Award and Maple Blues Award winner and American Blues Music Award nominee - coming with  his red hot band from the Hammer!

You will note that there has been a
SMALL INCREASE in the ticket price this year - from $65 pp to $70 pp (plus HST). This is the first price increase in 5 years and is necessary to cover the increased costs of just about everything - food, drink, staff, band and Sound Engineer fees, advertising, printing costs and more.

However, when you consider the quality of the meal, the venue, the ambiance and the incredible LIVE music on these nights and compare it to just about anything else this is still one of - if not THE - best entertainment value in eastern Ontario - make that the country!

Also note that there are
3 TWO NIGHT STAND shows this season - October, November and January - giving those who have difficulty in making the Friday night shows more chances to come out on Saturday nights!

And we've
added a show in DECEMBER this year - December 13 with multiple Juno Award winners MONKEYJUNK. If you want a great place to have your Christmas Party next season this would be it! Book early!

See you next season. Have a great summer everybody!

SINGER SONGWRITER CAMP
****************************
Ottawa Singer Songwriter Camp
Alcorn Music Studios, 953 Gladstone Avenue
July 15-26; For teens and adults age 15-115

Directed by Elise Letourneau and Megan Jerome.
With guest instructors Lynn Miles, Shelley Posen, Al Tambay, and Ian Tamblyn at Alcorn Music Studios and GigSpace.

Give voice to the songs that are already inside of you, in a positive environment, with like-minded creative spirits. Revel in the luxury of a quiet songwriting space, just for you and your ideas. Enjoy daily opportunities to perform and receive valuable feedback on your singing and playing, lyric and music writing, and stage presence.

Your songwriting sherpas will guide you through the landscape that all performer-songwriters need to navigate, including finding your muse, pulling a song together, and performing it effectively. Through hands-on creative activity and lively brainstorming sessions, you’ll gain useful insights into establishing and sustaining your songwriting routine.

In CREATE (with Megan, Elise, Lynn, and Ian), you will befriend your artistic self and learn to nurture your inspiration’s wellspring. You’ll finish the week with at least one brand new song, and the chance to perform it after plenty of coaching and encouragement from seasoned performer-songwriters, who will help you identify and draw upon your strengths. Whether you are working on your first song or you are a pre-professional singer-songwriter, your creative spark will ignite in this supportive environment.

In COLLABORATE (with Elise, Megan, Al, and Shelley), working in duos with another participant (or sign up with a friend!) you’ll perform a 3-song showcase set. Throughout the week you’ll rehearse together on an original song you each bring to share, and you’ll write a new song together as a songwriting team. You’ll learn more about chords, song forms and arranging, and accompanying yourself on your instrument and joining in with others. And you’ll get lots of immediate feedback and tips from our instructors to guide you forward in your songwriting practice.

Enrollment is limited to 10 participants for CREATE, and 14 participants for COLLABORATE.
Sign up for one week, or both!

LIVE on Elgin, 220 Elgin Street
Sunday, August 25; doors 6:30 pm, show 7:30 pm;
Tickets - advance $20, at the door $25

Australian/Irish Duo Hat Fitz & Cara will be in Ottawa for 1 night only celebrating their latest album "Hand It Over".

Hat Fitz is a “veteran” wild man of the blues scene in Australia. He has a record 18 straight appearances at Byron’s East Coast Blues and Roots Festival, a record that is not likely to ever be broken, and one which bears testimony to his amazing live performances and popularity with festival goers. Cara draws on her soul background (she’s toured Europe and the United States with singers such as Jamiroquai and the hugely popular Corinne Bailey-Rae), and although blessed with a sensational voice she was not content to be labelled as ‘just a singer’. She has taken to drumming duties as well as washboards, flute and tin whistle, sometimes all at once.

They have been festival favourites at Ottawa Bluesfest, CityFolk and Ontario Festival of Small Halls. Join them on August 25th, 2019 as the pair take you on a musical journey with ample, boisterous highs, and longing, bluesy lows. From the Australian outback to the Canadian shield, Hat Fitz & Cara put on a show that is guaranteed to energize and invigorate.

Black and Blues
with John Tackaberry
The show features a heavy dose of electric blues and rhythm and blues, with the occasional selection of sixties soul. The first hour is dedicated to artist profiles and reviews of recordings on particular labels. In the second hour there is a blues calendar, a rundown of events in Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa, and interviews with “new and reissued blues and rhythm and blues tracks on wax”, alternating with “live blues and R&B for a Sunday night” in the last half hour of the show.

NPR from Canton NY
For those who live south of the city, OBS member Bob Cavan notes that the National Public Radio (NPR) radio signal at 89.5 FM in Canton NY comes in pretty strong in Manotick. Bob recommends two shows in particular. Bob says “The Blue Note” Tuesdays 3 pm-5 pm, and “The Radio Bob Show” Wednesdays 3 pm-5 pm are both excellent shows – blues, ‘50s & ‘60s, rock & roll, R&B.

Unsung and On The Side
With Carolyn Fe
Tuesdays, 7-9 pm
Re-broadcast Saturday 10 am – noon & Sunday 2-4 pm (all times EST)
It’s all about the Blues, Jazz and its derivatives from around the globe and just around the corner. Songs rarely heard, from the very first recordings all the way to indie artists who consciously push the envelope to the next generation sounds of the genre; some older releases will be spun - just because the album in old, doesn't mean it's forgotten, thus the "On The Side" part of the show's title.
