Chris Antonik
            CD Release “Better For You”
Rainbow, 76 Murray Street
Saturday, May 11

In 2010, Canadian blues guitarist, singer and songwriter Chris Antonik arrived onto the National and International blues scene with his self-titled debut album which received widespread critical acclaim, placed in the Roots Music Report Top 100 charts for over a year, and garnered Antonik a nomination for Best New Artist of the Year at Canada’s national Maple Blues Awards.  After extensive touring and major blues festival appearances in Canada in 2011 and 2012, Chris now returns with his highly anticipated follow-up “Better For You”. “Better For You” is a highly personal and reflective album for Antonik, dealing with rebuilding relationships, learning to put others first, and developing a positive moral code in a world full of blues.
With Antonik on the majority of lead vocals, guest vocalists include: two-time Grammy award-winner Mike Mattison (The Derek Trucks Band, The Tedeschi-Trucks Band), 2013 American Blues Music award-nominee Shakura S’Aida, and the incredibly soulful Josh Williams (The Fat Cats), who also features on keyboards throughout the album.  The electrifying and eternally funky Chris Chiarelli (drums) and Andrew Taylor (bass) once again hold down the rhythm section.  Other guest artists include: blues Juno award-winners Steve Marriner (MonkeyJunk) and Julian Fauth, as well as Canadian music veterans Suzie Vinnick, and Richard Underhill, who arranged all the horns on the album. Co-produced by Antonik and Ted Onyszczak, the album was recorded by Grammy award-winning engineer Jeremy Darby (U2, Mick Jagger, Colin Linden) at Toronto’s Canterbury Studios, and includes 10 original songs written and co-written by Antonik, and one cover song.

AREA HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK
****************************************
The 17th edition of Virée Blues Boréale present
The Jeff Rogers Band
Le Petit Chicago, 50 Promenade du Portage, Gatineau
Wednesday, May 8 @ 8 pm

After a 4-year delay, this virtuoso of the piano, with a deep warm Soul voice, an artist who left a strong impression on us on his first visit is coming back in a slightly different set-up. The brass section has been put aside for a while to allow for two new members, one on guitar and another on a B3 organ to help improve the groove of an already funky main section, so as to sound like New Orleans style Soul and Funk. All the original compositions, a whole bunch of new covers and a new BIG sound;   Meet the new Jeff Rogers Band.

A native of Bathurst New Brunswick, in 1980, Jeff Rogers soon moved to Ottawa where he now lives.   Attracted to the piano around age 4 and encouraged by his parents, he became the keyboard player of a first group at 10. At the Nepean School of Music, he began moving toward jazz on the alto saxophone, leaving the piano aside. This is when he joined the Nepean All-City Jazz Band, at 17. This shift led to success as Jeff then earned the position of first alto sax in an 18 piece band, chosen among over 6000 Canadian musicians, at the MusicFest National All-Star Band in Vancouver, in 1999. After his studies, Jeff decided to learn two new instruments: the voice by singing and the guitar by playing it (sure!); he rehearsed in the region’s open-mic parties. This allowed him to develop the incredible voice that we can now hear as well as improve his stage presence. During that period of time, he started experimenting with various music styles that were new to him, from Funk to Punk and Rock and Pop, for sure, but always keeping his fondness for the Salsa, the Jazz, the Swing and, for sure, the Blues.A member of the famous Southern Rock group The Cooper Brothers, and of Silver Creek, those many eclectic projects led to defining the now very popular group that performs in a hundred or so shows a year across the river and all over Canada, The Jeff Rogers Band.

After their eponymous first CD, launched in April 2007, in which the group offered a Blues Funk sound with a hint of Rock, with keyboard and sax front row but always supported by the warm deep sound of Jeff’s voice, we began hearing The Jeff Rogers Band in lots of festivals as well as opening for celebs like Taj Mahal, Colin Linden, Sonny Landreth and The Downchild Blues Band. In 2012, we hear a definitely Soul / R & B Jeff Rogers on his second album “Let It Show”. We also can perceive traces of Jeff’s major influences, B.B. King, Stevie Wonder, Jamiroquai, Prince, Donny Hathaway, Ray Charles, John Mayer and Ben Harper.

The eagerly expected return of a superb voice who, like so many of the Blues and of the Soul Greats, hides a major mastery of instruments behind a relaxed look: Jeff Rogers - vocals and keyboards, with James Burmeister - Bass, Ross Murray - Drums, Jeff Devalk & Anders Drerup - Electric Guitar and Don Cummings - Hammond Organ.

Ross Neilsen & Conor Gains
Rainbow, 76 Murray Street
Friday, May 24 @ 9 pm

Canada’s hardest working blues rock musician, Ross Neilsen, does it right. He’s taking strong, timeless material to the place that matters: The People. Proving hard work pays off Neilsen has been honoured with a nomination for Best New Artist at The Maple Blues Awards in 2010, two Rising Star nominations from CBC, back to back Blues Album of the Year nominations from the East Coast Music Association, a win for Best Blues Recording for Redemption at the 2010 MusicNB awards and in 2012 Neilsen was a semi finalist in the solo/duo category at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, TN. He is a real, old-school kind of artist. Write. Tour. Record. Tour. Repeat.

Songwriter and blues guitarist extraordinaire, Conor Gains has performed with the BB King All stars, in Nashville and Memphis, and was invited by the late Les Paul to join him on stage at New York’s Iridium Jazz Club – all before his 16th birthday!   Now, still 18 years of age, Gains has been collaborating with fellow Cambridge, Ontario musicians Vic Freitas (Drums) and Jeremy Patey (Bass) for the past two years. The results have been staggering. The Conor Gains Band won the Grand River Blues Society’s ‘Road to Memphis’ competition and represented the region in the International Blues Challenge in Memphis January 31st – February 4th, 2012. The band made an enormous impression there receiving invitations across North America.   As a songwriter Gains is blossoming and gradually introducing more of his original songs into the band’s setlist. Two years ago he also had the privilege of writing a song with Grammy Award winner Dan Hill who said of the young man ” I swear he’s brilliant.”   The band’s debut album “The Junction Sessions” was released January 28th, 2012 and features eleven Conor Gains original songs with special guest Shakura S’Aida, the 2011 Maple Blues Award Winning vocalist, appearing on two tracks.

Johnny Max has built up a solid reputation as one of those guys who gives 110% and is one of the most action-packed and satisfying entertainers around.

To listen to Johnny Max tell it, and to watch Johnny Max present it, you understand very quickly that there’s more to creating great music than simply performing a first-rate piece of music well. It’s much more all-encompassing than that.  Max’s take includes engaging the audience, making his show accessible.  He wants to more than simply feed off the audience, he looks to make them part of the experience.  And he and his fans wouldn’t have it any other way.

Zaphod Beeblebrox presents
The Legendary Southern Renegade Provocateur
Tav Falco
Zaphod Beeblebrox, 27 York Street
Thursday, June 20; Doors @ 8pm; advance tickets (limited time) $15
http://www.ticketweb.ca/snl/VenueListings.action?venueId=10807

From Paris, France via Memphis, Tennessee, Acclaimed and revered by his musical peers and critics alike, here is your chance to see the indie rock legend. Falco has said his main artistic purpose is "to stir up the dark waters of the unconscious."

Tav Falco - The master of a raw and shambolic fusion of rockabilly, blues, and fractured noise, Tav Falco was, along with the Cramps, one of the earliest purveyors of what would come to be known as psychobilly, and he anticipated the fractured but hard-hitting blues wailing of the Gories and the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion by close to a decade.

Falco put together the first version of his band the Panther Burns (named for a famous Tennessee plantation), a group whose revolving membership included Alex Chilton and James Luther Dickinson in its early incarnations. Falco then relocated to New York City, where he brought his frenetic roots music to the Big Apple's then-thriving no wave scene, which led to Falco's major-label release, “Blow Your Top”, a 1982 EP issued by Chris Stein's (Blondie) Animal label. Throughout the 1980s and '90s, Falco began dividing his time between Europe and the United States, and released a slow but steady stream of recordings with shifting Panther Burns lineups while holding down another career as an actor.

His latest CD Live In London At The 100 Club, was released in 2012.

"Fraser plays the upright bass so well, he needs no percussionist. And Daley is a magician on guitar" - The Hamilton Spectator

This duo with the unusual name is - Shawn Hall on vocals and harp (the Harpoonist) and Matt Rogers on guitar, stomp board, bass, keyboards and back-up vocals (the Axe Murderer). They make a lot of sound for just two guys and bring a fresh take to roots blues with their contemporary lyrics and unique arrangements - yet they remain true to the old blues traditions. It's blues for a changing world - or as one of their fans put it - "blues that gets you in the crotch". Maple Blues Award nominee for Best New Artists Of The Year in 2012.

CBC RADIO CONCERTS ON DEMAND
****************************************
Canada Live - Radio Two @ 7pm, Monday to Thursday; Friday – Radio One

Tuesday, May 7
concert 1: Sarah Slean with Symphony Nova Scotia
recorded at the Rebecca Cohn Auditorium in Halifax
Sarah Slean is a pop diva pianist, vocalist, and arranger with an incredible imagination and one of the most loyal followings in the country. Christos Hatzis is a wide ranging master of classical composition. Together they teamed up to create one of the most moving, exhilarating and sophisticated pop/classical collaborations of the decade. Christos Hatzis tries his arranging chops with Sarah's tune "Parasol" and then together they dig into a three-movement song cycle, "Lamento," that draws upon the classic rock techniques of Led Zeppelin and the Eagles. A true meeting of the minds. For this performance, Sarah Slean is backed up by Symphony Nova Scotia, directed by Bernhard Gueller.

concert 2: Mundo Montreal, Recorded at the Lion D'or in Montreal on Feb 24, 2013
CBC Music's Mundo Montreal in co-operation with the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Montreal put together 1 moment Together with Paul Kunigis and a cast that included special guests Mamselle and Christine Tassan. Paul Kunigis' first 2 records, the 1997 Pamietan and the Juno Award winning 2003 Balagan were both surprising hits with Quebecers. His newest release entitled 1 moment! promises to repeat that success across Canada. It continues his fascination with a spirited cross over style that combines both Polish and Quebecois folk elements. The Lion D'or in Montreal was jam packed to see Kunigis and his group party with friends - the Mexican-born singer songwriter Mamselle and gypsy swing guitarist and singer Christine Tassan.

Wednesday, May 8
concert 1: Rose Cousins, recorded at the Ironwood Stage in Calgary

Corb Lund released his seventh disc, Cabin Fever, in the summer of 2012. Canada Live podcast, released on Thursdays
Thursday, May 9 on the Canada Live podcast
Jill Barber croons vintage country and steps out with Hank Williams, recorded at CBC Vancouver's Studio One
90 years since he was born in Alabama and 60 years since his passing, Hank Williams remains one of the most important country music artists of all time, and a man who knew how to write about the heart, good and bad. Jill Barber is a confident, sultry-voiced chanteuse, a Canadian sweetheart, loved by audiences wherever she tours. Barber's original songs transport us to a golden age we thought ended with the 40's and 50's, when popular music was filled with romance, style and was undeniably cool. Vintage country music fits right in! Jill stepped out of her well coiffed and crafted music and sound. She didn't put on gingham and fringe, although the boots were nice, but she definitely went old country and paid homage to Hank and other great songwriters of the day. We were treated to a great night of country crooning. Jill Barber was joined onstage by the fabulous Steve Dawson and the Black Hens for a mostly acoustic evening of tunes by Hank Williams and other vintage classics.
