his 18th album, “Blue Highways”, Colin pays tribute

his band and very happy with the sound they had created on stage. What better
time to make a record! Especially the record Colin had been itching to make for
years – a collection of some of his favourite blues tracks. In less than a week
Colin was recording in The Warehouse Studios in Vancouver and in just two
days, “Blue Highways” was born.

Friday, February 10 @
8:30 pm; $25
"Understanding the order of time is important to
anyone hoping to manifest a dream," says Valerie June. "There is a
time to push, and a time to gently tend the garden."
Since the release of her 2013 breakout “Pushin' Against A Stone”, June has been patiently at work in the garden of song, nurturing seedlings with love and care into the lush bloom that is her stunning new album, “The Order Of Time”. Some songs grew from seeds planted more than a decade ago, others blossomed overnight when she least expected them to, but every track bears the influence of time. Thankfully for us, June was ready when time told her to harvest these songs. In the garden, as in life, there is a time for everything and the moment has finally arrived to enjoy the fruits of all her labor. With “The Order Of Time”, Valerie June has prepared a bountiful feast, and there's a seat at the table for everyone.

NAC Presents
Ray Bonneville
NAC Azrieli Theatre,
1 Elgin Street
Tuesday, March 20 @ 8
pm
Every now and then, you run across someone with a
library's worth of stories to tell. But unlike the raconteurs who regale
friends with well-embellished versions of their exploits, these storytellers
have lived so much, they reveal chapters of their hard-won wisdom slowly,
carefully, like layers peeled from an onion.
Ray Bonneville didn't even open his storybook until his
early 40s, some 20 years after he started performing. But with a style that
sometimes draws comparisons to JJ Cale and Daniel Lanois, this
blues-influenced, New Orleans-inspired "song and groove man," as he's
been so aptly described, luckily found his rightful calling.
On his fourth Red House Records album, “Easy Gone”, Bonneville delivers 10 reasons why patience pays off. In each, his guitarwork shimmers like stars emerging at dusk. His voice carries the rich, natural timbre of time, though underneath that pearl-like smoothness, one hears its gritty core. His harmonica rhythms add even more texture to his sound.

Music By The Bay Live
presents
Amy Helm
76 Church Street
South, Ajax ON
Saturday, April 7,
8-11 pm; advance $75+HST; at the door $85
Although the personally charged, organically soulful “Didn’t
It Rain” is her first release under her own name, Amy Helm has been making
music for most of her life. She’s already won widespread praise as a singer,
songwriter and live performer, first as a member of the celebrated altcountry
collective Ollabelle and subsequently for her extensive work with her father,
musical icon Levon Helm, who passed away in 2012.
Blessed with a commanding, deeply expressive voice and an
uncanny songwriting skill that instinctively draws upon a deep well of American
musical traditions, Amy Helm delivers a timelessly powerful statement with “Didn’t
It Rain”.

with
John Tackaberry
The show features a
heavy dose of electric blues and rhythm and blues, with the occasional
selection of sixties soul. The first hour is dedicated to artist profiles and
reviews of recordings on particular labels. In the second hour there is a blues
calendar, a rundown of events in Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa, and interviews with “new and reissued blues
and rhythm and blues tracks on wax”, alternating with “live blues and R&B
for a Sunday night” in the last half hour of the show.

A Mellow Tone
Hosted by Bernard
Stepien, Ron Steeds, Allan Wigney, Jean-Michel Labatut and Aidian Thomas, ‘In A
Mellow Tone’ introduces listeners to the entire history of jazz, from its
beginnings to the latest innovations. Every program has a focus; on a musician,
a city, a festival, an instrument, a record label or on recent releases. The

NPR from Canton NY
For those who live
south of the city, OBS member Bob Cavan notes that the National Public Radio
(NPR) radio signal at 89.5 FM in Canton NY comes in pretty strong in Manotick.
Bob recommends two shows in particular. Bob says “The Blue Note”
Tuesdays 3 pm-5 pm, and “The Radio Bob Show” Wednesdays 3 pm-5
pm are both excellent shows – blues, ‘50s & ‘60s, rock & roll,
R&B.

Unsung
and On The Side
With
Carolyn Fe
Tuesdays,
7-9 pm
Re-broadcast Saturday
10 am – noon & Sunday 2-4 pm (all times EST)
It’s all about the
Blues, Jazz and its derivatives from around the globe and just around the
corner. Songs rarely heard, from the very first recordings all the way to indie
artists who consciously push the envelope to the next generation sounds of the
genre; some older releases will be spun - just because the album in old,
doesn't mean it's forgotten, thus the "On The Side" part of the
show's title.
