Ghost Town Blues Band
Irene’s Pub, 885 Bank Street
Wednesday, April 18 @ 8 pm; $15

"With a shoot-from-the-hip Memphis attitude, and a STAX-busting explosion of modern blues vision, GTBB represents a welcome changing of the guard." - Living Blues Magazine

Recently featured at Montreal Jazz Festival, Beale Street’s latest success story, #4 on the 2018 Billboard Blues Charts (week 9), 2016 Independent Blues Award winner for "Best Contemporary Blues Song", 2015 Blues Blast Music Award Nominee for “Best Blues Band” and 2014 International Blues Challenge Runner-up is Ghost Town Blues Band. Not your grandpa’s blues band, their live show has been captivating audiences in the U.S. and Canada with a second-line horn entrance, cigar box guitars and electric push brooms to Allman Brothers style jams and even a hip-hop trombone player.

Horns, harmonies and homegrown instruments combined with an energetic and roots rich festival set makes Ghost Town Blues Band one of the “must see live bands on the festival circuit today.” Both Preston McEwen behind the drums and Matt Karner on the bass guitar are a punishing rhythm section behind multi-instrumentalist/frontman Matt Isbell with raunchy cigar box guitar licks and raspy "Dr. John-like, whiskey and gravel-soaked vocals." With the addition of Trombonist Suavo Jones, Tim Stanek on B3 and Taylor Orr on lead guitar, the grooves go from funky to "funk-nasty" as the band gains more notoriety in the blues festival and jam circuit. Ghost Town Blues Band performed all across North America at over 24 festivals in 2016 and already have 25 festivals and 12 international tours booked for 2017/2018.

“GTBB shows what can happen when the past is distilled through young sensibilities, voices, and instruments. This is 21st century blues at its best.” - Living Blues Magazine

With a sonically monumental performance and an energizing visual display, The Commotions command every room they play, drawing in audiences with their sizzling brass section, thumping backbeat, and sensitive ballads.

Come and join us on Friday April 20th for our last show in Ottawa before Festival season. Get your tickets fast before they sell out. Limited Early Bird tickets available at $8 until April 13th. After that tickets are priced at $10.

Roxanne Potvin Band
Bar Robo, 692 Somerset Street West
Friday, April 27 @ 8 pm

Previewing songs from the upcoming EP before its official release and a whole lot more … full band shows don’t come along too often friends! Don’t miss out!

From the bright, candy-striped grooves that lure us in at the outset of “For Dreaming”, to the darkling lavender hues of mélancolie that infiltrate the album like stiff spirits in our pink lemonade, Roxanne Potvin reminds us that, not only will she always carry a stash of R&B to hit us up with, but she also has a few other tricks up her sleeve.

Roxanne's music career grew out of an early love of classic blues and R&B, and she r
eceived her first significant attention with her 2006 Colin Linden-produced album The Way It Feels, which earned a JUNO nomination for Blues Album of the Year. Not to be typecast, Potvin experimented with new sounds on her subsequent albums No Love For The Poisonous, produced by Dave MacKinnon of alt-folk outfit FemBots, and Play, recorded in Vancouver with folk/roots producer Steve Dawson.

For Dreaming opened a new chapter for Potvin as a singer/songwriter with pop smarts, undeniable soul, and a ceaseless drive to keep pushing herself in uncharted directions. She's now finished work on the follow-up EP titled All it Was, to be released in 2018.

Paul DesLauriers Band
Rainbow Bistro, 76 Murray Street
Saturday, May 26

The Paul DesLauriers Band is made up of guitarist and singer Paul DesLauriers and the rhythm section of Greg Morency on bass and Sam Harrisson on drums. Having worked together on various projects for nearly 20 years, the band has become bound by friendship and an unshakable mutual respect. Based on this history and an uncanny musical chemistry, in 2013 they decided to focus all their energy and talents to develop their distinctive power trio.

These Montreal-based, Canadian Blues veterans blend rock with straight-ahead blues in a way that echoes the vibe of the great power trios from the ‘60s and ‘70s, yet they take the music to another level via modern stylings and an attack that’s free of clichés. The aural texture of their music changes on a dime from guitar-driven pyrotechnic blazing to a much milder blues boogie with seamless ease. It's all wondrously peppered with pleasing funky bass lines and a swamp-blues backbeat.

John Primer
Rainbow Bistro, 76 Murray Street
Friday, June 15; 8-11:30 pm

John Primer has undisputedly helped build the sound and style of Chicago blues as we know it today. The echos of tradition bellowing from the birthplaces he played such as: Maxwell Street, Theresa's, Checkerboard and Rosa's Lounges, pulse from every chord in his fingers today. John Primer is a Chicago Blues Living Legend.

John has played with such blues originators as: Sammy Lawhorn, Junior Wells, Buddy Guy, Smokey Smothers, Lonnie Brooks, Willie Dixon, Muddy Waters and Magic Slim before venturing out on his own in 1995. Since that time, he’s released or been recorded on over a dozen albums and toured extensively all over the world. A master storyteller and songwriter, his catalog of songs is endless. Some of the awards attached to him include: 2 Grammy nominations and 2 Living Legend honors as well as a Blues Music Award for Best Traditional Blues Artist from the National Blues Foundation and many more.

The depth of history and tradition that runs in John's blood from decades of master blues classes he took from all the Blues Godfathers builds his music catalog and unique style. John Primer is still at the top of his game. With his strong traditionalist blues phrasing, seasoned rhythm and blues vocals and lightning-fast slide guitar techniques, few artists can match him and none have his vast, real deal, blues history. There are very few fans, critics or musicians who will deny the fact that John Primer is the real deal.

Ry Cooder & His Band
Centrepointe Theatre, 101 Centrepointe Drive
Wednesday, June 27 @ 8 pm; tickets $91.50-$106.50

Ry Cooder is an American musician, songwriter, film score composer, and record producer. He is a multi-instrumentalist but is best known for his slide guitar-work, his interest in roots music from the United States, and his collaborations with traditional musicians from many countries.

Cooder's solo work draws upon many genres. Few musical artists of the past half century have introduced us to so many great songs; from so many rich musical traditions as has Ry Cooder. Whether they are choice nuggets from the early American blues catalogue, or gems from the birthing years of Rock & Roll or Rhythm & Blues; or Tex-Mex classics, African Blues or pre-Castro Cuban Music (Buena Vista Social Club), Ry Cooder has provided us with the most heartfelt and virtuosic of performances.

While many got to see Ry Cooder perform in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, it has been a rare occurrence to see him since. His 1981 shows at U of T’s Convocation Hall were voted “the best concerts of the year” by all three Toronto newspapers, the Star, the Globe & Mail and the Toronto Sun. This is the only time all three papers would agree on their choice.

Cooder performed at Centrepointe Theatres in 2016 with Ricky Skaggs and Sharon White, with two sold-out shows but this will be the first time he brings us an evening of essential Ry Cooder music to Ottawa. On June 27th, Ry Cooder and his Band play Centrepointe Theatres to celebrate much of his greatest musical work plus songs from his much-anticipated new recording “The Prodigal Son”, to be released in early May of this year.

NPR from Canton NY
For those who live south of the city, OBS member Bob Cavan notes that the National Public Radio (NPR) radio signal at 89.5 FM in Canton NY comes in pretty strong in Manotick. Bob recommends two shows in particular. Bob says “The Blue Note” Tuesdays 3 pm-5 pm, and “The Radio Bob Show” Wednesdays 3 pm-5 pm are both excellent shows – blues, ‘50s & ‘60s, rock & roll, R&B.

Unsung and On The Side
With Carolyn Fe
Tuesdays, 7-9 pm
Re-broadcast Saturday 10 am – noon & Sunday 2-4 pm (all times EST)
It’s all about the Blues, Jazz and its derivatives from around the globe and just around the corner. Songs rarely heard, from the very first recordings all the way to indie artists who consciously push the envelope to the next generation sounds of the genre; some older releases will be spun - just because the album in old, doesn't mean it's forgotten, thus the "On The Side" part of the show's title.
