NAC
Presents
Whitehorse
With
Begonia
NAC
Babs Asper Theatre, 1 Elgin Street
Tuesday,
November 21 @ 7:30 pm
Whitehorse's brazen sonic breadth encompasses psychedelic
surf, arid border rock, lo-fi ingenuity and icy ‘80s sparseness. New
album, “Panther In The Dollhouse”, brings a twist to Whitehorse's studio
approach with the addition of beats and bleeps from NYC hip-hop production duo
Like Minds (Kanye West, Snoop Dogg). But while each new album sees the duo's
sound evolve, the essence of Whitehorse's musical identity remains their
dizzying guitar playing and vocal chemistry.
On “Panther In The Dollhouse”, Whitehorse delves
deep into body politics and explores questions of consent, self-determination
and, ultimately, freedom, largely from the perspective of women. Layers of
retro psychedelic pop bubble up on ‘Nighthawks’, a song that explores the
constructs of perpetrator and victim on the streets. “Panther In The
Dollhouse” is packed with inventive sonic elements and neo-noir drama, full of
flawed characters, foiled plans and anti-fairytales.

Rideau at The Cove Inn, Westport Ontario for the first time on Friday, November
24 and he’s being joined by two members of Ottawa’s great Blues Rock
band Wicked Grin for this show www.wickedgrin.ca What a dynamite combo!
Tas’ career began after he left the U.S. Navy and teamed up with a former shipmate from Arkansas who taught him how to play “real deal” Country Blues. He then got introduced to the great Sun Records sound and later added elements of Blues Rock to his unique sound. He started performing and recording and now has 7 albums to his credit including his latest “Simmered & Stewed”.
“Raucous, rowdy, gentle, sweet, eccentric, quirky, and outright irreverent” are all words that have been used to describe Tas’ music. He also goes into schools, hospitals and community centres on a regular basis to give Blues Education Workshops. In 2014 he received the prestigious “Keeping The Blues Alive” Award from the Blues Foundation for his work. Tas is coming to us fresh from a major Blues Benefit Concert for the victims of Hurricane Maria held in New York City on November 21 where he will be sharing stage with artists like Alexis P. Suter, Vanessa Collier and Slam Allen.
Tas is bringing his drummer and harmonica player from his band The Tortured Souls with him and will be joined by Maple Blues Award winners Murray Kinsley on guitar & vocals & Leigh-Anne Stanton on bass – the two founding members of the great Ottawa Blues Rock band Wicked Grin. Wicked Grin won the Maple Blues Award for Best New Group in 2014 and have been on a tear since. Leigh-Anne won the MBA for Bass Player Of The Year in 2015. Red
Maple Blues Blues Dances
It is with great sadness that Red Maple Blues must
announce that we must cancel our 'Four Years at Fleur' party that we had
scheduled for this upcoming Wednesday, November 1 and all other dances at this
venue. The Tea House has been sold and, unfortunately, the new owner is not
interested in continuing our 'odd Wednesday' dances. We regret to announce this
as we had really been looking forward our community celebration as we know you
were.
RMB definitely plans to continue hosting dances and
events and will be in touch to inform you about the new details. We're
currently looking for a new home. Know of a venue, that you feel would be a
good fit and may be receptive? Contact us via FB message or at ottawaredmapleblues@gmail.com
In the meantime, we'd like to remind you that we're hosting the late night at the OSDS Anniversary dance and would like to see you there!
Stay tuned and thanks so much for your understanding.

into the guts of the most venerable standard. Shakura’s long-simmering career
initially moved into high gear in 2008 with a triumph at the International
Blues Challenge in Memphis, when she earned the runner-up position, competing
against more than 100 bands from more than 20 different countries.
Shakura S’Aida has consistently been thrilling audiences
with her powerful pipes for years, most recently as a guest host on CBC Radio
2’s Weekend Morning. As a veteran of the international music scene, she’s
performed both as a featured artist with musicians like Jimmy Smith, Lee Oskar
(WAR), Bettye LaVette and Keb Mo’, as well as an award winning solo artist.
This will be a formidable performance and tickets for
this show would make a perfect Christmas Gift! Give the gift of live music this
holiday season! Advance Tickets www.musicbythebaylive.com

Soulstack delivers a visceral experience; one of seasoned
musicians playing the music of their roots with authentic realism. It’s the
sound of Staples Singers-inspired southern harmony, tremolo-drenched baritone
guitar, with a late-sixties New Orleans-style rhythm section and the gurgle of
a Hammond organ driving it along with the unmistakable and distinctive voice of
Jon Knight.
It is an experience to experience Soulstack.

For those who live
south of the city, OBS member Bob Cavan notes that the National Public Radio
(NPR) radio signal at 89.5 FM in Canton NY comes in pretty strong in Manotick.
Bob recommends two shows in particular. Bob says “The Blue Note”
Tuesdays 3 pm-5 pm, and “The Radio Bob Show” Wednesdays 3 pm-5
pm are both excellent shows – blues, ‘50s & ‘60s, rock & roll,
R&B.

Re-broadcast Saturday
10 am – noon & Sunday 2-4 pm (all times EST)
It’s all about the
Blues, Jazz and its derivatives from around the globe and just around the
corner. Songs rarely heard, from the very first recordings all the way to indie
artists who consciously push the envelope to the next generation sounds of the
genre; some older releases will be spun - just because the album in old,
doesn't mean it's forgotten, thus the "On The Side" part of the
show's title.
