MUSIC BY THE BAY LIVE
AJAX, UXBRIDGE, PORT PERRY
****************************
Alastair Greene
St. Francis Centre; 78 Church Street South, Ajax
Saturday, April 27; 8-11:30 pm; $50 advance plus $4 charge & HST

Alastair Greene’s musical journey has been anything but traditional. His combination of Blues, Southern Rock, and Jam Band sensibilities has been thrilling audiences for nearly two decades. With recent performances at the Chicago Blues Festival and the Big Blues Bender in Las Vegas as well as a recent tour filling in on guitar with Starship featuring Mickey Thomas, and many guest appearances with such luminaries as Eric Burdon, Walter Trout, Coco Montoya, Savoy Brown, John Nemeth, and Debbie Davies, it’s crystal clear … Alastair Greene’s star is on the rise.
Alastair recently plunged headfirst into a full-time solo career, stepping down after 7 years touring the world as the guitarist for Rock legend, Alan Parsons. Alastair is philosophical about his time playing with Parsons, saying, “I’ll always be grateful for the opportunity Alan gave me to handle guitar and vocal duties in his band. It was an honor to play the music created by the Alan Parsons Project to Alan’s fans around the world. After 7 years, the time has come for me to truly pursue my own musical dream.”

Music By the Bay Live presents
Mike Zito
St. Francis Centre; 78 Church Street South, Ajax
Saturday, May 11; 8-11:30 pm; $55 advance plus $4 charge & HST

There may not be a more honest bluesman than Mike Zito, whose 15th album ‘First Class Life’ comes out May 11 on RUF Records. The rocking yet poignant title track explores his journey from addiction to sobriety and then musical recognition; he is a two-time 2017 Blues Music Award nominee. Zito’s star has been on the rise of late both solo and as a member of the Royal Southern Brotherhood, with bandmates Cyril Neville, Devon Allman, Charlie Wooton and Yonrico Scott.

In addition to the press and Blues Music Award love, Zito has earned from fellow artists. Anders Osborne says, "I love Mike Zito! He's got that rare kinda voice that resonates in your soul. All his hardship, life experiences and kind heart oozes out of every note his sings. His guitar playing dances delicately between a contemporary blues virtuoso and an old fashion soul man. Mike continues to impress me with his straightforward and honest songwriting. His joy and grace shine through every record he makes."

JW-Jones
Neat Coffee Shop, Burnstown ON
Saturday, April 20 @ 8 pm; $35

The improv magic you hear on JW-Jones’ 10th album, “Live”, is the spark that has awakened new sonic frontiers for the veteran Maple Blues Award-winning Ottawa bluesman.
As he continues to evolve as one of Canada’s most versatile bluesmen, with one foot in the terra firma of the traditional blues espoused by the likes of Howlin’ Wolf sideman Hubert Sumlin and harmonica legend Charlie Musselwhite (who both guested on Jones’ memorable Midnight Memphis Sun, recorded at the historic Sun Studio) and blues contemporaries Robert Cray, for whom the JW-Jones band has occasionally opened, he continues to challenge and raise his standards through his recordings and the 130 dates on average yearly that he clocks in on the road.
An additional highlight is the inclusion of the JW-Jones showstopper – the 17-song medley that rifles through snippets of classic guitar riffs backed by the energetic support of 2018 Maple Blues Award Bassist of the Year Laura Greenberg and the inimitable Will Laurin on drums. “It’s been a staple of our live show for years,” says Jones. “People have been asking us to record it forever, so now we’ve finally captured it for everyone to enjoy!”
And everyone will enjoy “Live”, an album for the ages that captures the JW-Jones lightning in a bottle.

“It’s A Date Night”
Garrett Mason with special guest poet J.G. Lutes
Irene’s Pub, 885 Bank Street
Sunday, June 9 @ 3 pm; $10

One of Canada’s finest players, Garrett Mason was raised in Truro, Nova Scotia by his mother Pam, and father, veteran Canadian bluesman Dutch Mason. Dutch stopped playing
guitar before Garrett was born. Although he was not able to teach his son to play, he certainly taught Garrett the structure of the blues and influenced Garrett’s resulting sound. Surrounded by his father’s peers, Garrett had the benefit of hearing and learning from a wide variety of musical talent.

Joining Garrett is poet friend J.G.Lutes, making each night of the tour a time for both music and ideas. The tour was born from a chance invite Lutes accepted to read poems at a music festival last fall where J.G. was recorded reading his original work. “I shared a video with Garrett of me reading poems at the North Along The Shore Festival, in Avondale, NS. He liked it and said I should open for him. I suggested we do a tour together.” The result is fourteen dates throughout Eastern Canada.

“We’re both from small towns in Nova Scotia and I think that makes for a rural honesty in our work,” Lutes says. “I’m so proud to share a little bit of the stage with Garrett because he’s really an unbelievable musical force. If you haven’t seen him perform, and if you are intrigued by spoken word, then come out and hear a special collaboration.”

Garrett Mason and J.G.Lutes find purpose in creating art. They’re taking it on the road to share with part of the country. Come hear ideas; some new, some old.

David Gogo
Neat Coffee Shop, Burnstown ON
Friday, June 21 @ 8 pm; $35

With the release of his 15th album “17 Vultures”, bluesman David Gogo continues his blues rock crusade by pushing himself forward, yet again. Not that looking back on his career is a bad thing. He has performed on stage with the likes of BB King, Johnny Winter, Albert Collins, Bo Diddley, and Otis Rush. He has been chosen to open shows for ZZ Top, George Thorogood, The Tragically Hip, Little Feat, Jimmie Vaughan, Robert Cray, Robin Trower and Wishbone Ash. His songs are featured in films and television and have been covered by a variety of artists, most notably Buddy Guy.

Never one to be pigeonholed into a strict blues category, this may be his most diverse release to date. Although initially known for his ability to rip it up on lead guitar with his electric performances, Gogo has also built up a solid reputation over the last decade as an acoustic performer with his solo shows that feature his vintage National steel guitar chops, as well as his entertaining stories from the road. Usually he keeps these two sides of his abilities separate, but he features both on the new album … [but] the collection of songs ranges from traditional blues to very heavy contemporary influences. Along with five new original songs by Gogo, the choice of cover songs are an interesting variety with cuts by The Beatles, Barbecue Bob, Doug And The Slugs, and Bob Dylan! Overall the album is an entertaining and diverse listen, and gives Gogo another strong batch of material to add to his many live performances!

Colin James
“Miles To Go” Tour
Grand Theatre, 218 Princess Street, Kingston ON
Wednesday, April 10 @ 7:30 pm; tickets $64.64 + HST & handling

With his 19th album, “Miles to Go”, Colin James is getting back to the blues. Wait a minute, you ask: hasn’t Colin James always played the blues? Well, yes, but back when he was signed to his first record deal in 1988, his producer—who’d worked with Ray Charles and Derek and the Dominoes—explicitly told him not to play any blues, because the label expected a pop hit. When James later made one of the biggest albums of his career—1993’s “Colin James and the Little Big Band”, released years before the so-called “swing revival”—his label hated it, as did critics and many fans before it went on to go triple platinum in Canada. Then there was the acoustic blues album “National Steel” in 1997, made with Colin Linden, which was the first time James made a full-on blues album, which landed him on folk festival bills alongside the likes of John Prine and John Hiatt. It was an explicit embrace of the blues James had loved since the Regina-born guitarist was 16 years old and was blown away by James Cotton at the Winnipeg Folk Festival. A song that Cotton played that night, “One More Mile,” became the title track to the new album: bookending it in electric and acoustic versions.
It wasn’t until 2016’s “Blue Highways” that James found himself on a blues chart: the album spent 10 weeks at No. 1 on the Roots Music Report’s Blues Chart. It also landed him one of his biggest hits: “Riding in the Moonlight,” a Willie Dixon song that James once covered when busking in the streets and subways of Toronto and Montreal, landed on a Spotify playlist and garnered millions of streams.
When James set out to make “Blue Highways”, an album of blues covers recorded with his touring band, he always intended it to be the first of two installments. Now we have “Miles to Go”, in which James records nine new covers of his favourite artists (Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, Blind Willie Johnson, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Little Willie John, Robert Johnson, etc.) and adds two originals, ‘I Will Remain’ and ‘40 Light Years’. “Blues has always been a pass-it-forward kind of thing,” says James.
“It’s also surprisingly hard to write. You have to be careful how modern you get in your phrasing. Certain writers can write a song that sounds like it was done 40 years ago, but it’s deceptively hard.”
To be a blues musician is to always have a dialogue with the past. As with much blues music, it’s the performances on the original versions rather than the actual song that drew James to them. That said, what could he possibly bring to them in 2018? “You bring what you can,” he says. “If I feel like I’ve brought enough, then I put it out. I knocked a bunch of songs off this record when I realized that I can’t bring anything to them that isn’t there already. All my life I’ve tried to bring vitality to older songs. Hopefully, my dedication to it is what floats it over the mark. That’s a subjective thing; some people will always prefer the original. However, there’s always a group of people coming up to see me after a show who might say, “Oh, I never would have heard ‘One More Mile’ by James Cotton—nothing in my life would have pointed me there.”
So much of Colin James’s career has pointed him to this moment: joyfully tangled up in the blues, which, as he notes, “is the only genre where you can maintain a young profile at the age of 53.”
