Music By the Bay Live presents
Alastair Greene
St. Francis Centre; 78 Church Street South, Ajax
Saturday, April 27; 8-11:30 pm; $50 advance plus $4 charge

Alastair Greene’s
musical journey has been anything but traditional. His combination of Blues,
Southern Rock, and Jam Band sensibilities has been thrilling audiences for nearly
two decades. With recent performances at the Chicago Blues Festival and the Big
Blues Bender in Las Vegas as well as a recent tour filling in on guitar with
Starship featuring Mickey Thomas, and many guest appearances with such luminaries
as Eric Burdon, Walter Trout, Coco Montoya, Savoy Brown, John Nemeth, and
Debbie Davies, it’s crystal clear … Alastair Greene’s star is on the rise.
Alastair recently
plunged headfirst into a full-time solo career, stepping down after 7 years
touring the world as the guitarist for Rock legend, Alan Parsons. Alastair is
philosophical about his time playing with Parsons, saying, “I’ll always be grateful
for the opportunity Alan gave me to handle guitar and vocal duties in his band.
It was an honor to play the music created by the Alan Parsons Project to Alan’s
fans around the world. After 7 years, the time has come for me to truly pursue my own musical dream.”

Mike Zito
St. Francis Centre;
78 Church Street South, Ajax
Saturday, May 11; 8-11:30
pm; $55 advance plus $4 charge & HST
There
may not be a more honest bluesman than Mike Zito, whose 15th album ‘First Class
Life’ comes out May 11 on RUF Records. The rocking yet poignant title track
explores his journey from addiction to sobriety and then musical recognition;
he is a two-time 2017 Blues Music Award nominee. Zito’s star has been on the rise
of late both solo and as a member of the Royal Southern Brotherhood, with
bandmates Cyril Neville, Devon Allman, Charlie Wooton and Yonrico Scott.
In addition to the press and Blues Music Award love, Zito has earned from fellow artists. Anders Osborne says, "I love Mike Zito! He's got that rare kinda voice that resonates in your soul. All his hardship, life experiences and kind heart oozes out of every note his sings. His guitar playing dances delicately between a contemporary blues virtuoso and an old fashion soul man. Mike continues to impress me with his straightforward and honest songwriting. His joy and grace shine through every record he makes."

“It’s A Date Night”
Garrett Mason with special
guest poet J.G. Lutes
Irene’s Pub, 885 Bank
Street
Sunday, June 9 @ 3
pm; $10
One
of Canada’s finest players, Garrett Mason was raised in Truro, Nova Scotia by
his mother Pam, and father, veteran Canadian bluesman Dutch Mason. Dutch
stopped playing
guitar
before Garrett was born. Although he was not able to teach his son to play, he
certainly taught Garrett the structure of the blues and influenced Garrett’s
resulting sound. Surrounded by his father’s peers, Garrett had the benefit of
hearing and learning from a wide variety of musical talent.
Joining
Garrett is poet friend J.G.Lutes, making each night of the tour a time for both
music and ideas. The tour was born from a chance invite Lutes accepted to read
poems at a music festival last fall where J.G. was recorded reading his original
work. “I shared a video with Garrett of me reading poems at the North Along The
Shore Festival, in Avondale, NS. He liked it and said I should open for him. I
suggested we do a tour together.” The result is fourteen dates throughout
Eastern Canada.
“We’re
both from small towns in Nova Scotia and I think that makes for a rural honesty
in our work,” Lutes says. “I’m so proud to share a little bit of the stage with
Garrett because he’s really an unbelievable musical force. If you haven’t seen
him perform, and if you are intrigued by spoken word, then come out and hear a
special collaboration.”
Garrett
Mason and J.G.Lutes find purpose in creating art. They’re taking it on the road
to share with part of the country. Come hear ideas; some new, some old.

David Gogo
Neat Coffee Shop,
Burnstown ON
Friday, June 21 @ 8
pm; $35
With
the release of his 15th album “17 Vultures”, bluesman David
Gogo continues his blues rock crusade by pushing himself forward, yet again.
Not that looking back on his career is a bad thing. He has performed on stage
with the likes of BB King, Johnny Winter, Albert Collins, Bo Diddley, and Otis
Rush. He has been chosen to open shows for ZZ Top, George Thorogood, The
Tragically Hip, Little Feat, Jimmie Vaughan, Robert Cray, Robin Trower and
Wishbone Ash. His songs are featured in films and television and have been
covered by a variety of artists, most notably Buddy Guy.
Never
one to be pigeonholed into a strict blues category, this may be his most
diverse release to date. Although initially known for his ability to rip it up on
lead guitar with his electric performances, Gogo has also built up a solid
reputation over the last decade as an acoustic performer with his solo shows
that feature his vintage National steel guitar chops, as well as his entertaining
stories from the road. Usually he keeps these two sides of his abilities
separate, but he features both on the new album … [but] the collection of songs
ranges from traditional blues to very heavy contemporary influences. Along with
five new original songs by Gogo, the choice of cover songs are an interesting
variety with cuts by The Beatles, Barbecue Bob, Doug And The Slugs, and Bob
Dylan! Overall the album is an entertaining and diverse listen and gives Gogo
another strong batch of material to add to his many live performances!

Rob Lutes

Since the release of his first album “Gravity” in 2000, Rob Lutes has steadily built a collection of exquisite songs that inhabit the intersection of blues, folk, Americana, and the contemporary singer-songwriter genre. As skilled delivering a Piedmont blues classic as he is performing his own acclaimed original songs, Lutes' masterful finger style guitar work and soulful voice bring an unmistakable intensity to his live performances.
A double Maple Blues Award nominee as Acoustic Act and Songwriter of the Year in 2017, on his 7th album, “Walk in the Dark”, he does what he has done for years: kicks up a little dust, wades into some deep waters and tackles the realities of the world with depth, humour and a unique musical style.
Recorded mainly over three days in late January in a small studio in Montreal's Notre Dame de Grace borough, the recording captures the essence of Lutes' soulful voice and rhythmic guitar style, enveloped by a group of players who are no stranger to his groove. Featuring 12 new originals, including two co-writes with award-winning Americana songwriter Dale Boyle, and the forgotten John Prine gem /Rocky Mountain Time/, the album digs deep into the roots of Canadian and American music and delivers another strong statement. "This album, of all of them, was a journey into the unknown, which is why I like the title so much," Lutes says. "With a great co-producer, and a group of phenomenal players and friends, I went in to the studio to find these songs. And I really feel like we did that."
