SPECIAL EVENTS THIS
WEEK
****************************************
A VERY SPECIAL event
being held in Toronto:
Amos Garrett Benefit
Presented by Richard
Flohil
Featuring Kevin Breit,
Russell deCarle, Luke Doucet, Ariana Gillis, Michael Laderoute, Ben Waters, Chris
Whiteley & Diana Braithwaite
Hugh’s Room,
Toronto ON
Wednesday, August
14 @ 8:30 pm
Tickets $25 (advance), $27.50 at
the door
A distinguished and varied group of
Toronto area musicians are coming together to perform at a benefit concert at
Hugh’s Room on Wed. August 14. They are volunteering their talent to raise
money to help guitarist Amos Garrett rebuild his home in High River Alberta,
severely damaged by the recent flooding.
Garrett, now 71, lost at least two
guitars and many other personal possessions (including his fishing gear) when
seven feet of water cascaded into the basement of his long-time home in High
River. Like other affected Alberta residents, his insurance does not cover
flood damage; clean-up and repairs will reach a six-figure total.
Hugh’s Room has hosted Garrett on a
number of occasions in the acoustic music venue’s thirteen years. Garrett, who
has several albums of his own on the Edmonton-based Stony Plain label
(including the newly-released JazzBlues
record) is still remembered for his ground-breaking solo on Maria Muldaur’s 70s
hit, “Midnight at the Oasis”, but he has recorded with literally hundreds of
other artists since.
Taking part in the
benefit are:
Kevin Breit — Session
and touring guitarist with numerous international artists, including Cassandra
Wilson, Norah Jones, Hugh Laurie, k.d. lang and dozens more, and leader of his
own group, The Sisters Euclid. His recent recordings have included three albums
of duets with Harry Manx.
Russell deCarle — Lead
singer, and major songwriter, of the award-winning country group Prairie
Oyster, Russell has a growing solo career, accompanied by guitarist Steve
Briggs and accordion player Dennis Keldie, who will perform with him at the
benefit.
Luke Doucet — One
half of the duo Whitehorse (which recently sold out Massey Hall), he’s a
spectacular player and artistic director of the annual Toronto guitar festival.
Sleepwalk — named after the song that has become, in recent years, Amos Garrett’s
signature tune.
Ariana Gillis —
Accompanied by David Gillis (guitar), Russ Boswell (bass) and Ben Rollo
(drums), she’s a 22-year-old singer-songwriter who brings a fresh approach to
her own unusual material, as well as cover songs from the likes of Dylan, Tom
Waits, and The Killers. About to move to New York for a year-long residency.
Michael Laderoute — A
singer-songwriter steeped in the Texas music of Guy Clark, Townes Van Zandt and
Ray Wylie Hubbard, Laderoute spends half the year living in Mexico, the other
half singing, playing and making friends at the Cameron House, The Tranzac and
other local music venues.
Ben Waters — A
powerful boogie woogie/barrelhouse piano player from the UK, Waters is touring
Canada, and coincidentally is in Toronto for this event. His latest CD, Boogie 4 Stu, includes
appearances from Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, P.J. Harvey (his cousin), Charlie
Watts, Jools Holland and Ronnie Wood.
Chris Whiteley and Diana Braithwaite —
Multi-instrumentalist Chris and his partner Diana tour consistently throughout
North America and Europe. Based in Toronto, they’ve won multiple Maple Blues
Awards; Chris has appeared on more than 200 records, in addition his own
projects with his partner.
People
who cannot come to the benefit are invited to contribute in the following way:

Ross Neilsen Band
Irene’s Pub, 885 Bank Street
Friday, August 23 @ 9:30 pm
Blues-rawk road warrior Ross Neilsen and his band
bring “Resurrection” to Irene’s in
Ottawa. Neilsen’s latest studio CD was recorded in Maurice, Louisiana at
Dockside Studios, produced by New Orleans’ favourite son, Anders Osborne and
engineered by Grammy award-winning studio whiz, Warren Riker. This recording was
funded in part by the Music Industry Development grant in New Brunswick as well
as direct-to-fan funding site Pledge Music.
Neilsen’s journey to “Resurrection” was an epic one. Detouring to Macon, Georgia to
visit the Allman Brothers Museum, The
Big House, Neilsen gained inspiration for recording after being one of
the few people on earth to be allowed to play Duane Allman’s 1957 Gold Top Les
Paul. This is the legendary guitar used on the first two Allman Brothers albums
as well as Eric Clapton’s “Layla” album.
“Resurrection”
contains ten original songs, each one a unique sonic assault that draws
from Neilsen’s full palate of influences. From the dueling southern rock guitar
lines between Neilsen and Osborne on “Daddy Taught Me” (Neilsen’s tribute to
his late father), the poppy ear-worm hook in the rocker “Need You More”, ZZ
Top-esque guitar work in “Walk on By”, or the closing ten minute opus of
“Juanita” that conjures up the heavy drone of Crazy Horse, “Resurrection” explores bold new
ground taking the band into dangerously beautiful new territory. The song
topics are snap shots into the life the people Neilsen meets and the places he
visits as he tours the great nation he so proudly calls home.
After the demise of The Sufferin’ Bastards in
December 2011, Ross Neilsen has spent much of the last year rebuilding his
musical foundation with a new trio, Ross
Neilsen Band. Any doubt as to the impact of his return has been
shattered with this latest recording. The old school, in-your-face guitar
playing coupled with a thunderous, tight rhythm section has been Neilsen’s
trademark for years, blurring the lines between pop, blues and rock. With “Resurrection”, Neilsen has returned
with an arsenal of mature, timeless material and a fire burning hotter than
ever to take this new, exciting music to the place it matters most – The
People.

Irene Torres & the Sugar Devils
Irene’s Pub, 885 Bank Street
Saturday, August 31 @ 9:30 pm
Irene Torres & The Sugar Devils' musical diversity,
talent and raw energy, makes them truly unique. Drawing from all genres, they
mesh the past & present to create a new generation of deep rooted music
with a New Orleans flavour.
Shortly after winning the 2012 TBS award, they were
nominated for a Sigy Born award and selected for a Toronto Independent Music
Award. They have received rave reviews as well as critics picks for their self
titled album which has ranked #1 on some college radio stations, #4 on
reverbnation, top 5, top 30 and top 100 on Canadian and international music
charts.
Sultry Peruvian born Irene Torres is recognized as the
singer for Sol Azul, Santerias & The Sugar Devils. Her voice and lyrics can
be heard on worldwide radio stations, radio commercials, television,
soundtracks and fashion shows. She is a quadruple threat with a back ground in
dancing, acting, broadcasting and martial arts. Her talents stretch beyond
lyrics and singing, when it's time to perform she transforms you back or
forward in time.
The Sugar Devils are comprised of experienced musicians from
all genres, including sugar-coated Drew Austin, renowned drummer,
percussionist, and clinician who has worked with award winning artists
internationally. Drew's philosophy is that music is medicine, he uses drumming
as vibration therapy through The Sugar Devils musical diversity. Devilish
Guitarist, educator and musical director Josh ‘Yoshi’ Piche is a Brandon
University Music Alumni who plays any instrument with strings. Producer and
Multi instrumentalist Rob Christian is nothing short of brilliant on flute, sax,
keys, and vocals, but don't let that fool you, he brings the fire. Bassist and
arranger Jesse Boxer-Meyrowitz is a Humber College music alumni who is a much
heavier contender on stage than in the ring, his playing is sweet as hell.
