OTTAWA PUBLIC HEALTH
Highlights
from August 28 Special Statement
****************************
Temporary
Mask By-law
On Wednesday this week, Ottawa City Council voted to extend the temporary mask by-law until October 31. The by-law was also amended to include mandatory masks in additional enclosed spaces, such as taxis and rideshares, the common areas and shared services of condos, apartment and multi-residential buildings, and the option of establishing mandatory mask zones in crowded outdoor areas where physical distancing is difficult.
Wearing masks correctly helps control the spread of COVID-19 in our community and is associated with less deaths. Since the original decision to implement the temporary by-law on July 15, most residents of Ottawa have embraced masking practices, and understand it is one of the tools we have to minimize COVID-19 transmission. These latest amendments were in response to public input about gaps in protection in our community, and will help limit the spread of the virus as children and youth go back to school, and businesses continue to reopen. It is incredibly important to keep COVID-19 transmission as low as possible in our community, to minimize the risk of it being introduced in schools and long-term care homes.
Masks should be well fitted, comfortable, washed regularly, and properly put on, taken off and stored.
Masks should also be used in addition to other protective measures, such as physical distancing, hand washing, not touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands, and staying home if you are sick. Be sure to visit OPH’s FAQs and guidance about masks on our website.
Please remember that not everyone is able to wear a mask. We must continue to be kind to each other as we navigate these difficult times.
The majority of new people diagnosed with
COVID-19 are from close contacts and household transmission
The
data tells us we are not seeing COVID-19 transmission where people are wearing
masks – that is excellent news! To date, there have been no known outbreaks
directly linked to bars, restaurants, gym facilities or other business
establishments where people gather and where masks are currently mandated under
the Temporary Mandatory Mask By-law.
Where we are seeing COVID-19 transmission is mostly linked to close contacts. It includes settings such as your home, visiting loved ones or friends, where familiarity and comfort make it easier to let your guard down. Remember that anyone can be infected with COVID-19 and they may not know that they are transmitting the virus – even your family and friends.

Southminster United Church
Steinway Grand Piano Campaign
****************************
From Roland Graham, Musical Director, Southminster United Church:
I'm
excited to announce that the campaign to raise money for Southminster's
new Steinway Model D grand piano (read up on that here if
not in the loop) has passed a notable milestone!
Having raised just over $35,000 between donations made
through Canadahelps.org and
those mailed in by cheque, we have just over half the amount needed for
Southminster to secure the purchase and take possession of the
piano!!
If
you haven't donated because you were waiting to see how things pan out, wait no
further! So far only 250 people of our list of 3000 supporters have
donated. That's over a quarter of the target achieved by fewer than
10% of our numbers! I find that extremely encouraging!
Visit Canadahelps.org to
donate instantly online, or mail a cheque made out to Southminster United
Church at 15 Aylmer Ave, K1S 3X1. All donations will be charitably
receipted in time for your 2020 tax returns.
Please send any questions about the
campaign to SouthminsterSteinway2020@gmail.com.
Thank you for your time. Stay tuned for more news!

Born in Canada and raised in Michigan, Terry first got introduced to the Blues
in small Detroit clubs watching legends like John Lee Hooker, Buddy Guy, Muddy
Waters and Howlin’ Wolf. He was the first trumpet player in an orchestra at the
time. He immediately self-taught himself the guitar and was good enough at a
young age that the Wolf asked him to join his band!
He moved to Ottawa in the late ’60s and helped introduce the Blues to that
city. He also discovered Reggae at the same time and began fusing the two into
a unique sound which he maintains to this day. In the early ’70s he formed one
of Ottawa’s most popular bands of that era - Heaven’s Radio.
In the ’80s Terry & his wife Kathy started spending their winters in
Jamaica - and still do to this day - where he is in large demand as a
multi-genre performer. For 6 months of the year you can find him and his band
playing at some of the coolest venues on the island. Terry loves to collaborate
with musicians of all different styles and genres bringing them together into a
distinctive blend with an almost hypnotic groove.
He is joined for this gig by his old friend Peter Measroch (originally from
South Africa, now living in Montreal) on keyboards & tabla and Salah Adem
(originally from Eritrea now living in Ottawa) on African percussion. Terry on
vocals, guitar and harmonica. Come and listen to what Blues/Reggae/African
fusion sounds like!

September
11-12 – Duelling Pianos (Dave
Kalil, Tyler Kealey, Todd Huckabone)
Dave
Kalil, Tyler Kealey and Todd Huckabone are a staple of the music scene in
Ottawa. Known as the Duelling Pianos, their musical ability and interactive
personalities have captivated audiences since they formed the group in 2002.
With both Dave and Tyler at the keyboards, they are held together by Todd on guitar
to form a solid show of endless classic hits spanning several decades of music.
Playing a blend of requests from the audience, their blistering guitar and
piano solos, three-part harmonies, and random comedic impromptu moments
have won over the crowds they perform for time after time.
September
18-19 – Rebecca Noelle
Blessed
with a searing three octave range, Rebecca has been featured on CBC's The
Vinyl Cafe, BBC Radio in the U.K., Sirius Radio in America, and Radio Bremen in
Germany.
Although Rebecca has had the privilege to try her hand at just about every
musical style she's wanted to over the years, it’s her natural affinity for
jazz that sets this stunning singer apart. With a velvety voice that is simply
unforgettable, Rebecca expresses a candid honesty both lyrically and musically
that nurtures the connection between audience and artist.
September
– 26-27 – HOROJO Trio
HOROJO
Trio is a soul rockin’ rhythm & blues act that features drummer Jamie
Holmes, singer/keyboardist Jeff Rogers, and guitarist/singer JW-Jones, who
was named the year's Best Guitarist at the IBC.
Jeff is known as one of the hardest working artists in the nation’s capital
clocking over 250 shows per year. The Ottawa Citizen says “his voice
practically bowls you over with intensity, as sweet, rich and gooey as molasses
in a heatwave”, while Nick Krewen (Globe & Mail, Billboard) calls JUNO
nominee JW-Jones “a frequent resident of Billboard’s Top 10 Blues
charts and roots radio favourite”. Jamie is one of the most versatile drummers
in the country and has toured throughout North America and Europe and
recorded in Nashville with Grammy-winning producer Tom Hambridge.

shows at 7:30 pm & 10:30 pm; tickets $30
This
will be quite a bit different than our shows in the past due to COVID restrictions,
which we fully support. Hopefully you can all keep an open mind and celebrate

You can't all come to us at the same time, so we are bringing the show to YOU. There will be FOUR separate performances across two nights with a strict capacity of 50 at each show. Fewer than 200 tickets will be sold in total.
We are working four times harder than normal, so we will be setting the ticket price a bit higher than pre-COVID times at $30. A portion of this will be going to the Rainbow to help keep the lights on at one of Ottawa's longest-lived live music venues.
To
reserve a spot, please send an e-transfer to rainbowbluesottawa@gmail.com and include

BLUES ON
THE RIDEAU
****************************
BLUES
ON THE RIDEAU
“COVID FIGHTER” FALL 2020 SERIES
The Fall Series is a 3-Engagement – 2 Shows per Engagement – Series, running once a month in September, October & November. Depending on how these shows go we will consider continuing with a Winter (January, February, March) and Spring (April, May, June) Series. The Series will feature Duos & Trios playing great “sit-and-listen” Blues.
Full COVID safety protocol will be TOP PRIORITY at all times. 50-person capacity (half the normal) with 6’ distancing between tables, 12’ distancing between the artists and the nearest audience member. All staff will be wearing masks. Everyone entering The Cove will be required to wear masks and when circulating in the room (but they can be removed at the tables). Hand sanitizer will be everywhere, and all will be encouraged to use it regularly throughout the night, not just on entering and leaving the building. Use of bathrooms will be restricted to one person at a time.
Plated meals will be brought to the tables by Cove staff instead of a buffet. All surfaces will be sanitized regularly. We believe that if everyone follows these safety measures, we can all safely enjoy a night out of great LIVE music!
Of course, everything depends on the COVID-19 situation. If it worsens and indoor gatherings are banned again then the Series will be postponed. On the other hand, if things improve and full capacity gatherings with no social distancing required are allowed again, we may return to full band shows. However, given the current situation, we don’t see than happening anytime soon.
Performances
will include a delicious full course meal, the show and Door Prizes with
proceeds going to support different local charities – all for only $70 pp (plus
HST).
Note:
To date the BOTR @ The Cove Series has raised over $74K for local Westport
charities.
ADVANCE
RESERVATIONS are required for all Shows and we encourage everyone to book ahead
to avoid disappointment – especially with the reduced seating capacity.
CALL
THE COVE at 613-273-3636
Well-priced accommodation is available at The Cove and nearby B&Bs for those who want to stay overnight.
ADDED
BONUS!

BLUES FESTIVALS
– NEXT YEAR?
****************************
THE
18th ANNUAL BLUES FESTIVAL GUIDE MAGAZINE
https://bluesfestivalguide.com/emag/2020/
Blues
music is America’s original roots music. It is still being picked on the
front porches of tar-paper shacks, but just as frequently, it is fired up loud
and proud in front of a barroom (or festival) crowd.
Blues reflects hardship, trouble and strife, but also perseverance and strength
of character – to know the blues is to be in touch with your true spirit and
soul. The Blues Festival Guide is committed to the process of
presenting blues to a wider audience, and therefore offers a weekly, electronic
newsletter: Blues Festival
E-Guide (free subscription) and the popular annual
national print (and digital) magazine which comes out each spring.
“With so many festivals postponing or canceling, it was uncertain if we would
publish it this year, but the readers kept asking,” says publisher, Kaati
Gaffney. “We received countless personal calls and emails from advertisers and
readers alike and have been bombarded with magazine ad and subscription orders.
It seems the more we all sat at home during this pandemic, the more we thought
about music and its ability to generate well-being and connection. Even though
festival offerings are slimmer this year, there are still quite a few events planned
for the summer and fall.”
Blues legend Bobby Rush calls the magazine: The roadmap to
everything blues. Indeed, the articles offer something for everyone, all
blues related, of course. This year’s engaging editorial from aficionados in
the blues community includes articles from Grammy winner, Victor
Wainwright, Mitch Woods, Reverend Billy C. Wirtz and Roger Stolle among
others.
