OTTAWA PUBLIC HEALTH

Highlights – Special statement – September 28

****************************

Be COVIDWise to keep our schools and businesses open

Lastly, we continue to see a rising number of individuals testing positive and outbreaks in school settings are following. We are also seeing more exposures to COVID-19 in some businesses. No one wants to close schools and no one wants to see businesses close – to do so would have a detrimental impact on our community both economically and otherwise.

At the end of the day, it’s simple: we must continue to be COVIDWise to keep COVID-19 out of schools and businesses.

I know people miss their friends and loved ones. I know you want to see each other, and everyone has been working hard at coming up with new, safer ways to be social.

I’m asking everyone to keep doing the right thing. If we continue to work hard now, we have a better chance at seeing the benefits of our efforts sooner.

No action is too small. Every protective measure we can take matters to reduce the overall rate of infection in our community.

Southminster United Church

Steinway Grand Piano Campaign

****************************

Dear Patrons of Music at Southminster,

I am delighted to report that, thanks to a large donation that came in earlier this week, the Steinway Fundraising Campaign is now nearly complete.

The current
tally of contributions received by the church totals just over $120,000, leaving us less than $10,000 short of the total needed of $130,000!

Because we are so close, Southminster has agreed to proceed with the purchase (the church will finance the balance while donations continue), and so I'm simply
over-the-moon to report that the piano will be delivered to the church early next week, well in time for Charles Richard-Hamelin's first piano recital for donors, happening on Saturday October 3rd!

That said, if you haven't donated yet, please consider being among the folks who will get us over the finish line; only
100 more donations of $100 will put the campaign to rest for good!

Secondly, I'm pleased to announce that the church's Wednesday freewill-offering-funded noon-hour concert series - Doors Open for Music at Southminster (DOMS) - will resume next Wednesday, September 30, with a presentation by a local string quartet.

The new Steinway will feature prominently in the weeks to follow with concerts involving a number of fine pianists from Ottawa and beyond performing concerts of classical, chamber music, jazz and more. I will send full details of the series out by this weekend.

One major unknown is whether we will open doors to live audiences (due obviously to COVID19 restrictions) or live-stream only. Please stay tuned for details as we are holding off this decision a few more days.

That's it for now, thanks for reading, and thanks for all your support making my Steinway dream a reality.

Roland Graham, Musical Director, Southminster United Church

COBALT Prize

****************************

A collaboration between the Toronto Blues Society and Paul Reddick, the intention behind the COBALT Prize Contemporary Blues Composition Award is to promote blues music through exploration of its form. The Cobalt Prize Contemporary Blues Composition Award was created and originally funded by Toronto-based Reddick, whose goal was to change the way audiences perceive and appreciate blues music. The Cobalt Prize receives hundreds of submissions from artists coast-to-coast, proving that deviating from standard blues riffs and clichés is a welcomed addition to the growing Canadian blues music scene.

Open to Canadian artists, the winning composition is judged on its ability to creatively utilize blues traditions within the broad contemporary musical landscape. Particular attention is paid to aspects of instrumentation, melodic invention, song structure, lyrics, and production possibilities. The successful song refreshes and enriches blues as an art form. Priority is given to songs that have been crafted specifically for the Cobalt Prize, however previously released material may be submitted.

The submissions are now open with applications being accepted until Friday, October 30 by 6 pm Eastern. The intention behind the COBALT Prize is to promote blues music through exploration of its form. The winner will be announced during one of the upcoming Maple Blues Awards live stream sessions in the month of February and a cash prize of $500 will be awarded. Previous winners of the Cobalt Prize Contemporary Blues Composition Award are Digging Roots (2015), Conor Gains (2016), Ann Vriend (2017 & 2019), Joe Nolan (2018), and Bad Luck Woman & Her Misfortunes (2020).

SUBMISSIONS

All submissions must include:

-      One (1) attached MP3 file of the track to be considered (NOTE: Only one track per composer will be considered)

-      Track information (including track title, lyrics sheet, and composers’ name)

-      Contact information (including first and last name, e-mail address, current city and province of residence)

-      A $10 admin fee payable via PayPal (link will be provided after submission)

Please send your complete application to cobaltprize@gmail.com for consideration by Friday, October 30 at 6pm EST.

BLUES ON THE RIDEAU

****************************

BLUES ON THE RIDEAU

“COVID FIGHTER” FALL 2020 SERIES

The Fall Series is a 3-Engagement – 2 Shows per Engagement – Series, running once a month in September, October & November. Depending on how these shows go we will consider continuing with a Winter (January, February, March) and Spring (April, May, June) Series. The Series will feature Duos & Trios playing great “sit-and-listen” Blues.

Full COVID safety protocol will be TOP PRIORITY at all times. 50-person capacity (half the normal) with 6’ distancing between tables, 12’ distancing between the artists and the nearest audience member. All staff will be wearing masks. Everyone entering The Cove will be required to wear masks and when circulating in the room (but they can be removed at the tables). Hand sanitizer will be everywhere, and all will be encouraged to use it regularly throughout the night, not just on entering and leaving the building. Use of bathrooms will be restricted to one person at a time.

Plated meals will be brought to the tables by Cove staff instead of a buffet. All surfaces will be sanitized regularly. We believe that if everyone follows these safety measures, we can all safely enjoy a night out of great LIVE music!

Of course, everything depends on the COVID-19 situation. If it worsens and indoor gatherings are banned again then the Series will be postponed. On the other hand, if things improve and full capacity gatherings with no social distancing required are allowed again, we may return to full band shows. However, given the current situation, we don’t see than happening anytime soon.

Performances will include a delicious full course meal, the show and Door Prizes with proceeds going to support different local charities – all for only $70 pp (plus HST).

Note: To date the BOTR @ The Cove Series has raised over $74K for local Westport charities.

ADVANCE RESERVATIONS are required for all Shows and we encourage everyone to book ahead to avoid disappointment – especially with the reduced seating capacity.

CALL THE COVE at 613-273-3636

Well-priced accommodation is available at The Cove and nearby B&Bs for those who want to stay overnight.

ADDED BONUS!

For all those who would love to attend but can’t, the shows will be broadcast LIVE on the

BOTR YouTube CHANNEL

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCwljdQBzal87XBJLg9sW-CQ with high quality HD video and Sound Board audio. Broadcasts will be 90 minutes in length from 8 pm to 9:30 pm ET for the evening shows (2 pm to 3:30 pm for Rick & Suzie’s September 18 Matinee).

DONATIONS (call it a Virtual Cover Charge) for these Shows will be GRATEFULLY APPRECIATED and split evenly between the artists, The Cove and Choose The Blues Productions. We encourage you to visit the channel and SUBSCRIBE in advance for quick access.

ONTARIO FESTIVAL OF SMALL HALLS

****************************

This isn’t a typical year and this isn’t a typical Festival of Small Halls. When the ‘Team Behind Bluesfest’ first launched the Ontario Festival of Small Halls, in August of 2014, they started with small steps – staging music events in historically important venues in a few small towns and villages near Ottawa, in Ontario, and featuring some notable Canadian talent. In recent years, the Festival of Small Halls has seen continued success and gained in popularity, due to the exceptional programming and boundless community enthusiasm that has become standard for the event.

For 2020, despite the pandemic, the Festival of Small Halls organizers are determined to maintain their track record for excellence with a stellar lineup of live acts that will wow audiences in four Ontario communities. And, although health guidelines will restrict those audiences to a maximum of fifty people, music lovers who are fortunate enough to attend will witness memorable performances by some of the best talent Canada has to offer.

Since we re-opened, we've been telling customers that they must wear a non-medical mask inside the cinema, except when safely seated, watching the movie. We were given that advice by a staffer at a City Councillor's office, purportedly relayed from Ottawa Public Health. We have been informed that, well, we had been misinformed. The correct policy is that masks should be worn at all times in the cinema, except while eating or drinking.

BLUES FESTIVALS – NEXT YEAR?

****************************

THE 18th ANNUAL BLUES FESTIVAL GUIDE MAGAZINE

https://bluesfestivalguide.com/emag/2020/

Blues music is America’s original roots music. It is still being picked on the front porches of tar-paper shacks, but just as frequently, it is fired up loud and proud in front of a barroom (or festival) crowd.

Blues reflects hardship, trouble and strife, but also perseverance and strength of character – to know the blues is to be in touch with your true spirit and soul. The Blues Festival Guide is committed to the process of presenting blues to a wider audience, and therefore offers a weekly, electronic newsletter: Blues Festival E-Guide (free subscription) and the popular annual national print (and digital) magazine which comes out each spring.

“With so many festivals postponing or canceling, it was uncertain if we would publish it this year, but the readers kept asking,” says publisher, Kaati Gaffney. “We received countless personal calls and emails from advertisers and readers alike and have been bombarded with magazine ad and subscription orders. It seems the more we all sat at home during this pandemic, the more we thought about music and its ability to generate well-being and connection. Even though festival offerings are slimmer this year, there are still quite a few events planned for the summer and fall.”

Blues legend Bobby Rush calls the magazine: The roadmap to everything blues. Indeed, the articles offer something for everyone, all blues related, of course. This year’s engaging editorial from aficionados in the blues community includes articles from Grammy winner, Victor Wainwright, Mitch Woods, Reverend Billy C. Wirtz and Roger Stolle among others.

It’s all about the Blues, Jazz and its derivatives from around the globe and just around the corner. Songs rarely heard, from the very first recordings all the way to indie artists who consciously push the envelope to the next generation sounds of the genre; some older releases will be spun - just because the album in old, doesn't mean it's forgotten, thus the "On The Side" part of the show's title.

Carolyn wrapped up Unsung and On The Side after 200 shows. OTTAWA PUBLIC HEALTH

Highlights – September 22 Special Statement

****************************

Today, we are reporting that 93 individuals have tested positive for COVID-19, the highest number in a single day since April.

The overall goals of our response to the pandemic are to prevent the level of COVID-19 transmission in Ottawa from disrupting society detrimentally and to prevent hospitalizations and deaths. This level of virus in our community is too high for these purposes. The people testing positive for COVID-19 linked to schools and long-term care homes is leading to disruption for families and workplaces and to deaths in at least one long-term care home at this point. We need to bend the curve down now.

Many of the people testing positive are in the 20 to 39 age group, and we are seeing more school-aged children test positive with their exposures in the community. Forty percent of people aged 20 to 39 who became ill in recent weeks acquired COVID-19 while in close contact with someone outside their household. Common examples including indoor social gatherings such as parties, gatherings at cottages and Airbnbs, and outdoor gatherings where people are close together.

In light of the increase in community transmission, and in light of recent situations with slow adherence to public health guidance, I am officially invoking a Class Section 22 Order under the Health Protection and Promotion Act that stipulates that any person that tests positive for COVID-19, has signs and symptoms of COVID-19, is a close contact of someone who has tested positive for COVID-19, has been tested for COVID-19 and awaiting a test result or otherwise has reasonable grounds to believe they have COVID-19 must self-isolate without delay. These individuals must remain in isolation for 14 days, unless COVID-19 is ruled out, and they must do everything they can to avoid exposing other people to COVID-19.

Failure to comply with this Order could result in a fine of up to $5,000.00 for every day or part of each day on which the offence occurs or continues. While we have issued individual Section 22 orders previously to facilitate obtaining a list of close contacts, we have not had to take anyone to court.  When people understand we have the authority to collect this information, we protect their privacy when reaching out to contacts, and we are here to support them and protect the community, we have received the information we need. Because the numbers of people we are working with has increased so much, a class order will support timely escalation when needed.

Details of this order can be found on our website

I don’t take these types of decisions lightly; however, I must do everything possible to reduce the transmission that is currently occurring in Ottawa. We must once again plank the curve through our actions and this order is another intervention that targets the increasing non-adherence with the basic prevention measures such as staying home when you have symptoms. Self-isolation of ill people ensures that the virus will not be passed on to others.

As of today, there have been 34 schools in Ottawa that have had an individual that tested positive for COVID-19 while they attended the schools setting. And we are reporting our second outbreak in a school.

Ottawa Public Health continues to work closely with the school principals and is reaching out to close contacts directly to provide direction on isolation and instruction on testing, including information on how and when to get tested for COVID-19. Only people contacted by OPH should seek testing.

Residents of Ottawa must continue to do their part to keep transmission in the community low to help stop COVID-19 from entering schools and long-term care homes in the first place. We have seen how one gathering can result in many individuals testing positive for COVID-19, and over 100 people needing to isolate and present for testing. Keep your close contacts to members of your household and essential supports, like grandparents or childcare providers or important friends or neighbours. Visiting with others must be with distance and masks when indoors or unable to distance.

We are in this together. Together we will make it through this time of stress and uncertainty with a focus on keeping each other as safe as possible.

Southminster United Church

Steinway Grand Piano Campaign

****************************

From Roland Graham, Musical Director, Southminster United Church:

Thanks to the generosity of many, I'm pleased to share that the Steinway campaign has raised $80,000 to date, or 60% of the total needed ($130,000) to purchase the piano.

We need 75% of the total for the piano by the end of September to proceed, so we're nearly there! 75% of $130,000 is just a little under $100,000, making the current shortfall around only $20,000.

So this is the home stretch: If you were waiting to see how things went before getting involved, now's your opportunity to do so and make a difference; If you offered a second donation should that be needed (a great many did), we would be grateful if you did so now.

You can donate (or top up your donation) in the any of the following ways:

by Interac e-transfer to suc@rogers.com. Please include your name, address, and email address so we can credit you for your donation. This means of donation involves no cost or processing fees and is also the fastest.

by cheque to Southminster United Church at 15 Aylmer Ave, K1S 3X1. Please include your name and email address along with a note stipulating what the donation is for.

through Canadahelps.org (disregard the announced total raised on the page; fees apply)

through Steinway's dedicated donation page. (fees apply)

Note: all donations are eligible for charitable tax receipts.

Thanks for your support and have a great day!

The Hornettes’ 10th Birthday Party

The Rainbow Bistro, 76 Murray Street

Friday & Saturday, September 25-26

shows at 7:30 pm & 10:30 pm; tickets $30

This will be quite a bit different than our shows in the past due to COVID restrictions, which we fully support. Hopefully you can all keep an open mind and celebrate with us safely!

You can't all come to us at the same time, so we are bringing the show to YOU. There will be FOUR separate performances across two nights with a strict capacity of 50 at each show. Fewer than 200 tickets will be sold in total.

We are working four times harder than normal, so we will be setting the ticket price a bit higher than pre-COVID times at $30. A portion of this will be going to the Rainbow to help keep the lights on at one of Ottawa's longest-lived live music venues.

To reserve a spot, please send an e-transfer to rainbowbluesottawa@gmail.com and include the following info:
- "HBD Hornettes!"
- Date & time of show you'd like to attend
- Number of people in your party (tables of up to 8 are available)
- Your contact phone number

Thanks to all of you for the love and support over the years. We know this is a weird time, but we hope you'll come party with us.
