“Up 2 Zero”, Anthony Gomes’ latest offering, bristles with that passion and personality of the blues, a testimony to the healing power of music to uplift, console, move and motivate the spirit. One of the key songs on the new CD is the searing mission statement of ‘Back To The Start’. Comments Gomes, “I wanted to begin the CD with a powerhouse shuffle to set the tone of where we are at musically. Lyrically, the song says it all. As simple as it sounds, you have to follow your heart and I had to get back to where I started. For me, it’s the blues. I can always try different things, but I always find myself going back to where the music started.”
Another track central to the album’s essence is ‘Room 414’. “A lot of folks ask me what the significance is of that room. They wonder what exactly happened behind those closed doors,” Anthony laughs, “It is actually the room number at the Gunter Hotel in San Antonio where Robert Johnson recorded all his material. It blows my mind to think that all those haunting songs were captured in a hotel room.”
The CD also includes two new versions of Gomes’ most popular songs. ‘Fly Away’, previously entitled ‘Bluebird’, is presented in a more gritty and blues-influenced fashion. ‘Darkest Before The Dawn’/’Le Soleil Se Levera’ appears in both English and French versions on the album. “My mother is from Quebec City and the French-Canadian culture is a big part of who we are. I am so proud to be able to sing this song in French. For me, it’s a highlight on this album.” stated Gomes.
“The title of “Up 2 Zero” embodies so many different things,” says Gomes, “It represents getting back to the blues – back to ground zero. It also signifies a countdown to breaking new ground and moving forward or upward. There’s a beautiful anticipation of hitting zero. Musically, most people try to look ahead for inspiration or seek out what’s cutting edge. I seem to go in the other direction and look backwards to be inspired. In a strange way, when I look to Muddy Waters or Robert Johnson I hear the future.”

1st Annual Ottawa Grassroots Mini-Folk Festival

The OGF festival will be an annual family-oriented celebration of folk music, dance and other participatory arts. The 1st Annual OGF has announced the following headliners and programming for its community-oriented celebration of music and dance: Rick Fines, Katherine Wheatley, Missy Burgess and many more.
The one-day festival will consist of a number of different components which will take place in various parts of the building. In the afternoon, the downstairs area will offer a diverse range of participatory activities, including a ukulele sing-along, contra dancing, yoga and a "playback" theatre performance.
At the same time, the hall upstairs will feature several respected and talented performers, including the wonderful singer-songwriter Ana Miura, along with Open Stage performance opportunities for children as well as adults. The Open Stage is a Spirit of Rasputin’s (SoR) presentation. All afternoon activities are FREE, with donations accepted for CKCU FM, Ottawa's long-running community radio station.
The evening concert will feature Ottawa's own Missy Burgess as the opener, celebrating her latest CD, "Play Me Sweet" followed by the award-winning, ever-popular singer-songwriters Rick Fines and

The Kingston Blues Society announces a new series of blues shows – BLUES BANDS OF ONTARIO – which will take place the first Saturday of each month.
Many of the bands showcased in this new series have produced CDs; some have been playing together for many years and some are new and upcoming. For $3, you just can’t beat it.

The show features a heavy dose of electric blues and rhythm and blues, with the occasional selection of sixties soul. The first hour is dedicated to artist profiles and reviews of recordings on particular labels. In the second hour there is a blues calendar, a rundown of events in Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa, and interviews with “new and reissued blues and rhythm and blues tracks on wax”, alternating with “live blues and R&B for a Sunday night” in the last half hour of the show. On the last Sunday of every month, the show goes “down in the delta” for a selection of acoustic blues tracks in the final half hour of the program.

Vancouver's Downtown Eastside is Canada's poorest postal code. Throughout its century-plus history, First United Church has provided outreach and support for this community through social workers, prison visitors and ethnic ministries. Keeping pace with the growing demands to work with those struggling with issues of addictions, mental illness, homelessness and poverty is a challenge. 2011's version of their now-annual fundraiser was the third performance of Duke Ellington's Sacred Music supporting this work. Dee Daniels and Fred Stride instigated these benefit concerts, and they are joined by Marcus Mosely, The Fred Stride Orchestra, The Sacred Music Gospel Choir and tap dancer Alex Dugdale.
