SPECIAL EVENTS THIS WEEK
****************************
NAC Presents
Morgan Davis
National Arts Centre 4th Stage, 1 Elgin Street
Saturday, June 8 @ 8:30 pm; $25

For 45 years, Morgan Davis has been on the road travelling across Canada, the United States and Europe. His performances draw from a rich tradition of country blues, as well as his own contemporary songs infused with wit and a large dose of humour.

Over the years he has had the privilege of opening for Willie Dixon, John Lee Hooker, Albert King, John Hammond, Albert Collins, and Eric Bibb. A highlight of his career was backing the phenomenal Dr. John. Morgan has also shared the stage with Colin Linden, who also produced his second album.

His multi-award-winning release "Painkiller" won an impressive four awards at the 2004 Maple Blues Awards and not long after took home Canada's top music prize, the Juno for Blues Album of the Year.

Steve Hill
Rainbow Bistro, 76 Murray Street
Saturday, June 8 @ 9 pm; $20

When it comes to one-man bands, guitarist and singer extraordinaire Steve Hill has no limits. The truest definition of a one-man band, Hill performs standing up while singing and playing guitar, his feet playing bass drum, snare drum, hi-hats and with a drum stick fused to the head of his trusty guitar, any other percussion within reach. An overnight sensation 20 years in the making, Steve Hill is an ambitious and raucous force to be reckoned with on the Canadian and international blues-rock scene. The one-man band style has made him the top star in the Canadian blues scene right now. (Bob Mersereau, CBC) Steve Hill is clearly in his element as a solo artist and one-man band, inviting listeners into a world of musical madness in the form of blues and rock ‘n’ roll.

“It’s A Date Night”
Garrett Mason with special guest poet J.G. Lutes
Irene’s Pub, 885 Bank Street
Sunday, June 9 @ 3 pm; $10

One of Canada’s finest players, Garrett Mason was raised in Truro, Nova Scotia by his mother Pam, and father, veteran Canadian bluesman Dutch Mason. Dutch stopped playing
guitar before Garrett was born. Although he was not able to teach his son to play, he certainly taught Garrett the structure of the blues and influenced Garrett’s resulting sound. Surrounded by his father’s peers, Garrett had the benefit of hearing and learning from a wide variety of musical talent.

Joining Garrett is poet friend J.G. Lutes, making each night of the tour a time for both music and ideas. The tour was born from a chance invite Lutes accepted to read poems at a music festival last fall where J.G. was recorded reading his original work. “I shared a video with Garrett of me reading poems at the North Along The Shore Festival, in Avondale, NS. He liked it and said I should open for him. I suggested we do a tour together.” The result is fourteen dates throughout Eastern Canada.

“We’re both from small towns in Nova Scotia and I think that makes for a rural honesty in our work,” Lutes says. “I’m so proud to share a little bit of the stage with Garrett because he’s really an unbelievable musical force. If you haven’t seen him perform, and if you are intrigued by spoken word, then come out and hear a special collaboration.”

Garrett Mason and J.G. Lutes find purpose in creating art. They’re taking it on the road to share with part of the country. Come hear ideas; some new, some old.

DIFD is a youth-driven program focused on raising awareness and inspiring conversations around youth mental health. Created by friends and family of Daron Richardson who lost her life at the young age of 14.
DIFD is inspired by hope for a future where young people will reach out for help without fear or shame. DIFD supports programs and initiatives aimed at transforming youth mental health.

HoRoJo in Concert
Manotick United Church, 5567 Manotick Main Street, Manotick ON
Saturday, June 8; doors @ 7 pm, show 8–10:30 pm

It's going to be a great night out in the national capital area's premiere small hall.

HOROJO Trio is a soul rockin’ rhythm & blues act that features drummer Jamie Holmes, singer/keyboardist Jeff Rogers, and guitarist/singer JW-Jones. Jeff is known as one of the hardest working artists in the nation’s capital clocking over 250 shows per year. The Ottawa Citizen says “his voice practically bowls you over with intensity, as sweet, rich and gooey as molasses in a heatwave”, while Nick Krewen (Globe & Mail, Grammy.com, Billboard) calls JUNO nominee JW-Jones “a frequent resident of Billboard’s Top 10 Blues charts and roots radio favourite”. Jamie is one of the most versatile drummers in the country and has toured throughout North America and Europe and recorded in Nashville with Grammy winning producer Tom Hambridge. The trio came together organically from a chance jam session after a corporate event that was so inspired that it left the audience and the musicians wanting more. Even before their first gig, they had already been called an Ottawa “super group”, and while they admit the band name (derived from the first two letters of each of the members’ last names) is unusual, the future certainly looks bright for the exceptional HOROJO Trio.

10th Anniversary Dustbowlapalooza

Irene’s Pub, 885 Bank Street
Saturday, June 8 @ 8 pm
Suggested cover: $5 for students/underemployed; $10 for the happily employed; $15 gets you entrance plus a pre-release copy of our new EP.

Who can believe its been 10 years since the Dustbowl Daddies first strummed some tunes together? So come on out on June 8 to kick off the summer in musical style and marvel at the fact that we've managed to keep our mercurial egos in check long enough to outlast The Police and the Clash 😊 Plus we're thrilled to be sharing the stage with Wychwood - a great alt-country bluegrass duo - who will change up the pace a bit in between our first and second sets!! Think you'll love them - and we're definitely looking forward to being able to enjoy a little music as audience members ourselves this time!

Bonus factors:
- As always, portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Ottawa Rape Crisis Centre (with the remainder helping fund the cost of recording our new soon-to-be-released album).
- We'll also have copies of our two new singles to share ... as well as sneak-preview, only-for-friends-family-and-fans copies of our upcoming EP (“More Hurricane than Rainbow”)!
- It's a heck of a lot cheaper than watching Avengers in Cineplex's VIP seats!

Hope to see you Saturday June 8! And thanks, as always, for your support :)

Music by the Bay Live presents
Rory Block
St. Francis Centre, 78 Church Street South, Ajax
Saturday, June 8 @ 8 pm; $61.02 (HST included)

Heralded as a living landmark (Berkeley Express), a national treasure (Guitar Extra), and one of the greatest living acoustic blues artists (Blues Revue), Rory Block has committed her life and her career to preserving the Delta blues tradition and bringing it to life for 21st century audiences around the world.

A traditionalist and an innovator at the same time, she wields a fiery and haunting guitar and vocal style that redefines the boundaries of acoustic blues and folk. The New York Times declared, “Her playing is perfect, her singing otherworldly as she wrestles with ghosts, shadows and legends.”

Rory has so much passion, soul, and depth, and she connects to an audience like only a handful of performers. Besides being an amazing country blues and slide guitarist, singer, and songwriter, Rory is also one of the most qualified interpreters of classic blues. There are few players with a biography as rich as Rory’s, who started her career at 14, playing and hanging around with legends such as Mississippi Fred McDowell and Son House. Her latest album is “A Woman’s Soul: A Tribute to Bessie Smith”.

Tri-Continental
Black Sheep Inn, Wakefield QC
Thursday, June 20 @ 8 pm; $25

Tri-Continental is a collaborative evolution that blends the talents of three accomplished guitar players, singers and songwriters. There are no musical boundaries present in this one-of-a-kind blues / folk / world music mélange.

Formed in 1999, Tri-Continental builds on artistic respect and a deep passion for and knowledge of the blues. Bill Bourne, Lester Quitzau and Madagascar Slim present a truly unique and critically acclaimed sound that is soulful and present, intense and atmospheric. Well-recognized and respected artists with successful solo careers, they are indeed major players in the Canadian roots, folk and blues music scene.

Individually and collectively Tri-Continental has received 4 Juno awards and 10 nominations, 2018 Album of the Year nomination for “Dust Dance” at the International Folk Music Awards and 2019 Western Canadian Music Awards nomination for Roots Group / Duo of the Year.
Together as Tri-Continental, something very special and magical happens with Bourne - the grand improvisor, Quitzau - kidnapper of the blues taking it to new dimensions, and Madagascar Slim - a fascination with tradition and evolution found him on the leading edge as promoter of a new sound - the Malagasy blues.

This is clearly evident in the music they create, where sharing and curiosity leads them on fascinating musical explorations resulting in their infectious sound where world, Celtic, Latin, folk, flamenco, blues and African rhythms fuse into one.

David Gogo
Neat Coffee Shop, Burnstown ON
Friday, June 21 @ 8 pm; $35

With the release of his 15th album “17 Vultures”, bluesman David Gogo continues his blues rock crusade by pushing himself forward, yet again. Not that looking back on his career is a bad thing. He has performed on stage with the likes of BB King, Johnny Winter, Albert Collins, Bo Diddley, and Otis Rush. He has been chosen to open shows for ZZ Top, George Thorogood, The Tragically Hip, Little Feat, Jimmie Vaughan, Robert Cray, Robin Trower and Wishbone Ash. His songs are featured in films and television and have been covered by a variety of artists, most notably Buddy Guy.

Never one to be pigeonholed into a strict blues category, this may be his most diverse release to date. Although initially known for his ability to rip it up on lead guitar with his electric performances, Gogo has also built up a solid reputation over the last decade as an acoustic performer with his solo shows that feature his vintage National steel guitar chops, as well as his entertaining stories from the road. Usually he keeps these two sides of his abilities separate, but he features both on the new album … [but] the collection of songs ranges from traditional blues to very heavy contemporary influences. Along with five new original songs by Gogo, the choice of cover songs are an interesting variety with cuts by The Beatles, Barbecue Bob, Doug And The Slugs, and Bob Dylan! Overall the album is an entertaining and diverse listen and gives Gogo another strong batch of material to add to his many live performances!

In 1972, the great Aretha Franklin was dominating the R&B charts. She recorded a live gospel album in two shows in an L.A. church, and it was filmed by Sydney Pollack. The album went on to become her biggest-selling record ever, and a classic of gospel music, but the movie languished. There were technical issues, then legal ones.

Now, the film has been completed and released, and to see Aretha sing, with some sort of divine presence backing her up, is an experience not to be missed. No talking heads, no expert interviews, no backstage drama: just Aretha and friends, singing their way into your soul.

Rob Lutes

Saturday, June 29; $25

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ch1ikPlKMv8
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-6g0sX-xlk

Since the release of his first album “Gravity” in 2000, Rob Lutes has steadily built a collection of exquisite songs that inhabit the intersection of blues, folk, Americana, and the contemporary singer-songwriter genre. As skilled delivering a Piedmont blues classic as he is performing his own acclaimed original songs, Lutes' masterful finger style guitar work and soulful voice bring an unmistakable intensity to his live performances.

A double Maple Blues Award nominee as Acoustic Act and Songwriter of the Year in 2017, on his 7th album, “Walk in the Dark”, he does what he has done for years: kicks up a little dust, wades into some deep waters and tackles the realities of the world with depth, humour and a unique musical style.

Recorded mainly over three days in late January in a small studio in Montreal's Notre Dame de Grace borough, the recording captures the essence of Lutes' soulful voice and rhythmic guitar style, enveloped by a group of players who are no stranger to his groove. Featuring 12 new originals, including two co-writes with award-winning Americana songwriter Dale Boyle, and the forgotten John Prine gem /Rocky Mountain Time/, the album digs deep into the roots of Canadian and American music and delivers another strong statement. "This album, of all of them, was a journey into the unknown, which is why I like the title so much," Lutes says. "With a great co-producer, and a group of phenomenal players and friends, I went in to the studio to find these songs. And I really feel like we did that."

HOROJO

Friday June 14 @ 9 pm; $20
Purchase by Calling: RCHA Club 613-542-8152 (after 3PM) or drop by the club. Or reserve by email – bruce@kingstonbluessociety.ca

On June 14th (10 days away and tickets are selling quickly) we have JW Jones and his new band HOROJO Trio, a rockin’ rhythm & blues act that features drummer Jamie Holmes, singer/keyboardist Jeff Rogers, and guitarist/singer JW-Jones. (JW still has his other band plus he has started a new big band … not sure when the guy sleeps).

Jeff Rogers is known as one of the hardest working artists in the country clocking over 250 shows per year. The Ottawa Citizen says “his voice practically bowls you over with intensity, as sweet, rich and gooey as molasses in a heatwave”. His keyboard skills are second to none.

JW Jones is Juno-nominated, IBC Winner and Maple Blues Winner. JW has played many times with Buddy Guy; he has also played with Canned Heat, Hubert Sumlin, Kim Wilson of The Fabulous Thunderbirds, George Thorogood and Colin Linden.

Jamie Holmes is one of the most versatile drummers in the country and has toured throughout North America and Europe and recorded in Nashville with Grammy-winning producer Tom Hambridge.

For those who live south of the city, OBS member Bob Cavan notes that the National Public Radio (NPR) radio signal at 89.5 FM in Canton NY comes in pretty strong in Manotick. Bob recommends two shows in particular. Bob says “The Blue Note” Tuesdays 3 pm-5 pm, and “The Radio Bob Show” Wednesdays 3 pm-5 pm are both excellent shows – blues, ‘50s & ‘60s, rock & roll, R&B.

Re-broadcast Saturday 10 am – noon & Sunday 2-4 pm (all times EST)
It’s all about the Blues, Jazz and its derivatives from around the globe and just around the corner. Songs rarely heard, from the very first recordings all the way to indie artists who consciously push the envelope to the next generation sounds of the genre; some older releases will be spun - just because the album in old, doesn't mean it's forgotten, thus the "On The Side" part of the show's title.
