On Thursday, April 28, due to the high winds, a tree fell on the corner of Wellington and Hamilton and struck Lauren, a 26 year-old staff member of Global Pet Foods. She has both legs broken in pieces below the knees and has undergone extensive surgery to both legs.
Lauren is like many of your part-timers – young and works really, really hard to pay her bills. We will be holding a fundraiser at The Elmdale on Saturday May 14. 100% of moneys raised will help Lauren through her rehab. Let's pull together and help one of our own. Karla from Global Pet Foods will be here to collect all the funds!

Ball and Chain, aka Jody Benjamin and Michael Ball, understand the beauty of a simple style, where melody and groove can carry the music all the way to your soul. When Michael gets going on the Cajun tunes with Jody on the triangle, you can almost taste the jambalaya. They were instrumental in bringing the first outdoor dance floor to the Ottawa Folk Festival. They have held a series of Cajun dance workshops that have introduced two-stepping joy to a whole lot of Ottawans.
For this concert the Hall will be setup a little differently. In addition to the concert seating, a space for dancing will be set-off by a few cafe tables. A southern dirt floor jook joint we ain't...but we're gonna have a hoot anyway.

Our next guest has performed in more than half of Virée Blues Boréale’s editions! Inspired by his heroes, Bill Monroe (the father of bluegrass), Hank Williams (the first white real bluesman), Slim Harpo, Jimmy Reed and Merle Travis, he’s all that America has in terms of Roots Music - a real maniac, a Bluegrass, Country-Swing, and Louisiana Blues fanatic. Mea culpa! It is true, we should have featured this renowned multi-instrumentalist who has performed together with most of the Greats on the Canadian and international Blues circuits a long time ago. The production of a soon-to-be-released first album gave rise to this invitation. And don’t worry, this seven year wait will be greatly rewarded, judging by the list of high level musicians who will be here to perform for us all with Pat ‘Sonny Boy Gumbo’ Loiselle and his Blues Combo on their first starring performance at Virée Blues Boréale.
Born in Montreal, little Pat Loiselle was charmed by the mystic sounds of the Blues guitar, after hearing the legendary Lucille, in the hands of the Master, Mr. B.B King and by the spellbinding sound of the harmonica of Little Walter. For the past 20 years, he’s been involved in the Canadian Blues scene. The list of stars he has performed with is almost endless; be it as singer, on guitar, on harmonica, mandolin, banjo, on dobro or lap-steel, this multi-talented virtuoso always solidly backed them up.
His band, Pat Loiselle & His Blues Combo has been very impressive as openers at major shows by Robert Lockwood Jr, Magic Slim, Junior Watson, Dutch Mason, to name only a few! The band features keyboardist Peter M (also the keyboardist for Stephen Barry and Ray Bonneville), bassist Carl Rufh (also a member of BluesVille Express and who played with Jimmy James), and John McColgan on drums (an ex-member of the Stephen Barry Band, who also played with Jimmy James and Michel Pagliaro).
Pat Loiselle wanted more for HIS show at Viree Blues Boreale! So, for the occasion, he invited one of his good friends, a native of Chicago, Craig Miller, aka “Doctor Zhicago”, the leader of BluesVille Express who also can display a highly impressive expertise and has been performing with leading contemporary Blues groups to join him.

For 33 years Morgan Davis has played the blues in Canada from Victoria, BC to St. John’s, Newfoundland, as well as Europe and the US. Morgan writes the songs, drives the truck, sets up the gear and performs traditional and original Blues. His venues range from 30 seat coffee houses in the BC interior and Annapolis Valley to huge folk and blues festivals, performing for crowds of thousands. Playing with a band for the first 25 years of his career, recent years have seen Davis make a successful transition to performing as a solo artist. During his years on the road, Morgan perfected his repertoire of Blues classics, songs that figure prominently in his performances today. His style is taut and tough, and relies on intensity rather than speed and pyrotechnics to make its point. Morgan Davis’ passion for the Blues has never wavered ... and he fully expects to be on the road for the rest of his life.

His latest release, “Bluesland” is an intense collection of rock, folk and country, soaked with an electric blues sound that gets deep into your pores. Recorded 'live off the floor' in 3 days in April 2010 at Beta Sound Recorders in Edmonton, and marks a milestone in Bourne's career, collaborating with his son Pat Bourne, who plays electric lead guitar, and his daughter Emily Bourne, who painted some of the original artwork for the album. In addition to Bill's acoustic guitar and vocals, and his son's lead, The Free Radio Band features Pa Joe on electric smooth jazz guitar (African Guitar Summit), Moses Gregg on bass (The Swiftys) and Miguel Ferrer on drums (Santiago, Chile).
Americana best describes the music of String Bone, a project born of the songwriting talents of Stratford resident Barry James Payne. A mix of all of the North American roots music that has been so prominent since the turn of the century (last century that is) ... Payne is a seasoned writer and story teller. He paints portraits with his words, and the various musicians involved help Payne change the colour of his pallet from emotional folk and country ballads to uptempo country-rock and bluesy, smoky, jazzy grooves.

When Louisiana's Johnny Sansone was invited to play at the Harvest Jazz and Blues festival in Fredericton last fall, he immediately called up his old friend from Halifax, Joe Murphy, and asked him to bring along his musical mates - The Water Street Blues Band. That led to a rollicking night of sweet blues, Cajun classics and some zydeco stompers. They played to a full tent of fans who were ready to party from the first beat.

Dave Babcock is one of Edmonton's musical gems and a force on the city's music scene. Session player, vocalist, and band leader, Dave's ability to blend jazz, hip-hop, house, funk and Latin music into his own contemporary style places him in a league all his own. He has played with Colin James, Long John Baldry, Jay McShann, Amos Garrett, k.d. lang, Doug Reilly, Duke Robillard, among other greats. In 2010, Dave gathered together some friends old and new, and released 'Jump To It', an album inspired by Kansas City jump blues and West Coast jazz. This CD release concert featured special guest, guitar maestro and mentor Amos Garrett.

We are pleased to announce the launch of the Sweet Beaver website, including videos of all those that performed in the 2011 FAI edition of the Beaver Suite.
February 18-20, 2011 many Canadian artists participated in the Folk Alliance conference in Memphis, TN. A number of those artists showcased in the Sweet Beaver Suite.
The website: http://www.sweetbeaver.com features videos of all the artists who performed this year. The videos include a built-in direct link to the artists’ iTunes allowing viewers to easily purchase the music directly from the video. In support of these artists please spread the word about the sweetbeaver.com site.
The showcase, held in what its organizers call the Sweet Beaver Suite (a bilingual salute to the iconic Canadian animal), featured artists from almost every part of Canada, from the North West Territories to Newfoundland and represented a wide range of music. Fourteen singers or bands are from Ontario, seven from Atlantic Canada, five from the Prairie provinces, two from Quebec and one each from the North West Territories and British Columbia. Each year we include a small number of International performers as well.
While putting the site together we¹ve reminisced about past Beaver Suite performers and events. The showcase event in 2011 in Memphis was its 8th incarnation. Begun in Montreal in 2005 by Shawna Cooper and Richard Flohil, it was done a second time by Shawna in Austin in 2006. In those days we were truly guerrilla, unsanctioned. Now fully integrated into the event we have also gladly collaborated with Folk Music Canada and The Provincial Music Industry Associations and Roots Music Canada in support of the Canadian artists at Folk Alliance.
