OTTAWA PUBLIC HEALTH
Highlights from August
14 Special Statement
****************************
Working
with businesses and employers
Further
to the guidance provided on our website and in the City’s Business Reopening
Toolkit we are looking at additional ways to help decrease
community transmission. We are encouraging all local businesses to actively
screen their employees, use customer and employee logs and promote mask
use in areas not covered by the City‘s Temporary Mask By-law. And, we
are hosting a series of Business Reopening Workshops to provide
sector-specific considerations for a safer reopening, covering off topics such
as health and safety guidelines, planning for physical distancing, use of cloth
masks and industry specific issues.
We
will continue to monitor workplace and business settings and provide further
guidance and information as required.
It’s
OK to not be OK
COVID-19
has impacted everyone differently, but we are consistently hearing about
the negative mental health impacts from business
owners, employers and employees, parents, children and
youth and older adults.
It is OK not be OK. Please continue to check OPH’s webpage for mental health resources for all ages. Let’s help each other through these hard times.
Ottawa, you are doing a great job! With every precaution you take, we are one step closer to limiting the transmission of COVID-19.

So, we have reluctantly decided not to hold an autumn concert season. We sincerely hope to re-book some of the same fabulous artists as soon as possible in 2021.

Southminster United Church
Steinway Grand Piano Campaign
****************************
From Roland Graham, Musical Director, Southminster United Church:
I'm
excited to announce that the campaign to raise money for Southminster's
new Steinway Model D grand piano (read up on that here if
not in the loop) has passed a notable milestone!
Having raised just over $35,000 between donations made
through Canadahelps.org and
those mailed in by cheque, we have just over half the amount needed for
Southminster to secure the purchase and take possession of the
piano!!
If
you haven't donated because you were waiting to see how things pan out, wait no
further! So far only 250 people of our list of 3000 supporters have
donated. That's over a quarter of the target achieved by fewer than
10% of our numbers! I find that extremely encouraging!
Visit Canadahelps.org to
donate instantly online, or mail a cheque made out to Southminster United
Church at 15 Aylmer Ave, K1S 3X1. All donations will be charitably
receipted in time for your 2020 tax returns.
Please send any questions about the campaign to SouthminsterSteinway2020@gmail.com.
Thank you for your time. Stay tuned for more news!

Music

Bill
Durst and VOODOO Pawn Shop
The
Pines, Uxbridge, ON – Outdoor Event
Saturday,
August 22 @ 4 pm (gates 3 pm)
$45 Advance + $3.00 Ticketing Fee
(subject to HST)
No sales accepted at the gate. BYOB + Garbage-Free Picnic.
Always an audience favourite, Bill Durst is a Canadian Blues-Rock-Roots guitarist, singer, songwriter and entertainer who has written and recorded over 125 songs on 12 albums with 7 national radio chart hits. Bill has toured across North America and in Europe and tours extensively in Canada.
As a kid growing up in Wingham and then London, Ontario, Bill was heavily influenced by Motown, R&B, Toronto Psychedelic Soul music as well as the British Blues Invasion and Jimi Hendrix.
Bill’s entrance on the national/international stage was with his classic rock band Thundermug formed from London R&B groups in 1969. By the summer of 1972, the band had a number one hit and a fan following in Eastern Canada. The band went on to record a total of 5 albums, (3 albums in the early/mid 1970s and two CDs in the mid-1990s) releasing records in the US and Europe. Bill put out his first two solo releases in the mid-1980’s but it wasn’t until the early 2000s that Durst got some real career momentum. In 2004 he proclaimed his intention to start up a “little, fuzzy, psychedelic blues band” and since then Bill and his co-writer Joe DeAngelis have produced 5 full length CDs: The Wharncliffe Sessions (’05), The Great Willy Mammoth (’09), Bill Durst Live (‘12) and Hard And Heavy (’13) Good Good Lovin (’15).
VOODOO Pawn Shop delivers ‘In Your Face Blues’ by pawning old blues standards and reassembling new blues stylings with an edge. Mirek Lalas on keys, Paul Murray on drums & backing vocals, Rafael Minassian on bass & backing vocals, Ted Wright on lead vocals & harmonica and Wolf Endlicher on lead guitar, this collaborative delivers blues-with-an-edge. Influences include Eric Clapton, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Joe Bonamassa, Buddy Guy, Cream, ZZ TOP, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan and countless others.
RAIN OR SHINE EVENT - Although we have plenty of seating, it’s a good idea to bring lawn chairs & shelter from the sun (not rain!)

Born in Canada and raised in Michigan, Terry first got introduced to the Blues
in small Detroit clubs watching legends like John Lee Hooker, Buddy Guy, Muddy
Waters and Howlin’ Wolf. He was the first trumpet player in an orchestra at the
time. He immediately self-taught himself the guitar and was good enough at a
young age that the Wolf asked him to join his band!
He moved to Ottawa in the late ’60s and helped introduce the Blues to that
city. He also discovered Reggae at the same time and began fusing the two into
a unique sound which he maintains to this day. In the early ’70s he formed one
of Ottawa’s most popular bands of that era - Heaven’s Radio.
In the ’80s Terry & his wife Kathy started spending their winters in
Jamaica - and still do to this day - where he is in large demand as a
multi-genre performer. For 6 months of the year you can find him and his band
playing at some of the coolest venues on the island. Terry loves to collaborate
with musicians of all different styles and genres bringing them together into a
distinctive blend with an almost hypnotic groove.
He is joined for this gig by his old friend Peter Measroch (originally from
South Africa, now living in Montreal) on keyboards & tabla and Salah Adem
(originally from Eritrea now living in Ottawa) on African percussion. Terry on
vocals, guitar and harmonica. Come and listen to what Blues/Reggae/African
fusion sounds like!

September
11-12 – Duelling Pianos (Dave
Kalil, Tyler Kealey, Todd Huckabone)
Dave
Kalil, Tyler Kealey and Todd Huckabone are a staple of the music scene in
Ottawa. Known as the Duelling Pianos, their musical ability and interactive
personalities have captivated audiences since they formed the group in 2002.
With both Dave and Tyler at the keyboards, they are held together by Todd on guitar
to form a solid show of endless classic hits spanning several decades of music.
Playing a blend of requests from the audience, their blistering guitar and
piano solos, three-part harmonies, and random comedic impromptu moments
have won over the crowds they perform for time after time.
September
18-19 – Rebecca Noelle
Blessed
with a searing three octave range, Rebecca has been featured on CBC's The
Vinyl Cafe, BBC Radio in the U.K., Sirius Radio in America, and Radio Bremen in
Germany.
Although Rebecca has had the privilege to try her hand at just about every
musical style she's wanted to over the years, it’s her natural affinity for
jazz that sets this stunning singer apart. With a velvety voice that is simply
unforgettable, Rebecca expresses a candid honesty both lyrically and musically
that nurtures the connection between audience and artist.
September
– 26-27 – HOROJO Trio
HOROJO
Trio is a soul rockin’ rhythm & blues act that features drummer Jamie
Holmes, singer/keyboardist Jeff Rogers, and guitarist/singer JW-Jones, who
was named the year's Best Guitarist at the IBC.
Jeff is known as one of the hardest working artists in the nation’s capital
clocking over 250 shows per year. The Ottawa Citizen says “his voice
practically bowls you over with intensity, as sweet, rich and gooey as molasses
in a heatwave”, while Nick Krewen (Globe & Mail, Billboard) calls JUNO
nominee JW-Jones “a frequent resident of Billboard’s Top 10 Blues
charts and roots radio favourite”. Jamie is one of the most versatile drummers
in the country and has toured throughout North America and Europe and
recorded in Nashville with Grammy-winning producer Tom Hambridge.

which we fully support. Hopefully you can all keep an open mind and celebrate

You can't all come to us at the same time, so we are bringing the show to YOU. There will be FOUR separate performances across two nights with a strict capacity of 50 at each show. Fewer than 200 tickets will be sold in total.
We are working four times harder than normal, so we will be setting the ticket price a bit higher than pre-COVID times at $30. A portion of this will be going to the Rainbow to help keep the lights on at one of Ottawa's longest-lived live music venues.

BLUES ON
THE RIDEAU
****************************
BLUES
ON THE RIDEAU
“COVID FIGHTER” FALL 2020 SERIES
The Fall Series is a 3-Engagement – 2 Shows per Engagement – Series, running once a month in September, October & November. Depending on how these shows go we will consider continuing with a Winter (January, February, March) and Spring (April, May, June) Series. The Series will feature Duos & Trios playing great “sit-and-listen” Blues.
Full COVID safety protocol will be TOP PRIORITY at all times. 50-person capacity (half the normal) with 6’ distancing between tables, 12’ distancing between the artists and the nearest audience member. All staff will be wearing masks. Everyone entering The Cove will be required to wear masks and when circulating in the room (but they can be removed at the tables). Hand sanitizer will be everywhere, and all will be encouraged to use it regularly throughout the night, not just on entering and leaving the building. Use of bathrooms will be restricted to one person at a time.
Plated meals will be brought to the tables by Cove staff instead of a buffet. All surfaces will be sanitized regularly. We believe that if everyone follows these safety measures, we can all safely enjoy a night out of great LIVE music!
Of course, everything depends on the COVID-19 situation. If it worsens and indoor gatherings are banned again then the Series will be postponed. On the other hand, if things improve and full capacity gatherings with no social distancing required are allowed again, we may return to full band shows. However, given the current situation, we don’t see than happening anytime soon.
Performances
will include a delicious full course meal, the show and Door Prizes with
proceeds going to support different local charities – all for only $70 pp (plus
HST).
Note:
To date the BOTR @ The Cove Series has raised over $74K for local Westport
charities.
ADVANCE
RESERVATIONS are required for all Shows and we encourage everyone to book ahead
to avoid disappointment – especially with the reduced seating capacity.
CALL
THE COVE at 613-273-3636

BLUES FESTIVALS
– NEXT YEAR?
****************************
THE
18th ANNUAL BLUES FESTIVAL GUIDE MAGAZINE
https://bluesfestivalguide.com/emag/2020/
Blues
music is America’s original roots music. It is still being picked on the
front porches of tar-paper shacks, but just as frequently, it is fired up loud
and proud in front of a barroom (or festival) crowd.
Blues reflects hardship, trouble and strife, but also perseverance and strength
of character – to know the blues is to be in touch with your true spirit and
soul. The Blues Festival Guide is committed to the process of
presenting blues to a wider audience, and therefore offers a weekly, electronic
newsletter: Blues Festival
E-Guide (free subscription) and the popular annual
national print (and digital) magazine which comes out each spring.
“With so many festivals postponing or canceling, it was uncertain if we would
publish it this year, but the readers kept asking,” says publisher, Kaati
Gaffney. “We received countless personal calls and emails from advertisers and
readers alike and have been bombarded with magazine ad and subscription orders.
It seems the more we all sat at home during this pandemic, the more we thought
about music and its ability to generate well-being and connection. Even though
festival offerings are slimmer this year, there are still quite a few events planned
for the summer and fall.”
Blues legend Bobby Rush calls the magazine: The roadmap to
everything blues. Indeed, the articles offer something for everyone, all
blues related, of course. This year’s engaging editorial from aficionados in
the blues community includes articles from Grammy winner, Victor
Wainwright, Mitch Woods, Reverend Billy C. Wirtz and Roger Stolle among
others.
