SPECIAL EVENTS THIS WEEK
****************************
Irene’s Pub, 885 Bank Street
Monday, April 23 @ 8 pm; $10

From the Great Northern Plains of Western Canada, Little Miss Higgins struts and serenades her way, guitar in hand, lips blazoned red, onto any stage. As if she just drove in off the back-road of another time with gravel dust and a sunset trailing behind her, this pocket-sized powerhouse plays music brewed up in old-time country blues sprinkled with a little jazz and maybe a hint of folk. Whether it’s songs about passion or songs about panties, she writes about real things in a rooted and poetic way.

Amanda Jackson Trio
With Chas Guay & Nick Gauthier
Bar Robo, 692 Somerset Street West
Tuesday, April 24; 9-11 pm, doors at 8 pm; $10

Amanda Jackson Band (Trio) bring their “Into the Light” tour to Ottawa and will be joined by Chas Guay and Nick Gauthier! Chas Guay and Nick Gauthier also hail from Prince Edward Island and now reside in Ottawa. Together they combine some masterful songwriting and inspired musicianship. They will bring their recent collaborations and will also be performing material from Chas' albums.

The Amanda Jackson Trio (comprised of the songwriters from the Amanda Jackson Band) is all about connecting — with their lyrics, the audience, the planet and with each other. Whether it’s an upbeat song about living life to the fullest or a thoughtful and reflective song inspired by events around them, Amanda’s powerful and soul
ful voice, along with the accompaniment of Dale McKie (guitar, harmonica), Todd MacLean (guitar, piano, sax), creates an intimate listening experience that leaves the audience feeling as if they have had the chance to peer into the soul of the band. Their debut studio album, Fire in the Blue, was released in July 2017 and won the 2018 Urban Music PEI Recording of the Year. Most recently the band received national attention as one of the top 10 finalists for the 2018 CBC Searchlight new talent contest, earning their spot as one of the top five chosen by voters across the country for their songDance Into the Light. They were also featured as one of the standouts from the Top 100.

Rob Lutes
NAC 4th Stage, 1 Elgin Street
Friday, April 27 @ 8:30 pm; tickets $15

On his seventh album, acclaimed Canadian songwriter Rob Lutes does what he has done for years: kicks up a little dust, wades into some deep waters and tackles the realities of the world with depth, humour and a unique musical style. Situated at the intersection of the blues, folk, Americana and contemporary singer-songwriter genres, “Walk in the Dark” is an exquisite collection of songs that highlight Lutes’s unmistakable voice and literary writing style.

Roxanne Potvin Band
Bar Robo, 692 Somerset Street West
Friday, April 27 @ 8 pm

Previewing songs from the upcoming EP before its official release and a whole lot more … full band shows don’t come along too often friends! Don’t miss out!

From the bright, candy-striped grooves that lure us in at the outset of “For Dreaming”, to the darkling lavender hues of mélancolie that infiltrate the album like stiff spirits in our pink lemonade, Roxanne Potvin reminds us that, not only will she always carry a stash of R&B to hit us up with, but she also has a few other tricks up her sleeve.

Roxanne's music career grew out of an early love of classic blues and R&B, and she r
eceived her first significant attention with her 2006 Colin Linden-produced album The Way It Feels, which earned a JUNO nomination for Blues Album of the Year. Not to be typecast, Potvin experimented with new sounds on her subsequent albums No Love For The Poisonous, produced by Dave MacKinnon of alt-folk outfit FemBots, and Play, recorded in Vancouver with folk/roots producer Steve Dawson.

For Dreaming opened a new chapter for Potvin as a singer/songwriter with pop smarts, undeniable soul, and a ceaseless drive to keep pushing herself in uncharted directions. She's now finished work on the follow-up EP titled All it Was, to be released in 2018.

Reverend Payton’s Big Damn Band
The Brass Monkey, 250 Greenbank Road
Sunday, April 29; 7-10 pm

Southern Indiana-bred singer-guitarist Reverend Peyton is the bigger-than-life frontman of Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band. He has earned a reputation as both a singularly compelling performer and a persuasive evangelist for the rootsy country blues styles that captured his imagination early in life and inspired him and his band to make pilgrimages to Clarksdale, Mississippi to study under such blues masters as T-Model Ford, Robert Belfour and David “Honeyboy” Edwards. That passionate inspiration has made Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band America’s foremost country blues outfit.

NAC Presents
Bettye LaVette
NAC Babs Asper Theatre, 1 Elgin Street
Saturday, May 26 @ 7:30 pm; tickets from $49.50

Bettye LaVette began her career in 1962, at the age of 16, in Detroit, Michigan. She recorded for numerous major labels, including Atco, Epic, and Motown, over the course of the 1960s through the 1980s. In the 2000s she had a career resurgence and recorded multiple CDs, received a prestigious Pioneer Award by The Rhythm & Blues Foundation, a Blues Music Awards for Best Contemporary Female Blues Singer and Best Soul Blues Female Artist and was nominated for 3 GRAMMYs.

At 72 years old, she is still performing with the ferocity of a woman half her age. She is one of very few of her contemporaries who were recording during the birth of soul music in the 60s and is still creating vital recordings today. Now, in her 55th year in show business, she has recorded an album of all Bob Dylan songs, “Things Have Changed.” She will be performing the album in its entirety, along with other songs from throughout her career.

Paul DesLauriers Band
Rainbow Bistro, 76 Murray Street
Saturday, May 26

The Paul DesLauriers Band is made up of guitarist and singer Paul DesLauriers and the rhythm section of Greg Morency on bass and Sam Harrisson on drums. Having worked together on various projects for nearly 20 years, the band has become bound by friendship and an unshakable mutual respect. Based on this history and an uncanny musical chemistry, in 2013 they decided to focus all their energy and talents to develop their distinctive power trio.

These Montreal-based, Canadian Blues veterans blend rock with straight-ahead blues in a way that echoes the vibe of the great power trios from the ‘60s and ‘70s, yet they take the music to another level via modern stylings and an attack that’s free of clichés. The aural texture of their music changes on a dime from guitar-driven pyrotechnic blazing to a much milder blues boogie with seamless ease. It's all wondrously peppered with pleasing funky bass lines and a swamp-blues backbeat.

John Primer
Rainbow Bistro, 76 Murray Street
Friday, June 15; 8-11:30 pm

John Primer has undisputedly helped build the sound and style of Chicago blues as we know it today. The echos of tradition bellowing from the birthplaces he played such as: Maxwell Street, Theresa's, Checkerboard and Rosa's Lounges, pulse from every chord in his fingers today. John Primer is a Chicago Blues Living Legend.

John has played with such blues originators as: Sammy Lawhorn, Junior Wells, Buddy Guy, Smokey Smothers, Lonnie Brooks, Willie Dixon, Muddy Waters and Magic Slim before venturing out on his own in 1995. Since that time, he’s released or been recorded on over a dozen albums and toured extensively all over the world. A master storyteller and songwriter, his catalog of songs is endless. Some of the awards attached to him include: 2 Grammy nominations and 2 Living Legend honors as well as a Blues Music Award for Best Traditional Blues Artist from the National Blues Foundation and many more.

The depth of history and tradition that runs in John's blood from decades of master blues classes he took from all the Blues Godfathers builds his music catalog and unique style. John Primer is still at the top of his game. With his strong traditionalist blues phrasing, seasoned rhythm and blues vocals and lightning-fast slide guitar techniques, few artists can match him and none have his vast, real deal, blues history. There are very few fans, critics or musicians who will deny the fact that John Primer is the real deal.

Ry Cooder & His Band
Centrepointe Theatre, 101 Centrepointe Drive
Wednesday, June 27 @ 8 pm; tickets $91.50-$106.50

Ry Cooder is an American musician, songwriter, film score composer, and record producer. He is a multi-instrumentalist but is best known for his slide guitar-work, his interest in roots music from the United States, and his collaborations with traditional musicians from many countries.

Cooder's solo work draws upon many genres. Few musical artists of the past half century have introduced us to so many great songs; from so many rich musical traditions as has Ry Cooder. Whether they are choice nuggets from the early American blues catalogue, or gems from the birthing years of Rock & Roll or Rhythm & Blues; or Tex-Mex classics, African Blues or pre-Castro Cuban Music (Buena Vista Social Club), Ry Cooder has provided us with the most heartfelt and virtuosic of performances.

While many got to see Ry Cooder perform in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, it has been a rare occurrence to see him since. His 1981 shows at U of T’s Convocation Hall were voted “the best concerts of the year” by all three Toronto newspapers, the Star, the Globe & Mail and the Toronto Sun. This is the only time all three papers would agree on their choice.

Cooder performed at Centrepointe Theatres in 2016 with Ricky Skaggs and Sharon White, with two sold-out shows but this will be the first time he brings us an evening of essential Ry Cooder music to Ottawa. On June 27th, Ry Cooder and his Band play Centrepointe Theatres to celebrate much of his greatest musical work plus songs from his much-anticipated new recording “The Prodigal Son”, to be released in early May of this year.

For those who live south of the city, OBS member Bob Cavan notes that the National Public Radio (NPR) radio signal at 89.5 FM in Canton NY comes in pretty strong in Manotick. Bob recommends two shows in particular. Bob says “The Blue Note” Tuesdays 3 pm-5 pm, and “The Radio Bob Show” Wednesdays 3 pm-5 pm are both excellent shows – blues, ‘50s & ‘60s, rock & roll, R&B.

Unsung and On The Side
With Carolyn Fe
Tuesdays, 7-9 pm
Re-broadcast Saturday 10 am – noon & Sunday 2-4 pm (all times EST)
It’s all about the Blues, Jazz and its derivatives from around the globe and just around the corner. Songs rarely heard, from the very first recordings all the way to indie artists who consciously push the envelope to the next generation sounds of the genre; some older releases will be spun - just because the album in old, doesn't mean it's forgotten, thus the "On The Side" part of the show's title.
