SPECIAL EVENTS THIS WEEK

With Respect – A Tribute to Aretha Franklin
by DeeDee Butters
LIVE on Elgin, 220 Elgin Street
Thursday, May 23; 8-11 pm; $17 advance, $20 at the door

Canadian singer DeeDee Butters brings together the hottest soul talent from the National Capital region to pay homage to the Queen of Soul.

Deeply influenced by Franklin’s style, DeeDee possesses a powerful and expressive 3-octave soprano voice that deftly recalls the agility and range of Aretha. Her interpretation of this legacy repertoire expresses the anthemic spirit of the original tunes as she charms the audience to share in the moment. DeeDee brings her improvisational ethos to the frontline while the show cooks on high heat with gospel soul-sister backups, searing brass solos, tingling piano riffs, soaring guitar melodies, all set against a driving energetic backbone of drum and bass.

Arranged and directed by bassist and composer Andrew Burns and pianist Nic Carey, the show features Aretha’s greatest hits played by Ottawa’s best talent:
Andrew Burns – Bass
Nic Carey – Keys
Alex McFarlane – Drums
David Campell – Guitar
Iyono Ede – Backing vocals
Zeke Gross – Saxaphone
Kelly Craig - Trumpet

DeeDee’s remarkable voice has been played on CBC Radio in Canada and around the world (WA12 UK, LRD Radio France, Big Indie Giant South Africa). A founding member of The PepTides, DeeDee can also be found playing with Canadian Southern Rock outfit The Cooper Brothers, Amanda Rheaume, Rebecca Noelle, Destiny Funk Band, and many others.

Jim Dan Dee, Marc Bourgon & Cee Lawrence
Café Dekuf, 221 Rideau Street
Thursday, May 23, 8 pm – midnight

Since birth, Jim has been a performer and a night owl; the perfect storm for the creation of a full-time musician. As a child his parents had to put up with his crooning deep into the wee hours of the night, something they could only occasionally tolerate. As he grew in both talent and size, the support of his family and friends towards his artistic endeavours increased and he is now a confident and talented full-size performer. Jim is on a mission to bring great songs to the people, because they deserve it. His influences are blues, modern and psychedelic rock, with decades of original songwriting to back it up. In his solo performances Jim plays a rhythmic combination of guitar, harmonica and foot percussion that fills up a room and has people singing along and drinking in the sounds. Full-band electric or Solo acoustic, the Jim Dan Dee show is an experience that leaves the audience feeling richer for having had it.

Marc Bourgon is the singer of Ottawa rock stalwarts Iconoclast and Dead Air Republic. After a disastrous cheese grating accident on tour in Brockville, Marc was banned from playing guitar in public by authorities. However, after years of intense therapy and probation he secretly began to book acoustic solo shows, eager to dazzle the audience with his mastery of the D-chord. Expect to hear all the Iconoclast and DAR hits, peppered with select original ditties penned by others and changed ever so slightly so he can say he wrote them. Also, crowds at his mom’s house are raving over his extended instrumental mandolin performance of Side B of Aldo Nova’s classic second album “Subject... Aldo Nova”. Visit Marc on Instagram @iconovox and Twitter @iconovoxx.

Cee Lawrence is a country singer-songwriter from Ottawa, Canada who writes funny songs about her life. Inspired by Loretta Lynn, Miranda Lambert, and Kacey Musgraves. Visit Cee at http://www.ceelawrence.com.
