Background:
What started as a ‘one off Christmas songwriting project by a number of local singer/songwriters turned into a Christmas tradition for many! First it was a way to inspire songwriting, then it was a CD, with a CD release concert where proceeds went to the Ottawa Food Bank. Members of the songwriting community wanted to give back. Now into its 10th year, and 3 CDs later, we are proud to bring once again, a stellar cast to the NAC Fourth Stage.

The 16th edition of Virée Blues Boréale presents
Rocket Rached & the Fat City 8
Le Petit Chicago, 50 Promenade du Portage (Old Hull sector)
Wednesday, November 29 @ 8 pm
Although we, at Virée Blues Boréale like large Blues bands very much, the costs involved in such productions don’t allow us to feature many nor often. So we are very proud to feature a large, if not the largest Blues ensemble to have performed at Virée Blues Boréale. This band, a jewel of our region that brings together many of the best Blues musicians around is Rocket Rached & The Fat City 8.
Performing on the Canadian Blues circuit for over 17 years, Rocket Rached & The Fat City 8 started quite differently! We are all used to the stories of young musicians who pick up a group and work up their way to success through hard persistent work ... but Rocket Rached & The Fat City 8 start up does not at all resemble that! Indeed, their story starts with two very talented and fearless young musicians who, wishing to step onto the National Capital Blues scene, have gone after a contract ... before building a group! One of the two big dreamers was working in the biz of promoting the local musicians through the well known Arts Rag, The Xpress; he convinced his boss to hire them for the celebration of the paper’s 2nd anniversary. From then, they only had to get the musicians!
Within a couple of weeks the band was formed and performances were planned but they felt they needed a gig as a warm up before the anniversary show. They found another contract and started performing ... before their 1st official show! That’s the birth of Rocket Rached & The Fat City 4. Oh yeah, 4 - that was the number of musicians in the group ... but was never to be used again! That first night, whatever could go wrong did. The Mighty Popo, the group’s original guitarist, could not make the gig; he called a half hour before showtime to say he was too sick to make it, but not to worry he lined up a sub. Steve Lauder played the first gig. And they ended up with 2 horns joining in that night and it was destined to never be The Fat City 4 again.
A few weeks later, at the concert, the group could have been called Rocket Rached & The Fat City 16 … indeed there were some 16 performers on stage, with a full brass section as well as a string section who accompanied the original group. Since that time the band was always known as Rocket Rached & The Fat City 8 but the actual number always varied for the group is regularly joined by “honourary members” like The Mighty Popo, Tony D, Scott Doubt or Greggor Snedden on guitar, Steve Marriner on harmonica, Andrea Karam for some lyrics, Matt Sobb on drums or Steve Trecarten on tenor sax. If you’d like to know who are these guys who seem ready to ram every possible obstacle to reach their goals, below is a short resume for each of the 8 members of Rocket Rached & The Fat City 8:
Jed "Rocket" Rached, lyrics, tuba and trombone, is a classic Blues shouter who harkens back to the days of Jimmy Witherspoon and Big Joe Turner. His warm voice leaves no one unmoved and The "Rocket" is a frontman extraordinaire without equal, who erupts with energy and once on stage it’s both infectious and entertaining.
Rick Rangno, trumpet. This man is one of Ottawa's most in-demand trumpet players. Rick was born in the ‘Peg and spent his youth out West. He graduated from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver with a Bachelor of Music degree before joining the Canadian Forces Show Band.
Terry Owen, has been playing for over 25 years on tenor sax. Terry was proud to play with Queen Bee & The Blue Hornet Band when they were nominated for a Grammy Award. He has also had the pleasure of playing with a diverse range of artists including the legendary Dutch Mason, Bo Diddley and, most recently with Percy Sledge. He is also fortunate to have graced the stage with Ottawa’s grandfather of the Blues Larry “The Bird” Mootham,
Sandy Gordon on alto sax is another great musician from Ottawa’s bustling Blues scene; he plays the alto sax with abandon and this has made him one of the best sax players in the business.
Frank "The Professor" Scanga masterfully plays baritone sax and harmonica. The Professor started playing harmonica more than 20 years ago, sitting in with friends' bands. He recorded a CD with Mike Elliot and started Fine Fat Daddy with Roxanne Potvin. 6 or 7 years ago, the Professor decided to learn the baritone sax and ended up recording 4 CDs with JW-Jones.
George Prendergast on bass guitar. The encyclopedia of Blues music, Ampeg’s & Fender P’s, that’s what makes up this bassman. One of the best and steadfast players who makes Fat City’s rhythm section the powerhouse that it is. You can ask him any musical question in the Blues.
Buck Tingley on guitar ain't no mama's boy. Buck hails from the woods of Turtle Creek NB, where liquor and guns often go hand and [sic] hand. His noticed presence onto the East Coast music scene is now pursued into the Blues world of the Nation’s Capital where his raw and efficient guitar playing has made a mark.
Bill Brennan has been the drummer with Downchild & Jumpin’ Johnny Sansone. Bill is the originator of the patented Bill Brennan shuffle. From New Orleans right on thru he’s played all over.
Steve Ridgely, keyboards and piano player emeritus. In his 35 year piano player career, he contributed to recordings and wrote for bands in a wide range of styles from country to Blues, to RnB, rock and swing among others. His joining in the spectacular Fat City 8 brought in new horizons allowing his creativity to progress further.
This show is not to be missed … Rocket Rached & The Fat City 8 ... or 9 ... or 10 ... or 11!

Robbie Antone &
the Blues Machine
Rainbow, 76 Murray
Street
Wednesday, December 5
Best
Blues/R&B 2012 Jack Richardson Music Award winners, 2012 Memphis
International Blues Challenge Semi-Finalists and 2011 London Free Press Local
Album of the Year winners, Robbie Antone’s Blues Machine gets its sound from
the many influences of lead singer and harmonica ace Robbie Antone. Robbie
Antone “Wolf Clan,” hails from the Oneida Nation of the Thames First Nation,
near London ON.
As
a young adult, inspired from his collection of Chess and Sun records, Antone
set out on his quest to tame the harmonica and develop his own distinctive tone
and sound. Years later, after 3 CDs consisting of his own original material as
well as Chicago and Delta style Blues, Antone brings his experience to the
studio to produce his latest CD “Red Road Blues”, inspired by his Cultural
Heritage and his life experiences. Guitarist Richard Joyce from Toronto,
Ontario puts down a strong rhythm and superior quality tone, adding to the
Blues Machine’s amazing sound. The Blues Machine’s strong rhythm section
consists of Juno Award winning drummer and Trinidad native, Hayden Vialva, a
long time friend and ally of Antone’s and Rob Valente from London ON, whose
impressive bass playing rounds off the smooth and soulful music of Robbie
Antone’s Blues Machine. The Blues Machine’s music is best described as
Blues/Rock with influences of Soul and R&B. Robbie Antone’s Blues Machine
delivers a diverse blend of musical styles at their live shows, creating a positive
energy that embraces the crowd.

The Weber Brothers
Elmdale House Tavern,
Saturday, December 8
@ 9:30 pm;
$10
There are bands for which rock and roll is a
lifestyle, and then there are bands for which it is life. At an age when most boys are still dreaming
of rock stardom, the Weber Brothers were too busy working to care. Four sets a
night, four nights a week, the brothers perfected their hard-won sound in
Maryland dive bars they were often too young to frequent. Inspired by their
intense love of Scorcese’s classic concert film “The Last Waltz,” Ryan and Sam
sent off a self-recorded demo tape to the legendary Ronnie Hawkins, the elder
statesman of rock whose former protégés (Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko, et al.)
went on to reshape the music history as The Band. Duly impressed by the pair's
immense raw talent, Hawkins promptly invited them to audition for his storied
backing band, The Hawks.
One quick decision and one long van ride later,
they arrived at Hawkins’ rural Ontario home, and after surviving the intense
musical apprenticeship of his fabled “Rock ‘n’ Roll Bootcamp,” they were in:
full-blooded Hawks. Ten years and six self-released albums later, the Webers
have spread their wings, shared the stage with icons like Garth Hudson, Levon
Helm, Leon Russell, Derek Trucks and Kris Kristofferson, and toured extensively
throughout the US, Canada, and Europe.

and reissued blues and rhythm and blues tracks on wax”, alternating with “live
blues and R&B for a Sunday night” in the last half hour of the show. On the
last Sunday of every month, the show goes “down in the delta” for a selection
of acoustic blues tracks in the final half hour of the program.
