Jon Knight & Soulstack
            CD Release
The Rainbow, 76 Murray Street
Saturday, June 20 @ 10 pm; $15

Award winning, roots music innovators, Jon Knight & Soulstack are set to release their 3rd studio recording on Saturday, June 20 at the Rainbow Bistro.

Produced by frontman, Jon Knight, this self-titled release, “Soulstack” (2015) was recorded ‘LIVE Off the Floor’ onto a vintage 2” analogue tape machine at Canterbury Music Company (Toronto). Six men in a room recording direct to tape - Now this is Old School!

There is nothing ‘old’ about these ten new songs, however, as this release follows the band’s other innovative and critically acclaimed releases; “Five Finger Discount” (2013), and Big Red” (2012), and is just one of two projects that the prolific band will release this year; A ‘Live Acoustic’ DVD/Blu-ray will also be released later this summer.

Check out videos for two of the new songs:

Bobby Thompson Project
The Rainbow Bistro, 76 Murray Street
Sunday, June 28 @ 8 pm; $15

Awe-inspiring master guitarist and vocalist Bobby Thompson is no stranger to the blues and rock world.  He cut his teeth learning to play in the old blues clubs of D.C. from the likes of Bobby Parker.  After honing his craft as a much sought after support man, Thompson decided to step out as a solo artist, releasing three albums since 2011.  A recent review from Roots Music Report claims Thompson’s songs portray "muscular blues- and soul-rock strong on soulful vocals and cut-above-the-norm originals."  With his smooth, gripping vocal stylings and his perfect musical taste on anything with a string, Thompson is what’s referred to as a “musician’s musician.  Considered a “must see” act of the Northeast region, Bobby was nominated for the D.C area Musician of the Year award in 2015.

The Bobby Thompson Project is his latest collaboration with New Orleans groove master Jeff Mills and Mississippi bass extraordinaire Danny Infante.  This trio is wrought with deep emotion and blazes down the path pioneered by the great Jimi Hendrix, blending deeply-rooted blues traditions with a popular rock edge to create a sound that will stir every soul.

Georgette Fry
At Last! Georgette Sings Etta
Harold Shenkman Hall, Shenkman Arts Centre, 245 Centrum Blvd, Orleans
Friday, July 3 @ 8 pm; tickets $48.75

Jazz, blues, soul – the legendary Etta James sang it all – and who better to take us through her songbook than Canada's own 2013 CMA Singer of the Year, Georgette Fry. Backed by her excellent 12 piece band, with 50 members of the local chapters of her Shout Sister! choir providing gospel harmonies, Georgette Fry offers a soulful Etta James Retrospective.

Like Etta James, Fry has a big voice that seamlessly glides across musical genres. Her love of “good music” does not sit solely with one particular iteration, making this retrospective a powerful work in its own right. Georgette never needs to imitate; she brings her own solid,
sensitive self to these treasured songs and honours Etta's legacy. Fry's excellent band members are all-stars from her hometown, Kingston. Jon 'Bunny' Stewart (sax) arranged the music for the show. He plays on stage with James Wannamaker (sax), Janet McRae (trumpet), Dave Barton (guitar), Zak Colbert (bass), Ken Hall (organ), Al McCain (piano), Duncan Holt (drums) and vocalists Kevin Head, Mariko Ohtake and Christina Foster.

Rounding out this already spectacular line-up is Shout Sister!, offering gospel backup during the finale. Shout Sister! is Fry's own choral love-child. “I started Shout Sister at the suggestion and with the support of one of my vocal students. The idea of gathering women together to sing without judgement was appealing and daunting at first, but I knew that if I had at least 50 singers willing to blend, that we could make a beautiful sound.” From that humble beginning, just a few years ago, to 19 chapters across Ontario, Fry invites 50 Ottawa-area women to back her up on stage at the Shenkman.

At Last! Georgette Sings Etta has toured Eastern Ontario to rave reviews and sold-out houses, but has never been performed in Ottawa.
