Ottawa Blues This Week - 10 July 2017

It’s always wise to check with
the venue to confirm the show!
Ghost Town Blues Band
Irene’s Pub, 855 Bank Street
Wednesday, July 12; 8-11 pm

Beale Street’s latest success story, 2016 Independent Blues Award winner for "Best Contemporary Blues Song", 2015 Blues Blast Music Award Nominee for “Best Blues Band” and 2014 International Blues Challenge Runner-up is Ghost Town Blues Band. Not your grandpa’s blues band, their live show has been captivating audiences in the U.S. and Canada with a second-line horn entrance, cigar box guitars and electric push brooms to Allman Brothers style jams and even a hip-hop trombone player.

Horns, harmonies and homegrown instruments combined with an energetic and roots rich festival set makes Ghost Town Blues Band one of the “must see live bands on the festival circuit today.” Both Preston McEwen behind the drums and Matt Karner on the bass guitar are a punishing rhythm section behind multi-instrumentalist/frontman Matt Isbell with raunchy cigar box guitar licks and raspy "Dr. John-like, whiskey and gravel-soaked vocals." With the addition of Trombonist Suavo Jones, Tim Stanek on B3 and Taylor Orr on lead guitar, the grooves go from funky to "funk-nasty" as the band gains more notoriety in the blues festival and jam circuit. Ghost Town Blues Band performed all across North America at over 24 festivals in 2016 and already have 20 festivals and 5 international tours booked for 2017.

Soulstack delivers a visceral experience; one of seasoned musicians playing the music of their roots with authentic realism. It’s the sound of Staples Singers-inspired southern harmony, tremolo-drenched baritone guitar, with a late-sixties New Orleans-style rhythm section and the gurgle of a Hammond organ driving it along with the unmistakable and distinctive voice of Jon Knight. Soulstack is: Jon Knight (Vocal/Guitar), Mark Wessenger (Vocal/Piano/Organ), Chris Latta (Guitar / Baritone), Darryl ‘Harpo’ Peterson (Bass), Tom Bona (Drums), and newest member, Michael Francis (saxophone).
Here are a few LIVE Soulstack videos from Moulin Blues in Holland May 2015 :

“…the man known as ‘The King of the Chitlin Circuit’… a man who deserves being mentioned in the same context as the blues greats Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy Williamson, and B.B. King.” – American Blues Scene

Bobby Rush is the greatest bluesman currently performing. “Porcupine Meat” (released 2016) is a testament to his brilliance, which presents him at his very best, and doesn’t try to be anything that he is not. “I just try to record good music and stories,” he humbly states. With this recording, he has more than accomplished his goal, and has produced one of the finest contemporary blues albums in recent times.

Bobby truly is one of the last of the GREATS of his generation still performing and Music by the Bay Live is excited and honoured to be presenting him this August in Ajax.

*** A Message From Elwood Blues ***

Greetings Citizens,
Elwood Blues, your musical chauffeur, here.

The BluesMobile began life as the House of Blues Radio Hour, way back in 1993. Over the years we moved from the house to the road, but the mission was always the same: showcase the best in blues, blues-rock, roots music, R&B, soul, jazz, straight up rock… and all points in between.

I put the spotlight on new releases from old favorites and newbies. I played the crusty, the fresh, the seasoned, and the raw, featuring wide-ranging interviews with the musicians themselves, and many live in-house concerts, recorded exclusively for the BluesMobile.

I now give thanks to the stations, the sponsors, affiliates, producers, managers, agents, and all those hard workers who put the “business” in show business, and bigger thanks to all the players and fans who keep the show going. This series, alas, has gone as far as it can go. Our final broadcast will be July 30, 2017.

There is a crossroads dead ahead. Twenty-four years is a long time without a turn. We may turn left, or right, but we will no longer go forward.  Time for a new direction, a new road.  For us, the end of this one.

And so we leave you to your journey. Please tip a cold one for us before you continue on your way. Watch our tail lights as we vanish in the distance, then get back to it.

Remember: The blues never dies. It will never run out of road. That road goes on forever.
And thanks for riding along.

For those who live south of the city, OBS member Bob Cavan notes that the National Public Radio (NPR) radio signal at 89.5 FM in Canton NY comes in pretty strong in Manotick. Bob recommends two shows in particular. Bob says “The Blue Note” Tuesdays 3 pm-5 pm, and “The Radio Bob Show” Wednesdays 3 pm-5 pm are both excellent shows – blues, ‘50s & ‘60s, rock & roll, R&B.

It’s all about the Blues, Jazz and its derivatives from around the globe and just around the corner. Songs rarely heard, from the very first recordings all the way to indie artists who consciously push the envelope to the next generation sounds of the genre; some older releases will be spun - just because the album in old, doesn't mean it's forgotten, thus the "On The Side" part of the show's title.
Streaming great Blues, Roots, Soul, R&B, Folk, East Coast and Celtic music across Canada and around the world 24/7/365.
Check out their Canadian Blues shows and hosts, including James Doran’s ‘Inside The Blues’, Brant Zwicker’s ‘At The Crossroads’, along with Mark Stenzler's ‘Blues Zeppelin’ from Switzerland … and lots more Canadian and international Blues shows.
