OTTAWA PUBLIC HEALTH

Highlights – Verbal Update to the Board of Health – November 2

****************************

I have written to the Mayor describing the need for a new approach to the pandemic response, for the sake of the population’s health. We need to be learning to live with COVID, to coexist with COVID, with caution.

As Members know, on October 9th, the Government of Ontario announced additional public health measures in Toronto, Ottawa and Peel Region. These modified Stage 2 restrictions came into effect October 10 and are to be in place for a minimum of 28 days, and are to be reviewed on an ongoing basis.

As we approach the 28-day mark since these new restrictions came into effect, I have suggested to the province that we find a more balanced approach for the way forward. The approach I am recommending is that we learn to coexist with COVID, with care.

The rationale for continuing measures to limit COVID-19 transmission includes: the per cent of people testing positive for COVID-19 has not declined and is still sitting at 2.7%, with some areas of the city with even higher rates; the number of outbreaks remains high, leading to hospitalizations and deaths; and the potential for rapid virus spread remains if we let our guard down and become complacent, given the ongoing widespread incidence of the virus and the lack of any significant population immunity.

The rationale to adjust measures to enable businesses to open or ramp up their operations includes some signs that the majority of people in Ottawa are and will do their part to limit COVID-19 transmission as asked when the situation is serious; negative impacts on the health of the population from the unemployment and closure of businesses resulting from the pandemic; and peoples’ need to have supports that will help them live with COVID-19 through the winter and for the foreseeable future at a time when reported mental health challenges are high and there is no end in sight for the pandemic.

I have looked at the levels of unemployment resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic response, indicators of the mental health of our community, and the challenges arising from a backlog in surgical and medical procedures, and I am concluding that more needs to be done to enable people to return to more of the usual supports and services in their lives.

Similar to how schools are able to be open with precautions in place, businesses should be able to open with precautions in place. People should be able to learn to live with COVID-19, with caution.

Toronto Blues Society has been receiving valuable input from the members of the Canadian blues community regarding the Maple Blues Awards procedures and voting, and as such, have been developing new policies and protocol to ensure the Maple Blues Award system is responsive and evolving, thanks to the feedback gathered from across Canada.

While getting nominated for a Maple Blues Award is a wonderful achievement and excitement, not all of the nominees are regular users of social media or some may not have the budgets to execute a successful advertising campaign to solicit votes.  In the pursuit of fairness for all of the nominees and transparency, social media advertising by the MBA nominees will now be banned during the public voting period for the 24th annual Maple Blues Awards.

The Ottawa Mission Foundation’s

Blue Door at your Door”

Saturday, November 7 at 8 pm.

A special one-hour show presented by Caivan Communities on CTV Ottawa and livestream on the website. Headlined by The Legendary Downchild Blues Band with special guest, Dan Aykroyd. The Blue Door at your Door program also includes performances by this stellar line-up: Colin James, Big Sugar, Matt Anderson, MonkeyJunk, and Dawn Tyler Watson.

A key feature of past Blue Door Gala events has always been meal preparation by graduates of the Food Service Training Program (FSTP) students, started over fifteen years ago by The Ottawa Mission’s Director of Food Services Chef Ric Allen-Watson. The FSTP provides applicants with the skills and confidence to work in the food industry and over 90% of graduates since 2004 have found jobs in this sector. Students pay no cost. This year, graduates will be creating a menu available for online purchase and delivery to your door.

During the program, we’ll share exciting news about the upcoming expansion of the FSTP. The former Rideau Bakery is the new location of the FSTP and has been donated to The Ottawa Mission for a 7-year period. To succeed, The Mission must raise significant funds to complete renovations at the Rideau Street location and launch an expanded food services job training program and social enterprise.

Viewers will also learn some of the many extraordinary stories about individuals who have rebuilt their lives through the support of programs at The Ottawa Mission and about how The Mission has adapted its services to keep guests and staff safe during the current pandemic while continuing to serve over 1400 meals every day, provide emergency shelter every night, and ensure that vulnerable people have access to vital healthcare services.

The Ottawa Mission Foundation hopes you’ll circle your calendar for Saturday, November 7, at 8 pm. to enjoy some fabulous music while supporting the life-changing programs of The Ottawa Mission.

BLUES ON THE RIDEAU

“COVID FIGHTER” FALL 2020 SERIES

The Fall Series is a 3-Engagement – 2 Shows per Engagement – Series, running once a month in September, October & November. Depending on how these shows go we will consider continuing with a Winter (January, February, March) and Spring (April, May, June) Series. The Series will feature Duos & Trios playing great “sit-and-listen” Blues.

Full COVID safety protocol will be TOP PRIORITY at all times. 50-person capacity (half the normal) with 6’ distancing between tables, 12’ distancing between the artists and the nearest audience member. All staff will be wearing masks. Everyone entering The Cove will be required to wear masks and when circulating in the room (but they can be removed at the tables). Hand sanitizer will be everywhere, and all will be encouraged to use it regularly throughout the night, not just on entering and leaving the building. Use of bathrooms will be restricted to one person at a time.

Plated meals will be brought to the tables by Cove staff instead of a buffet. All surfaces will be sanitized regularly. We believe that if everyone follows these safety measures, we can all safely enjoy a night out of great LIVE music!

Of course, everything depends on the COVID-19 situation. If it worsens and indoor gatherings are banned again then the Series will be postponed. On the other hand, if things improve and full capacity gatherings with no social distancing required are allowed again, we may return to full band shows. However, given the current situation, we don’t see than happening anytime soon.

Performances will include a delicious full course meal, the show and Door Prizes with proceeds going to support different local charities – all for only $70 pp (plus HST).

Note: To date the BOTR @ The Cove Series has raised over $74K for local Westport charities.

ADVANCE RESERVATIONS are required for all Shows and we encourage everyone to book ahead to avoid disappointment – especially with the reduced seating capacity.

CALL THE COVE at 613-273-3636

Well-priced accommodation is available at The Cove and nearby B&Bs for those who want to stay overnight.

BLUES FESTIVALS – NEXT YEAR?

****************************

THE 18th ANNUAL BLUES FESTIVAL GUIDE MAGAZINE

https://bluesfestivalguide.com/emag/2020/

Blues music is America’s original roots music. It is still being picked on the front porches of tar-paper shacks, but just as frequently, it is fired up loud and proud in front of a barroom (or festival) crowd.

Blues reflects hardship, trouble and strife, but also perseverance and strength of character – to know the blues is to be in touch with your true spirit and soul. The Blues Festival Guide is committed to the process of presenting blues to a wider audience, and therefore offers a weekly, electronic newsletter: Blues Festival E-Guide (free subscription) and the popular annual national print (and digital) magazine which comes out each spring.

“With so many festivals postponing or canceling, it was uncertain if we would publish it this year, but the readers kept asking,” says publisher, Kaati Gaffney. “We received countless personal calls and emails from advertisers and readers alike and have been bombarded with magazine ad and subscription orders. It seems the more we all sat at home during this pandemic, the more we thought about music and its ability to generate well-being and connection. Even though festival offerings are slimmer this year, there are still quite a few events planned for the summer and fall.”

Blues legend Bobby Rush calls the magazine: The roadmap to everything blues. Indeed, the articles offer something for everyone, all blues related, of course. This year’s engaging editorial from aficionados in the blues community includes articles from Grammy winner, Victor Wainwright, Mitch Woods, Reverend Billy C. Wirtz and Roger Stolle among others.
