It
was Pat Moore and Roland Doucet performing classic jazz, R ‘n’ B and rock ‘n’
roll together! I love these two musicians!! They are both SO talented!
From three rockin', acoustic Everley Brothers tunes sung in perfect harmony.... Through Van Morrison's "Moondance", Ray Charles' "Georgia on My Mind" and "Hit the Road Jack", Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World" Frank Sinatra's "Fly me to the Moon" and many, many others, Pat and Roland sang and played their hearts out on a three hour journey through the heart of Americana... Jazz, Blues, R n' B, Country, Rock n' Roll…. You name it! They can play it!

Paul Weber
Ottawa Songs Project
Pressed, 750 Gladstone Street
Saturday, October 20 @ 8 pm; $10 at the door
Local musician Paul
Weber is debuting his "Ottawa Songs" project. Paul is a
Canadian singer, songwriter, and guitarist who has performed across Canada in
various incarnations. His most recent project involves writing songs
about Ottawa past and present. The songs performed on the acoustic guitar
combine a range of styles, from folk to jazz, Latin to African with many other
influences in between. Some themes range from gripping stories about local
history (‘Three Years on the Rideau Canal’, ‘The Great Fire of 1870’), to
modern day tales of bikers and bouncers (‘Ode to Gerry Barber’), street people
(‘Christmas on Murray Street’), construction workers (‘Heron Road Bridge Song’)
and surviving a local winter (‘The Ottawa Samba’).
The decision to
write about Ottawa came about from his passion for local history and folklore,
his love of storytelling and a strong belief we need to tell our own stories
and not just import them from abroad. Storytelling, humour and connection are
what his live performances are about, in fact sometimes he just won't shut the
heck up (he's got a song about that too!).

Blues On The Rideau presents
Samantha Martin & Delta Sugar
The Cove Inn, Westport ON

Proceeds
to Westport Library
Ever
since this band’s debut release “Send The Nightingale” came out in 2015,
garnering 4 Maple Blues Award nominations and major national and international
attention, we’ve wanted to have them come to play BOTR. Samantha’s dynamic
Blues/Soul/Gospel voice has been further enhanced in Delta Sugar by two great
female co-singers – Sherie Marshall and Mwansa Mwansa with a full rhythm
section behind them lead by guitarist Michael McCallum. The band consists of 6
to 11 players depending on the venue. Their latest record “Run To Me”, released
in April 2018, took an even larger leap forward involving a number of Canada’s
best Roots/Blues/Soul artists including special guests Steve Marriner of
MonkeyJunk fame and Suzie Vinnick. The record immediately went to #1 on the
Roots Music Chart, #14 on the U.S Blues chart and received major airplay around
the world. Samantha & the band leave for Europe on a 10-country tour with
75 shows scheduled between January and March 2019. We’re VERY lucky – and very
pleased - to have them coming to play BOTR before they go.

Paul DesLauriers Band
Rainbow Bistro, 76 Murray Street
Friday, November 2 @ 9 pm; $15
Following up on the
success of their self-titled album from 2014, The Paul DesLauriers Band returns
with the aptly titled “Relentless”, a genuine blues-rock escapade featuring 10
new songs encompassing their most original and powerful work to date.
Relentless indeed if you consider the pace at which the band has been working
with touring, writing and recording. The awards they keep racking up only
confirm that hard work pays off. Adding to their multiple Maple Blues and Lys
Blues awards and nominations they had a number one album on the iTunes Canada
Blues Chart and in January 2016 they took home 2nd Place among 119
competing bands from around the world at the 32nd annual International Blues
Challenge, held by the Blues Foundation in Memphis.
Hot on the heels of
that win they returned to Montreal to complete writing and recording “Relentless”
and the result captures the very essence of The Paul DesLauriers Band. A true
collaborative effort on every front, singer-guitarist Paul DesLauriers, bassist
Greg Morency and drummer Sam Harrisson approached this recording the same way
they have in the past, three men playing together in the same room, capturing
performances live off the floor; and this time they applied that philosophy to
the whole creative process, writing and arranging all the music together from
the ground up. Lyrics were penned by DesLauriers and long-time collaborator
Alec McElcheran. Through every track, the personalities shine through, but what
is most striking is the unity and the maturity radiating from this trio at the
top of their game. If the last album, 2014’s award-winning self-titled release,
solidified the bands stance in the Canadian blues scene, this album as well as
their remarkable achievements over the last two years cements their position as
one of the top Canadian blues-rock acts and will maximize their influence on
the international stage.

Sean Pinchin
Rainbow Bistro, 76 Murray Street
Thursday, November 8
Well, now that he's
got our attention he's made his mind up to make good use of it. “Monkey
Brain” is a guitar tour de force, a gritty mash of the history of roots guitar
music torn down and built back up again. The title track is a grimy ode to our
inner, more base impulses: "When life gets to me. My head starts to
change. I give in to my Monkey Brain". On the swampy ‘Charity Case’, Sean
pleads with his lover: "Why do you treat me like some charity case? It's
not your business if I'm sober or straight"... we've all been there. ‘Hard
Luck’ is a 21st-century gospel dirge that has Sean's searing lead guitar
crescendo with a one-note Neil Young-style squeal into its signature riff with
layered gospel harmonies pleading wordlessly over deep piano drones. ‘Living In
The Past’ eases us in with Sean's falsetto before the album's engine room Adam
Warner (drums) & Mark McIntyre (bass) launch into its signature groove.
Sean's guitar weaves in and out and Emma-Lee's backing vocals push the
whole thing over the top. The album takes a turn with ‘Goin' Hobo’'s
junk-yard percussion and tongue-in-cheek lyrics about being sick of the grind
and packing it all in for the hobo life cowritten with Juno winner Steve
Strongman. The album closes with the duo of ‘Monsters’, an acoustic stomper
keeping with the theme of fighting one's own demons and ‘Get Burned’, yet more
evidence of Sean's guitar prowess, pivoting effortlessly between clean sinewy
playing and ultra-dirty riff-mongering. Throughout, Sean delivers stories of
personal struggle and triumph after living with depression for many years.
Realizing that his grief could be put to constructive use, he began writing
about everything that caused him pain, fear and heartache. “Monkey Brain” is
his blues and he comes by it honestly.

Dueling Pianos
Centrepointe Studio
Theatre, 101 Centrepointe Drive
Friday, November 16 @ 8 pm
Friday, November 16 @ 8 pm
True-blue Ottawans already know: the Dueling Pianos are Tyler Kealey and Dave Kalil on two sets of ivory keys, with guitarist Todd Huckabone and the audience acting as referee. Each unique show features an endless series of classic hits spanning decades of music. Playing a blend of requests from the audience, blistering guitar and piano solos, three-part harmonies, and random impromptu comedic moments, their show has won over the crowds for which they perform time after time. The group gained a legion of loyal fans as a regular Saturday act at Sens House in the Byward Market.
Dave has been entertaining audiences across Canada since 1976 as a solo piano player and singer but has had the most fun this past decade playing with – or against – singer-songwriter and fellow pianist Tyler. The two claim influences from musicians like Supertramp and the Eagles, from Billy Joel to the Beatles. In the intimate setting and beautiful acoustics of Centrepointe’s Studio theatre, the Dueling Pianos’ effortless skill and energy will delight newcomers and long-time fans alike!

With Special Guest Roxanne Potvin
Rainbow Bistro, 76 Murray Street
Saturday, November 17 @ 9 pm
Alternately menacing
and celebratory, brooding and boastful, Bharath and his Rhythm Four gaze into
the past not with nostalgia, but with stunning passion. With Bharath Rajakumar as its
charismatic core, the Rhythm Four create an ensemble sound that heightens “deep
blues” traditionalism with punch and urgency. Colin Perry’s unobtrusive yet
ever ready guitar playing sympathetically supports Bharath’s mercurial harp
playing and stunning vocals, while the firm pulse of Costa Zafiropoulos’ bass
rest upon Ben Caissie’s assertive drum beats. A perfect refinement and
distillation of their forefathers, Bharath and his Rhythm Four’s relentless
drive never fails to make an impression.
On her new five-song
EP All It Was, JUNO Award-nominated singer/songwriter,
multi-instrumentalist and producer Roxanne Potvin goes deeper into her personal
journey, adding more elements to an ever-expanding sound.

Rainbow Anniversary Party
With The Commotions
76 Murray Street
Friday, November 30 @ 9 pm; $12
Ottawa’s The
Commotions have sidestepped the lightweight pop craze and taken the back roads
straight into the hearts of their loyal followers, earning unwavering support
from the true lovers of genuine, unsullied soul music. This 12-piece, sharply
dressed, original throwback to the days of Motown is an evolved collection of
Canada's top funk & jazz players. This band originally united to provide a
Canadian contingent to Funk Brother's (Motown Records) lead vocalist Delbert
Nelson as "Delbert & The Commotions". The band's Musical
Director, Brian Asselin honed his skills performing with acts such as The Funk
Brothers, and his original music has been featured on HBO’s Looking and ABC’s The
Fosters in the U.S. The band features vocalists Jeff Rogers (Silver Creek and
The Cooper Brothers) and Rebecca Noelle (The PepTides, Rumours, La Voix and
David Gogo.) With a sonically monumental performance and an energizing visual
display, The Commotions command every room they play, drawing in audiences with
their sizzling brass section, thumping backbeat, and sensitive ballads.

By
almost any ordinary metric, like a marriage or a job, 10 years is a respectable
milestone. For a hard-touring and recording band, however, a decade is a
sweat-soaked, anecdote-amassing feat. Appropriately, the corresponding
anniversary gift is way better something made of tin.
Winner of 2018’s Blues Album of the Year Juno Award (their second overall), the latest and fifth release from singer/guitarist and harp player Steve Marriner, drummer Matt Sobb, and guitarist Tony D is precisely the kind of corker you’d expect from a trio of musical veterans who, between them, have boosted luminaries from Fabulous Thunderbird Kim Wilson to Buddy Guy, the late Jeff Healey to the lamented Stevie Ray Vaughan.
Launched in Ottawa in 2008, MonkeyJunk —handle inspired by delta blues great Son House, who once intoned, “I’m talking about the blues, I ain’t talking ’bout no monkeyjunk!” — have consistently updated contemporary blues with a blistering mix of chops, soul, grit, humour and harmony.
MonkeyJunk plays for keeps, as evidenced by the 10 electrifying tracks on their latest album, their first ever to feature bass guitar. “We wanted to push ourselves to work hard and to work efficiently and focused — to see what we could come up with in a shorter period of time,” drummer Sobb explains of “Time To Roll”. “The result is a brash, groovy-as-always collection of songs that show where the band has been and where we have arrived in many years of writing, recording, and touring.”
In addition to the above-mentioned pair of Juno Award wins (out of three nominations), MonkeyJunk has also netted an impressive 21 Maple Blues Awards, two Canadian Independent Music Awards, and a Blues Music Award (USA) for Best New Artist, for 2009’s sizzling “Tiger In Your Tank”. And while that recognition is swell, all band members agree that the real thrill of playing in MonkeyJunk is just that — playing, especially live, where the music’s ecstatic sway on crowds is right there to behold.

On his seventh
album, acclaimed Canadian songwriter Rob Lutes does what he has done for years:
kicks up a little dust, wades into some deep waters and tackles the realities
of the world with depth, humour and a unique musical style.
Situated at the intersection of the blues, folk, Americana and contemporary singer-songwriter genres, “Walk in the Dark” is an exquisite collection of songs that highlight Lutes’ unmistakable voice and literary writing style. Co-produced with celebrated Montreal producer and Cirque de Soleil collaborator Rob Heaney, the album features a group of Canada's finest roots and blues players, including guitarist Rob MacDonald and keyboardist Bob Stagg along with noted artists Ian Kelly, Guy Bélanger and Joe Grass. It finds Lutes, a Kerrville New Folk winner, Maple Blues and Canadian Folk Music Awards nominee, exploring a wide range of subjects and paying homage to some heroes: James Cotton (on ‘There's No Way to Tell You That Tonight’) and guitarist Joseph Spence (on the instrumental ‘Spence’). Recorded mainly over three days in late January in a small studio in Montreal's Notre Dame de Grace borough, the recording captures the essence of Lutes' soulful voice and rhythmic guitar style, enveloped by a group of players who are no stranger to his groove. Featuring 12 new originals, including two co-writes with award-winning Americana songwriter Dale Boyle, and the forgotten John Prine gem ‘Rocky Mountain Time’, the album digs deep into the roots of Canadian and American music and delivers another strong statement. "This album, of all of them, was a journey into the unknown, which is why I like the title so much," Lutes says. "With a great co-producer, and a group of phenomenal players and friends, I went in to the studio to find these songs. And I really feel like we did that."
