INTERNATIONAL BLUES
CHALLENGE
in
MEMPHIS TN
******************************************************
Last week I was in Memphis TN at the International Blues
Challenge. I planned to send out Ottawa Blues This Week but with travel delays
and then the inevitable blues-overload of shows, there wasn’t time to put it
together. Travel delays on the return trip contributed to this week’s tardiness.
But I’m sure you’re interested in what happened in
Memphis, so here’s the scoop:
Of the 10 Canadian bands entered, three – The MacKenzie
Blues Band representing the Bruce County Blues Society, Shrimp Daddy & the
Sharpshooters representing the Toronto Blues Society and Poppa Dawg
representing the White Rock Blues Society – made the semi-finals. Unfortunately
no Canadian bands advanced to the finals.
In the Solo/Duo, of the five Canadian solo artists entered, four made
the semi-finals – Graham Guest from the Edmonton Blues Society, Brendan J
Stephens from the Grand River Blues Society, Thom Swift from the Harvest Jazz
& Blues Festival and Suzie Vinnick from the Toronto Blues Society. Graham
and Suzie advanced to the finals and their performances were top-notch, but
neither finished in the Top 2.
Montreal Blues Society’s submission of Steve Hill’s “Solo
Recordings Volume 1” was chosen as the Best Self-Produced CD.
The
Ottawa and Montreal Blues Societies again presented the Great Canadian Polar
Bear Blues Showcase, on Thursday, January 31, from 11:30 am to 4 pm, at the
Kooky Canuck Restaurant (owner Shawn is from Canada). The showcase featured
nine of the ten bands and all five solo acts sponsored by Canadian affiliates
of the Blues Foundation. Nearly 200 gift bags (and a complimentary
Canadian ‘beverage’) were given out to our guests. Judith Costello, Political
& Economic Relations Officer, Consulate General of Canada in Atlanta,
Georgia, was in attendance to enjoy the festivities. The Consulate
General is one of many co-sponsors of the events. Other co-sponsors
included the Kooky Canuck, Government of Canada, Budweiser of Memphis, Bruce
County Blues Society, Edmonton Blues Society, Grand River Blues Society, Great
Lakes Blues Society, Harvest Jazz & Blues Festival, Loyal Blues Fellowship,
Montreal Blues Society, Ottawa Blues Society, Thunder Bay Blues Society,
Toronto Blues Society, White Rock Blues Society, 101.9 DAWG FM in Ottawa,Bill
Wax, Sirius XM Radio B.B. King’s Bluesville, Irene’s Pub & Restaurant,
NorthernBlues Music, Electro-Fi Records, Stony Plain Records, Tribute Audio
Designs, along with many organizations and musicians who contributed Canadian
‘swag’ for the gift bags.

Having fine-tuned their craft on their many road trips to the Mississippi delta, the band's music is inspired by the rhythmic grooves you'll hear in any urban or country juke joint on a hot Saturday night. You'd better bring your dancing shoes as you will want to let your hair down and party to the hypnotic sound of the Myers Brothers Band.

Anthony Gomes
Rainbow, 76 Murray
Street
Friday, February 15
Singer-guitarist
Anthony Gomes lives by that credo of truth as an artist, constantly challenging
himself to expand his explorations of heart and sound. The release of his
latest album “Up 2 Zero” represents a full-circle return to his love of high
energy, guitar-driven blues rock. The new collection of songs combines straight
ahead power blues compositions with tracks that incorporate soul-injected
melodic moments. “This album is the most honest representation of who I am,”
Anthony says. “When I started playing, all I wanted to do was dig deep and play
the blues. I wanted to capture that reckless blues power of my earlier
catalogue on this recording. I also have a love of melody that you can hear in
soul and gospel music, and this CD has those elements as well. Even on the
songs that stray away from the traditional 12-bar blues format, you still can
hear plenty of B.B. King or Buddy Guy in there.”
“Up
2 Zero” was included on many ‘Best of 2012’ lists and Anthony Gomes was
nominated for Electric Act of the Year at this year’s Maple Blues Awards. He’ll be at the Rainbow on Friday, February
15.

Swamperella
Irene’s Pub, 885 Bank
Street
Saturday, February 23
@ 9:30 pm
After 15 years of partying up crowds at the
Gladstone Hotel, Swamperella has deserved its acclaim as a guaranteed good
time. The eclectic demographic that is attracted to Swamperella’s monthly
events attests to this acclaim. If you don’t think you want to dance, just
listening to the band and watching the crowd is almost as fun. But, dancing or
not, you probably won’t be standing still - the Swamperella sound won’t let you
and the scene will keep you smiling.
The original mandate of Swamperella, ‘to honour the
Cajun music tradition’, has never been compromised. The integrity of the
traditional form and sentiment has always been maintained even as originals and
Zydeco began seeping into the Swamperella repertoire. But there’s nothing
stodgy about this band. The old time flavour stirred up in a brand new pot
makes for a fabulous and rich musical experience and the Swamp-stew just keeps
getting yummier.
Swamperella
is back in the studio, recording our 4th CD featuring current cajun faves and
some rockin' home brewed zydeco.

Known
as Canada's Top Touring Bluesman, JW-Jones has performed in 19 countries, 4
continents, and has released 7 critically acclaimed CDs, including the new
'Seventh Hour'. Guitar World Magazine
featured a CD called ‘Guitar Masters Vol. 2’ that put Jones alongside guitar
stars B.B. King, Jimmy Page, and Carlos Santana among others, which led him to
an endorsement deal with Gibson guitars.
His last few CDs have hit #1 on B.B. King's Bluesville on Sirius-XM
Radio in the U.S.A., and Jones continues to win over audiences across the globe
with his high-energy live performances.
Rod
Williams, affectionately as Reverend Rod, is a master Harp player and powerful
vocalist. Rod has been performing at local venues since the early ‘90s and has
played alongside the who’s-who of local and international talent. He brings a
passion for the music that is contagious and undeniable! A member of many local
bands, including The Soul Shakers, Broadcast Blues Band, Lil' Al's Combo, more
recently, King Rattler, Wicked Grin, and an acoustic duo, with Ottawa's own

For
the last couple of years, J-Dub and Rod Williams have been enjoying the
laid-back and intimate vibe of playing together, stripped down, cool blues and

Manitoba Hal
Irene’s Pub, 885 Bank
Street
Wednesday, February
27 @ 9:30 pm
Manitoba Hal is an accomplished guitarist and
songwriter, but he is best known for his ukulele chops. Hal proves that the uke
can be small but mighty as he pulls out powerful blues riffs and melodies.
Hal uses a looping technology to produce a one-man-band experience, adding subtle but important background beats to his extraordinary ukulele strumming and riffing. Many wouldn’t associate the ukulele as a blues instrument, but Hal takes out all the hula, leaving only room for deep blues to prevail. After his grandfather gave him a uke in ’95, Hal found that it transferred easily from his blues guitar style, complimenting his combination of finger picking and strumming, and gospel vocal style.

John Hammond
Victoria Concert
Hall, Cobourg ON
Thursday, March 21 @
8 pm
With a career that spans over three decades, John
Hammond is one of a handful of white blues musicians who was on the scene
at the beginning of the first blues renaissance of the mid-'60s. That
revival, brought on by renewed interest in folk music around the
U.S., brought about career boosts for many of the great classic blues
players, including Mississippi John Hurt, Rev. Gary Davis, and Skip James.
Some critics have described Hammond as a white Robert Johnson, and Hammond
does justice to classic blues by combining powerful guitar and harmonica
playing with expressive vocals and a dignified stage presence.
Although he's a multi-dimensional artist, one
thing Hammond has never professed to be is a songwriter. In the early
years of his career, it was more important to him that he bring the art form to
a wider audience by performing classic - in some cases forgotten - songs.
Now, more than 30 years later, Hammond continues to do this, touring all over
the U.S., Canada, and Europe from his base in northern New Jersey. Whether it's
with a band or by himself, Hammond can do it all. Seeing him perform live, one
still gets the sense that some of the best is still to come from this energetic
bluesman.
