“Shout Sister!” Choir
Spring Concert Fundraiser
Woodroffe United Church, 207 Woodroffe Ave., Ottawa
Saturday, June 11 @ 8 pm, doors open 7:30 pm; tickets $15, children under 8 – free
This is an all-ages show. Bring the whole family!
Ottawa’s Shout Sister!” choir is making a “joyful noise” for Ottawa Soup Sisters. Directed by Jody Benjamin, the choir is full of enthusiasm and energy. It is infectious fun; come and catch the bug!
Shout Sister! takes an unorthodox and enjoyable approach to choral singing. The focus is on relaxing and having fun while singing a wide range of popular music. Audiences delight at their selection of pop tunes with lots of Canadian content. There are no auditions and new members of all ages are welcome at any time. Our members enjoy fellowship and mutual support in addition to joyful singing. Jody directs two choirs, one in Ottawa Centre and the other in Ottawa West, and they are joining forces for their first spring fundraiser. The choirs support a local charity every spring with the focus on women and children. They sing at area Seniors’ homes and welcome invitations to support local fundraisers throughout the year.
Soup Sister events are hands-on, soup-making gatherings that culminate in the provision of hundreds of nourishing bowls of soup delivered to women and children residing in the Interval House of Ottawa. They are also deeply committed to raising awareness about domestic abuse and family violence. A shelter representative addresses every Soup Sisters group, providing an overview of the many healing and prevention programs available at the shelter. Come and enjoy a great concert as we support Ottawa Soup Sisters.

Phil Ochs: There But For Fortune
Mayfair Theatre, 1074 Bank Street
Tuesday, June 14 @ 7 pm; $15
The Ottawa Folk Festival presents, in conjunction with RavenLaw and the Ottawa Folklore Centre, an exclusive screening of Kenneth Bowser's documentary, Phil Ochs: There But For Fortune
As our country [USA] continues to embroil itself in foreign wars and once again pins its hopes on a new leader’s promise for change, the feature length documentary, “Phil Ochs: There But For Fortune” is a timely tribute to an unlikely American hero. Phil Ochs, a folk singing legend, who many called “the emotional heart of his generation”, loved his country and he pursued its honour, in song and action, with a ferocity that had no regard for consequences. Wielding only a battered guitar, a clear voice and a quiver of razor sharp songs, he tirelessly fought the “good fight” for peace and justice throughout his short life.
“Phil Ochs: There But For Fortune” reveals the biography of a conflicted truth seeking troubadour who, with a guitar in hand, stood up for what he believed in and challenged us all to do the same. Unyielding in his political principals and unbending in his artistic vision, Phil Ochs, though branded a traitor by his critics, was above all a fiercely patriotic American. This is his story.
Movie Trailer – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WUAH0C1NcCI
$15 tickets include admission to the film PLUS the After-Party just down the street at Patty's Pub, 1186 Bank Street!
- a sing-along hosted by Arthur McGregor, celebrating the music of Phil Ochs
