DAVE ‘HURRICANE’
HOERL UPDATE
*********************************
On June 24th, 2014 Canadian
blues luminary and founding member of the popular jump-blues band The Twisters,
Dave ‘Hurricane’ Hoerl, released
his first solo recording, “Un-Twisted”.
Shortly before the official release of “Un-Twisted”, Dave suffered a massive stroke that left him
hospitalized and fighting for his life. As with many victims of stroke, the
future is uncertain. He is currently under great care in hospital and will soon
be moved to a long-term care facility.
Dave ‘Hurricane’ Hoerl is a
stalwart supporter of the blues music community who has helped put Canadian
blues music on the map. The blues community in Canada is once again coming
together to help out a friend in need.
A benefit concert is being
planned for September 14 in Vancouver at Pat's Pub (details TBA) and a PayPal account has been set up where
donations are being accepted to help cover the cost of Hoerl's care.
A Facebook page
has been set up for friends and fans to get information about Dave’s music,
news and upcoming benefits.
"I would like to take
this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for the kindness, prayers
and support shown to David and our family during this extremely difficult time.
Even though we needed our privacy these past eight weeks, it has not gone
un-noticed how much love has been shown for David. Words cannot express
adequately enough how much this has meant to us. Thank you from the
bottom of our hearts for caring so much for the man that means the world to
us. It helps more than you know." -Lynda & David Hoerl &
Family

this information.)

Rise Again: A Hurricane Can't
Hold Us Down
The Stan Rogers Folk Festival
The 2014 Stan Rogers Folk Festival, scheduled for
July 4-6, was cancelled at the last minute, faced with hurricane winds and
rain. At the time of the decision, weather experts predicted the hurricane
would bring 100 km/h winds and torrential rains to Nova Scotia. The staff,
board of directors and volunteer leaders made this tough decision in the
interest of public safety. A camping-based festival simply cannot safely
operate in a hurricane or tropical storm. On Saturday, July 5, the storm
had made landfall in Nova Scotia and 50,000 homes had lost
power. The storm went on to bring rain and 70 km/h+ winds to Canso and
widespread damage to Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island.
This was to be the 18th annual festival. It’s a major challenge for the organization to face and manage, but we are committed to working through this and staging the biggest and best festival ever in 2015. There has been an amazing show of support and endorsement for this decision by our ticket buyers, sponsors, funders, artists and dozens of festivals and organizations across the country. Many have asked how they can make donations to help with the cancellation costs. We've created a crowd funding campaign https://fundrazr.com/campaigns/aoL47 to provide a vehicle for donations to be made. Donations will be used to fund the $70 k+ in cancellation costs we are facing. [The campaign ends September 30, 2014 and has raised just under $27,000 to date.]

Steve Hill
Neat Coffee Shop,
Burnstown ON
Thursday, August 7 @ 8 pm; tickets $25
In 2012, Hill
released “Solo Recordings Volume 1″, probably his rawest album to date, and it
was chosen “Best Self-Produced CD” at the International Blues Challenge. He followed up with “Solo Recordings Volume
1.5” and, just this spring, “Solo Recordings, Volume 2”. “The
singer-songwriter-composer explores new sounds, all the while paying homage to
his blues roots. This album infuses the blues with a good dose of rock, folk
and country. In addition to singing and playing the harmonica and guitar, Steve
performs standing up, his feet playing bass drum, snare drum, hi-hats and any
other percussion he can reach. “Solo Recordings Volume 2” includes original
songs, as well as covers of two blues classics from the 1950s.”

Bisson Rhythm & Blues Experience
D’Arcy
McGee’s, 44 Sparks Street
Thursday
& Friday, August 7-8 @ 9 pm
A 5 piece classic Rhythm & Blues, Motown, Funk,
Rock, Swing & Soul Band with horns. With the release of his 5th
studio album “Bad Scene” in August 2013, it is clear to hear that Andre has
stayed true to his influences. Combining the driving bass lines of Motown, the
raw vocal power of Stax, and the electrifying horn sections of B.B. King, this
album is sure to bring blues fans to their feet. Along with 10 new originals,
Andre also pays tribute to one of the greats with his version of Jimi Hendrix's
‘Remember’. This album was nominated for Blues Album of the Year for the
Hamilton Music Awards and Jesse O'Brien Won the Award for Keyboard Player of
the Year for his work on it.

Ray Bonneville
Irene’s Pub, 885 Bank Street
Wednesday, August 13 @ 8 pm
“On
his 4th Red House Records album, “Easy Gone”, Ray Bonneville’s …
guitar work shimmers like stars emerging at dusk. His voice carries the rich,
natural timbre of time, though underneath that pearl-like smoothness, one hears
its gritty core. His harmonica rhythms add even more texture to his sound. ….
“The whole songwriting thing, to me, is mysterious, and I want to keep it that
way,” Bonneville says. Ultimately, what matters is knowing how to translate the
mystery into music and that, he understands perfectly.”
**********
Jordan John in Concert
Black Sheep Inn, Wakefield QC
Friday, August 15 @ 8:30 pm
“To say that vocal sensation Jordan John is a more powerful
and polished lead vocalist and multi-instrumentalist than many players twice
his age would tell just a fraction of the story. He has already compiled a
longer list of credits, and displays more assuredness and maturity, than many
performers twice his age. Adept on drums, keyboards, guitar and bass, he
distills the blues, soul and rhythm & blues into a sound that is both
solidly traditional and a bold departure from the electronically generated
music that has saturated the pop charts in recent years. ….
Delivering
a refined essence of traditional based Blues, Soul & Rhythm ‘n’ Blues, this
musical dynamo adds a breath of fresh air to the contemporary music landscape!”

HEARTS ON THE PIANO
An Evening with Megan Jerome (Ottawa) and Mike Evin (Toronto)
GigSpace Performance Studio, 953
Gladstone Avenue
Saturday, August 16 @ 7:300 pm; tickets $20
Megan Jerome and Mike Evin
are singer-songwriters who build their words and music around the piano. They
are coming together around GigSpace's grand piano for an intimate evening of
storytelling and hooks. If you dig honest, humorous and hopeful piano songs
that will stick in your head and keep you buzzing until the morning, then you
will not want to miss this "one night only" performance.
www.gigspaceottawa.com
www.gigspaceottawa.com
Like Earth Wind and Fire?
You might love Megan Jerome! Known for her eclectic and soulful piano songs,
Megan's music and performances are arty, funny, sparse and sexy. Following
family singsongs and formal classical and jazz piano training, Megan has
self-produced four albums that have delighted critics and audiences alike,
topping CBC and community radio station charts nationwide. Megan recently won
the Galaxie Rising Star Award.
So what
does this have to do with Earth Wind and Fire?
Two years ago, when Bruce Hornsby played
the Ottawa Folkfest, Megan was first on the bill. She played the concert
that won her the Rising Star Award. And who watched her show from the wings,
smiling, clapping and laughing along? Who told her he loved her music?? None
other than Sonny Emory, drummer of Earth Wind and Fire, who was touring with
Bruce!
Mike Evin's brand of piano
pop is soulful, catchy and disarming. Mike often gets mistaken for a Creeggan
brother. Though the physical similarities between him and Jim Creeggan
(Barenaked Ladies bassist) are considerable, it's truly a sense of joy and
musicianship that connects Mike with Jim and his brother Andy (an original BNL
member).
The Brothers Creeggan produced Mike's second album back in 2005. Mike continues to collaborate with The Creeggans and Barenaked Ladies, who invited him twice to perform on their Ships & Dip cruise. He’s also been lucky to write and perform with one of his idols, Ron Sexsmith. Other artists he’s shared the stage with include Sarah Harmer, Amy Millan and Dan Mangan. Since 2001, Mike’s released five albums, steadily grown a loyal grassroots following and has been played regularly on CBC. Mike's forthcoming album (date TBA) is produced by Howie Beck (Feist, Walk Off The Earth).
