The 22nd edition of Virée Blues Boréale presents
The Kirby Sewell Band
Bar Le Petit Chicago, 50 Promenade du Portage, Gatineau QC
Wednesday, October 14 @ 8 pm; $20
Ottawa Blues Society members - $15 with OBS card
Our next guest has never
performed in the National Capital Region nor in the Province of Quebec though
we received lots of requests. His latest album, “Girl With A New Tattoo” has
received acclaim by critics and Blues fans from Canada to Russia, through the
United States and Germany; three songs from this album have reached the top on
many charts such as the Canadian and American Root Music Reports. From
Calgary, Alberta, a Canadian Blues Giant, physically and musically with his one
of a kind classic Soul singer voice … “Sewell stands 6 ft 6’’, (a football
player like stature) and belts out vocals that are easily ten feet
tall”. That’s The Big Boss Man, Kirby Sewell.
Often compared to Joe Cocker or Van Morrison, Kirby Sewell makes a strong impression.
Often compared to Joe Cocker or Van Morrison, Kirby Sewell makes a strong impression.
Known to break a sweat
performing, he commands the stage, sharing nuances of his own life in
unforgettable vocal performances, leaving audiences little doubt that the Blues
has spent some time with him. Backed by an incredible band, led by
producer/guitarist Neil Gunhold, who has cooked up a genre bending, sonic
union, coloured by the Rock, Country, Blues overtones of Morgan Turk (lead
guitar), along with Jim Johnston (drums) and Jae Cho (bass), who dynamically
underpin Sewell’s deeply textured, Soul filled, R&B/Rock voice.
The Kirby Sewell Band has performed on international major stages and has been played across North America, on SiriusXM, and nationally on the CBC’s Saturday Night Blues, on CKUA & Galaxy networks and on our own DAWG FM. They also performed at the San Jose Jazz Festival, at Orangeville, Ontario and at many festivals across Alberta and British Columbia. Embarking on an International tour with their new album "Girl With a New Tattoo", the red hot band seeks to hit the road with their infectious brand that indelibly marks everyone who listens.

BLUES ON THE RIDEAU 2015/16
Blues On The Rideau is a Dinner and Show Fundraiser Series that has been running at The Cove Country Inn in Westport, Ontario for the past 10 years. The shows start in September and run once a month through to May (December excluded) and feature some of the best Blues bands in Canada (and a few American ones too). It has come to be recognized as one of the premier Blues Series in Canada. Every show is a fundraiser for a different local charity. To date the Series has raised over $55,000. The goal for this season is another $5K.
The Cove Inn is located in the beautiful village of Westport on Upper Rideau Lake - about a 90 minute drive from Ottawa, 45 minutes from Kingston. All BOTR shows run from 7 to 11 pm and include a delicious full course buffet dinner. The staff at The Cove are very friendly and the venue is small, intimate and relaxed. After dinner you get to see and dance to the bands up close and personal – the way Blues is best enjoyed – all for a very reasonable price – $65 (plus tax). There are door prize giveaways at every show and 2 Grand Prizes drawn at the end of the season from all of the Comment Cards filled in by attendees over the year.
ADVANCE RESERVATIONS are required and it is wise to
book well ahead especially if you want to stay overnight. Rooms at The
Cove and nearby B&Bs and motels frequently sell out for Blues nights. Call
The Cove at 613-273-3636 or 1-888-COVEINN to reserve.
More info on the Series, including Bios, LINKS to
websites and YOU TUBES of all the artists can be found at www.BluesOnTheRideau.ca

The 24th Street Wailers
Rainbow Bistro, 76 Murray Street
Saturday, October 24 @ 9:30 pm
Experienced,
road-tested and tougher than a two by four, The 24th Street Wailers are five musicians
whose major influence is the sounds from the freewheeling period in the ‘40s
and ‘50s when the Blues gave birth to Rock and Roll in black communities in
major American cities. When showmanship mattered. When the sax player, not the
guitarist, got the girls.
“We’re just trying
to restore faith in what the Blues and Rock and Roll were meant to be.”
