almost any ordinary metric, like a marriage or a job, 10 years is a respectable
milestone. For a hard-touring and recording band, however, a decade is a
sweat-soaked, anecdote-amassing feat. Appropriately, the corresponding
anniversary gift is way better something made of tin.
Winner of 2018’s Blues Album of the Year Juno Award (their second overall), the latest and fifth release from singer/guitarist and harp player Steve Marriner, drummer Matt Sobb, and guitarist Tony D is precisely the kind of corker you’d expect from a trio of musical veterans who, between them, have boosted luminaries from Fabulous Thunderbird Kim Wilson to Buddy Guy, the late Jeff Healey to the lamented Stevie Ray Vaughan.
Launched in Ottawa in 2008, MonkeyJunk —handle inspired by delta blues great Son House, who once intoned, “I’m talking about the blues, I ain’t talking ’bout no monkeyjunk!” — have consistently updated contemporary blues with a blistering mix of chops, soul, grit, humour and harmony.
MonkeyJunk plays for keeps, as evidenced by the 10 electrifying tracks on their latest album, their first ever to feature bass guitar. “We wanted to push ourselves to work hard and to work efficiently and focused — to see what we could come up with in a shorter period of time,” drummer Sobb explains of “Time To Roll”. “The result is a brash, groovy-as-always collection of songs that show where the band has been and where we have arrived in many years of writing, recording, and touring.”
In addition to the above-mentioned pair of Juno Award wins (out of three nominations), MonkeyJunk has also netted an impressive 21 Maple Blues Awards, two Canadian Independent Music Awards, and a Blues Music Award (USA) for Best New Artist, for 2009’s sizzling “Tiger In Your Tank”. Recorded mainly over three days in late January in a small studio in Montreal's Notre Dame de Grace borough, the recording captures the essence of Lutes' soulful voice and rhythmic guitar style, enveloped by a group of players who are no stranger to his groove. Featuring 12 new originals, including two co-writes with award-winning Americana songwriter Dale Boyle, and the forgotten John Prine gem ‘Rocky Mountain Time’, the album digs deep into the roots of Canadian and American music and delivers another strong statement. Willie Dixon, Magic Slim & The Teardrops, John Primer’s
virtuosity as a blues musician was forged by legends. John started playing on
Maxwell Street, the birthplace of Chicago blues and soon became the house
bandleader at the infamous Theresa’s Lounge for seven years alongside Sammy Lawhorn, Junior Wells, James Cotton and others.
John Primer has undisputedly helped build the sound
and style of Chicago blues as we know it today. The echoes of tradition

Duke Robillard is a Grammy nominated blues
guitarist and singer. Robillard was a founding member of blues and swing
band Roomful of Blues, a member of The Fabulous Thunderbirds (replacing Jimmie
Vaughan) and has released over 30 albums under his own moniker. An
accomplished bluesman, Robillard has won a handful of Blues Music Awards over
the years, including Best Blues Guitarist four out of five years (2000, 2001,
2003, 2004) and most recently in 2016 for Best Acoustic Blues album of the
year, The Acoustic Blues of Duke Robillard.
He has also notched two Grammy nominations for
Best Traditional Blues Album, 2006’s Guitar Groove-A-Rama and 2009’s Stomp! The
Blues Tonight. Ever the versatile performer, Robillard has also
incorporated everything from jazz to swing to jump-style R&B Blues into his
music and collaborated with a who’s who of music legends from Tom Waits, Bob

over 30 years, The Fabulous Thunderbirds have been the quintessential American
band. The group's distinctive and powerful sound, influenced by a diversity of
musical styles, manifested itself into a unique musical hybrid via such

Kim Wilson, the sole original member, still spearheads the group as it evolves
into its newest incarnation.

could simply call The Emburys a roots and blues trio out of Peterborough,
Ontario, but let’s take a closer look, shall we?
Stage right, you will find guitarist and vocalist Emily Burgess with her treasured Gibson 339 guitar, singing her catchy original songs with a unique, warm and smooth vocal style. If her vocals put you at ease, don’t sit back and relax too quickly – she is about to rip into a blazing guitar solo, paying homage to her heroes Chuck Berry, Freddie King, and SRV in every lick.
Stage left, bassist Rico Browne is busy laying down the lowest notes in the band, while simultaneously singing the highest harmonies. He is producing a great deal of sound in this band, and he looks like he’s having the time of his life doing it.

If her vocals put you at ease, don’t sit back and relax too quickly – she is about to rip into a blazing guitar solo, paying homage to her heroes Chuck Berry, Freddie King, and SRV in every lick.
Stage left, bassist Rico Browne is busy laying down the lowest notes in the band, while simultaneously singing the highest harmonies. He is producing a great deal of sound in this band, and he looks like he’s having the time of his life doing it.
Finally, completing the V formation and anchoring the band is Marcus Browne on drums and vocals. You might see his band mates laughing during the show – looking back in awe of his never-ending creativity, technical prowess, and huge personality. Simply put, he is one fine musician.
This cohesive three-piece band sounds like it has more members hiding behind the curtains. With soaring three-part harmony, expert attention to detail on their instruments, and original tunes that you will be singing all the way home, The Emburys are worth a close-up look.
