FUNDRAISING DRIVE

CKCU needs your
support now more than ever. The Student Choice Initiative (SCI), one of the
changes in education from our current provincial government, invites students
to opt-out of student fees. CKCU relies heavily on the generosity of Carleton
students, who democratically established a student levy that supports the
station, along with additional funding from listener pledges. This change
places financial uncertainly on CKCU’s future so the funding drive period has
been extended this year and the goal has been increased to $250,000.
CKCU has provided a
strong voice for the community for 44 years. With more than 120 programs each
week, all produced and presented by volunteers in more than a dozen languages,
CKCU plays a key part in the development and success of Ottawa’s music and
cultural community.

The
old Willie Dixon adage, “blues is truth,” perfectly describes the
searing, contemporary blues-rock of world-renowned guitarist and vocalist Coco
Montoya. Taught by the “Master of the Telecaster,” Albert Collins, but
with a hard-edged sound and style all his own, Montoya mixes his forceful,
melodic guitar playing and passionate vocals with memorable songs, delivering
the blues’ hardest truths.
He
earned his status as a master guitarist and soul-powered vocalist through years
of paying his dues as a sideman with Collins (first as a drummer) and then with John
Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, before launching his solo career in 1993. Five years of
constant touring with Collins and ten years with Mayall turned him into a
monster player and dynamic performer. Montoya has released eight solo
albums—including three for Alligator between 2000 and 2007—and has played at
clubs, concert halls and major festivals all over the world.

Rowlands, affectionately known as Rock 'n Rowlands has spent time with
thousands of music artists. His inside stories are something you don't want to
miss; they're great, funny, sometimes sad, but certainly inspirational.
John R. Rowlands has been photographing music and movie celebrities since 1960. His first paid job was with Brenda Lee and after looking at his prints her management sent him his first check for $35. The Brenda Lee work led to shoots with Sam Cooke, Bobby Vee, Duane Eddy and then the British Invasion with acts like Gerry and the Pacemakers, The Dave Clark Five, The Rolling Stones and in 1965 and 1966, The Beatles.
His 58 years in the business has taken him around the world, accomplished 110 Album/CD covers and allowed him to work with almost everyone of note in pop/rock music through five decades. Worldwide magazines and trade papers have featured his work from London to Hong Kong, and from highway billboards to point of sale posters, his work has stayed in the public eye to this day.
J. R. Rowlands has always been an industry photographer working behind the scenes for every major record company in the world, leading magazines, radio and television networks and other associated clients. As such he now has a body of work from those shots he still owns and controls that in most cases have never-before been seen by the public. Some of the artists he has worked with over the years include: David Bowie, The Beatles, Elvis Presley, Dick Van Dyke, 4 tours with the Rolling Stones, Jefferson Airplane, Diana Ross, Eric Clapton, KISS, Madonna, Michael Jackson, The Police, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, The Grateful Dead, Blondie, Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf, Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, Peter Gabriel, Ike and Tina Turner, The Who, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Alice Cooper, B.B. guitar-slinger and vocalist, Ronnie Baker Brooks and Chicago harmonica
master and vocalist Billy Branch, among today’s foremost inheritors of the
Chicago blues tradition and keepers of the flame, unite live on-stage to give

rock songs down to their Chicago blues essence and bring the songs of Jagger-Richards

sound on the gritty, urban electrified and amplified music of Muddy

The Concert: CHICAGO
PLAYS THE STONES is an exhilarating, high-energy live stage performance
that presents its audience with classic Rolling Stones songs arranged
in the Chicago blues styles ranging from the early-traditional to modern- contemporary.
Performances also
include songs from the 1940s Mississippi Delta by a young Muddy Waters up
through the ground-breaking electrification of the country blues in Chicago by
Waters and other pioneering Windy City blues artists. These blues sounds that
traveled from the deep south up north to Chicago were the musical DNA that put
the young Brits squarely on the path to become The Rolling Stones, the
group that would eventually, with the Chicago blues at it core, have a lasting
effect on rock and pop music.
Imagine the classic Rolling
Stones songs as played by their Chicago blues heroes of the Golden Age such
as Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Little Walter, Jimmy Reed, Willie Dixon or
Sonny Boy Williamson. What would those songs sound like? Would they sound

popular demand, one of Ontario’s most talked about acts returns to Music by the
Bay Live. This all-star Canadian cast of award-winning blues and roots
musicians, under the direction of Juno award winning producer and musical director, Lance
Anderson, will be playing The Uxbridge Music Hall on November 30, celebrating
the 43rd Anniversary of THE BAND’s last concert in 1976 and The BAND’s amazing
contribution to our shared Canadian musical heritage.
This
is an all-star line-up, featuring Jerome Levon Avis (Levon Helm’s godson), on
drums and vocals with special guests and a nine-piece band led by Maple Blues
2014 ‘Keyboardist of the Year’ Lance Anderson. The performance will recreate
the atmosphere of The Band’s final concert, which was captured in Martin
Scorcese’s award-winning concert film, The Last Waltz.
On
the American Thanksgiving of 1976 at San Francisco’s Winterland Ballroom, The
BAND performed what they called their “Last Waltz,” and invited many of
their friends to join in the celebration. These friends included Bob Dylan,
Ronnie Hawkins, Van Morrison, and Canadians Neil Young and Joni
Mitchell and others who performed with The Band on this special night.
In
this homage to The Last Waltz, Anderson’s special guests will perform the songs
played and sung by these guest artists at the memorable 1976 concert.
Backed by a 9-piece band that includes Jerome Levon Avis, Terry Blersh on
guitar, Dennis Pinhorn (The Hawks) on bass, Rob Gusevs (Blood, Sweat and Tears)
on organ and Anderson (Joint Chiefs of Soul) on piano and vocals, this is
a group of seasoned veterans who love the music. Anderson’s band also features
a stellar four-piece horn section including David Dunlop (Boss Brass) on
trumpet, Gord Meyers (Blood, Sweat and Tears) on trombone and tuba, Chris
Murphy (The Maple Blues Band) on tenor sax and Simon Wallis (Lighthouse) on
baritone sax. An all-star band!
The
Band is a Canadian national treasure, with four members of the legendary roots
music group originally from southern Ontario. In the 1960s, they were initially
brought together as “The Hawks” by Ronnie Hawkins and later gained
international recognition as Bob Dylan’s band on his ground-breaking electric
tours. This 120 minute performance of The Last Waltz includes a wide selection
of fan favourites, such as The Band’s ‘The Weight’, ’The Night They Drove Ol’
Dixie Down’, ‘Up On Cripple Creek’, ‘Life is a Carnival’, ‘The Shape I’m In’,
‘Rag Mama Rag’, ‘It Makes No Difference’, ‘Ophelia’ and many more.

Northern Hearts is a powerful blues pop duo whose songs are at
once playful and soulful. They recently performed at the Cultivate Festival and
Cobourg Waterfront Festival, showcased at Folk Alliance International in Montreal,
and reached the Top 100 of CBC Music's Searchlight Competition. Their debut EP,
"of all these flames," is available everywhere you buy and stream

The
Angelina Hunter Trio, also affectionately known as AHT, is comprised of three
friends who first met about twenty years ago as University of Ottawa students
and longtime soldiers of the Ottawa music scene. The group is a vast
amalgamation of styles and influences that are stirred in the pot and blown
back out. They were chosen to represent Ottawa in the International Blues
Challenge in Memphis in 2018; getting to play the blues along Beale Street was
a dream come true. Since then, they’ve had a great run of various festival
dates, including the Ottawa RBC Bluesfest, the Orangeville Blues and Jazz Festival,
The Calabogie Ribs and Blues Festival and others. Our debut album, “Roll With
It”, has received rave reviews and is available across all digital music
retailers.

to Canada in 1970. He was already a guitar prodigy at 11 years old, and when
most kids that age are playing sports, Colin was meeting and being mentored by
one of his musical heroes, the great bluesman Howlin’ Wolf, which helped
set the youngster on a course to pursue the sounds of his dreams. That
encounter helped fuel a career that has featured his work on literally hundreds
of albums. At last count, the total of recordings on which he has played approaches
400, while over 100 albums bear the “Produced by Colin Linden” credit.
