2012 Neilsen was a semi finalist in the solo/duo category at the International

Songwriter and blues guitarist
extraordinaire, Conor Gains has
performed with the BB King All stars, in Nashville and Memphis, and was
invited by the late Les Paul to join him on stage at New York’s Iridium Jazz
Club – all before his 16th birthday! Now, still 18 years of age, Gains
has been collaborating with fellow Cambridge, Ontario musicians Vic Freitas
(Drums) and Jeremy Patey (Bass) for the past two years. The results have been
staggering. The Conor Gains Band won the Grand River Blues Society’s ‘Road to
Memphis’ competition and represented the region in the International Blues
Challenge in Memphis January 31st – February 4th, 2012. The band made an
enormous impression there receiving invitations across North America. As
a songwriter Gains is blossoming and gradually introducing more of his original
songs into the band’s setlist. Two years ago he also had the privilege of
writing a song with Grammy Award winner Dan Hill who said of the young man ” I
swear he’s brilliant.” The band’s debut album “The Junction Sessions”
was released January 28th, 2012 and features eleven Conor Gains original songs
with special guest Shakura S’Aida, the 2011 Maple Blues Award Winning vocalist,
appearing on two tracks.

Fortunate Few”, multi award-winning, roots-blues musician, Thom Swift will take the stage at The
Blacksheep Inn in Wakefield on Sunday, May 26 at 4:20 p.m. The show is a double
bill with Ottawa-based, roots-blues musician and
Monkey Junk member, Steve Marriner.
Based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Swift is
well known for his “sophisticated guitar-playing”, “earthy baritone voice” and
“textured and truthful” lyrics.
“The Fortunate Few” (Independent), released
March 5, is Swift’s third solo recording. Produced by Swift, the CD offers ten tracks and features
acclaimed musicians, Geoff Arsenault,
Brian Bourne, Kevin Breit, Scott Marshall, Mike
Stevens, and Bill Stevenson.
Prior to
his fruitful solo career, Swift played with blues-folk trio Hot Toddy for 12
years. As a solo artist, Swift has three previous award-winning recordings to
his credit: 2007’s “Into The Dirt” (Independent),
2010’s “Blue Sky Day”
(Groundswell/Warner) and a 2011 children’s recording titled, “The Wood Buffalo Youth Song Project” (Independent).

Tav Falco - The master of a raw and shambolic fusion of
rockabilly, blues, and fractured noise, Tav Falco was, along with the Cramps,
one of the earliest purveyors of what would come to be known as psychobilly,
and he anticipated the fractured but hard-hitting blues wailing of the Gories
and the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion by close to a decade.
Falco put together the first version of his band the
Panther Burns (named for a famous Tennessee plantation), a group whose
revolving membership included Alex Chilton and James Luther Dickinson in its
early incarnations. Falco then relocated to New York City, where he brought his
frenetic roots music to the Big Apple's then-thriving no wave scene, which led
to Falco's major-label release, “Blow Your Top”, a 1982 EP issued by Chris
Stein's (Blondie) Animal label. Throughout the 1980s and '90s, Falco began dividing
his time between Europe and the United States, and released a slow but steady
stream of recordings with shifting Panther Burns lineups while holding down
another career as an actor.
His latest CD Live In London At The 100 Club, was released in 2012.

Dinner & Show fundraiser Series features some of Canada's premier acoustic

was again a Grammy nominee for Best Traditional Blues Album. In 2011, Hammond
was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame of the Blues Foundation (formerly the
W.C. Handy Awards). John Hammond is one of the world's premier acoustic blues
artists. So when Hammond returned to Vancouver to play solo, and with Steve
Dawson, in an intimate acoustic setting, CBC Music was there to capture the
performance.

Toronto women who are known for their songwriting skills and musicianship. As
part of Canada Live's celebration of Guitar Month in November 2012, we thought
it would be fun to invite these three women into the studio to show off their
guitar skills. It turned out to be fun for them as well. Not only will you hear
the women perform their own songs, you can also catch them trading riffs as
they collaborate with each other. Tune in to hear some choice blues and jazz
guitar with a ladies' touch.

In celebration of 2012 International Women's Day, CBC Radio 2 put on a
special concert at Hugh's Room in Toronto. One of the performers was Treasa
Levasseur. Her powerful vocals filled the room as she performed songs from her
album Broad. That disc was nominated for Best Recording of the Year at the 2013
Maple Blues Awards, and Treasa was also nominated in the songwriter and female
