To quote Robin Willams, "Spring is nature's
way of saying - let's party!" I
hope you can join us for this purpose on Friday, May 4 at Greenfields Pub,
getting underway around 9 pm.
Sweet and the Back Beat had a fantastic time during
our last visit to Greenfields on April 30, 2011, thanks to multiple birthday
celebrations which gave the party plenty of positive energy. It would be
nice to see you again at this great venue. We always enjoy the fine
stage, lighting and sound - and they have excellent food and drink as well.
Please mark the date - we hope to see you.

The 24th
Street Wailers
Irene’s Pub, 885 Bank
Street
Friday, May 25 @ 9:30
pm
Sponsored
by the Toronto Blues Society, this band made a real impression at the
International Blues Challenge in Memphis, February 1-4. Their first performance on Wednesday at Wet
Willie’s initiated a buzz that resulted in a full house for their second
performance on Thursday; they closed out the First Great Canadian Polar Bear
Blues Showcase in fine style on Thursday afternoon; they filled their venue to
capacity for their appearance in the semi-finals on Friday night; and they were
the only Canadian band asked to participate in the Kings of Beale Street
competition on Saturday night. And they
sold a whole lot of CDs.
Their 2011 release "Dirty Little
Young’uns" debuted at number three in Canada and number eight overall on
the Roots Music Report and was on the DAWG FM Top 20 charts for several months.
It was the
featured “Blues Breaker of the Week” on Dan
Aykroyd’s House of Blues Radio Hour. "This
is just great, gritty, fun, live stuff!"...Dan Aykroyd
Following
the success of “Dirty Little Young’uns”, they were in Halifax in early March to
record their 2nd CD and on May 27 they’ll be at Irene’s for CD
release party for their sophomore release, “Unshakeable”.
Check
out this video for more on the new CD … http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7FAGQGzs5Y&feature=plcp&context=C43ea970VDvjVQa1PpcFPgQXdqhhUVj01_Jz
The
young musicians in this band all studied music at college so they know their
stuff, but they also know how to entertain and can appeal to the younger
demographic that is needed in our blues audience. The 24th Street Wailers will be
delivering their patented incredible high energy and fun blues … this is a ‘DON’T MISS’ show!

Studebaker John
Rainbow, 76 Murray
Street
Friday, May 25 @ 10
pm
Studebaker
John Grimaldi was born in an Italian-American section of Chicago and started
playing harmonica at age 7. Under the spell of music he heard on Maxwell
Street, Chicago’s famed blues melting pot, Grimaldi began performing as
Studebaker John and the Hawks in the ‘70s. The band name referenced the
Studebaker Hawk, a car Grimaldi still owns today, and was also intended as a
tribute to his friend, J.B. Hutto and the Hawks. John began playing guitar
after a life-changing experience of seeing Hound Dog Taylor and the
Houserockers perform. “…Hound Dog started playing, hitting notes that sent
chills up and down my spine. He was versatile and powerful and would play
rhythm as well as leads. I left there knowing what I wanted to do. I had to
play slide guitar.”
As
a songwriter and musician, Studebaker John has emerged as a major creative
force in the world of the blues today. Ahead of the pack, with vision and
foresight, creating a new standard and landscape for this music’s future… with
John at the wheel, the future is now!

of tenderness, Tad wrung all the emotion possible out of three numbers

heart-stopping rendition of the BMA nominated ‘Rained All Night’ (Song of the Year).

George Thorogood
& the Destroyers
Gordie Johnson opening
CE Centre, 4899
Uplands Drive
Sunday, June 3;
tickets $48
While
many bands change sounds as the music scene evolves, George Thorogood & the
Destroyers stay the course. They know who they are, and they’re out to tell the
world about it. Faithful to their blues roots, they’ve continued to play the
rough and ready sounds that draw from the influences of John Lee Hooker, Muddy
Waters and Howlin Wolf.
Gordie
Johnson is joining the bill and will combine blues and gospel with dub for an
electric set of boot-stomping tunes. Johnson's extraordinary guitar stylings
are the driving force behind Big Sugar and Grady, two bands with a large
following in North America. This will be an excellent introduction to another
side of the man and his music.

CBC RADIO CONCERTS ON
DEMAND
*******************************************************
CBC Radio Two, 7pm
Monday, April 30
concert 2: Peter Elkas, recorded at The Rivoli, Toronto, part of the Radio 2 NXNE showcase
With his latest CD Repeat Offender, Peter Elkas proves that blue-eyed soul isn't strictly the domain of those from Philly. In fact, Hall and Oates had better run for cover when they see Peter and his band coming. Peter Elkas and his band bring this Canadian version of soul to the Rivoli in Toronto for their performance as part of the Radio 2 NXNE (North by Northeast) showcase.
Wednesday, May 2
concert 1: BĂ©la Fleck and the Flecktones, recorded at the Bessborough Gardens in Saskatoon as part of the 2011 Saskatchewan Jazz Festival
It's not often a musician is referred to as the "premier performer in the world" of their chosen instrument. That's a tall order. Think of all the brilliant guitar players, pianists, and violinists you've heard. It would be hard for everyone to agree on who is the best on the planet. But when it comes to banjoists there's a clear leader - BĂ©la Fleck. Fleck is a master of musical eclecticism. He plays everything from blue grass to bebop, traditional African music to rock. He even won a Grammy for Best Classical Crossover album in 2001. Fleck joined forces with his Flecktones in 1988. There's even a Canadian connection to their beginning since he met pianist and harmonica player Howard Levy at the Winnipeg Folk Festival. After hearing Victor Lemonte Wooten play some bass licks over the phone Fleck recruited him. Victor's brother Roy Wooten, otherwise known as "Futureman", rounds out the quartet. Last summer these four masterful musicians reconvened for a reunion tour. As always all manners of genres come into play, and the result is a meeting of musical minds that remains, as ever, utterly indescribable. We were able to catch up with the band at the Bessborough Gardens in Saskatoon when they were featured performers at the Saskatchewan Jazz Festival.

concert 1: 54-40, recorded in CBC Vancouver's Studio 40
The sold-out 54-40 concert in CBC Vancouver's Studio 40 was like a love-in: exciting, at times intimate, and fun the whole night long. It's been more than 25 years since 5440's first commercial album (1986) The Green Album. This year marks their 30 year anniversary as a band. Perhaps best known for "I Go Blind" and "Ocean Pearl," they played both with the crowd knowing all the words and singing along. A few tunes were very special, as Dave Genn arranged acoustic versions of four songs, including "Crossing A Canyon" and "One Gun" with a string quartet accompanying.
