SINGING THE BLUES FOR ETHEL
*******************************************************
Singing the Blues for Ethel
3rd Annual Ethel Bruneau Tribute
Le National, 1220 Ste. Catherine E., Montreal QC
Sunday, June 6; 2 pm – 5 pm
The third annual “Singing the Blues for Ethel Show” is bigger and better! Due to the overwhelming success of the previous years, this year’s show is being held in a bigger venue, the prestigious “Le National” in the heart of the city. This will be a daytime show for all ages.
Ethel Mae Waterman Bruneau, Harlem-born professional dancer and instructor, graduated from the New York City High School of the Performing Arts. She arrived here in 1953 as part of the Cab Calloway Revue. That Montreal engagement was supposed to last three weeks, but Ethel never left. She went on to earn a Diploma in Early Childhood Studies from McGill University and became a nursery school teacher.
A Montreal legend, Ethel popularized Black Rhythm Tap, known as hoofin', in the city. She has preserved this hand-me-down dance form and is one of only two people now teaching it in Canada. She danced with Bill "Mr. Bojangles," the godfather of tap, and was among the first Black children to perform at Carnegie Hall and on the Ed Sullivan Show.
Ethel was at one time the MC at Rock-head's Paradise and also traveled with Pearl Bailey's Big Review in 1959-60. She has taught children at elementary schools in Beaconsfield and Baie D'Urfé and adults at the West Island Dance Centre, St. John the Baptist Church in Pointe Claire and the École de Ballet Nouveau Siècle. Her students range in age from 2 to 72. "You're never too young and never too old."
An example of staunch determination, Ethel mortgaged her home to fund classes for her students. "A student's lack of money has never deterred me from teaching those interested in learning to dance." In return, she asks only for their desire to dance, their undivided attention and their dancing feet. Since 1995, Mrs. Bruneau has conducted workshops that have brought Montreal such tap dance masters as Diane Walker and Van the Man Porter, who have lent their talent and expertise to children who would not otherwise have such opportunities. This was no easy feat, for Ethel has often used money from her own pocket to help fund these ventures. The most recent example was The Montreal Tap Dance Society, through which she handed out 40 student scholarships. This is not unusual, she feels. "You have to give in order to receive. It is not always about the money."
Over the many years, Ethel has received numerous awards and acknowledgements, including the Rosetti Lifetime Achievement Award and the Martin Luther King Award in Dance Sounds of Blackness. She has been featured in local newspapers and has made numerous radio and television appearances.
From the beginning this has been about helping Ethel raise money to continue exposing underprivileged children to music and dance. This year you will actually be able to watch the children that Ethel helps, as well as bringing your own children to meet the tap dancing legend.
Another great addition to the show this year is a blues band from the Fine Arts Core Education (F.A.C.E) School. Apart from the highly acclaimed FACE Blues Band this year’s lineup will include the jazzy, bluesy, sexy sounds of Carolyn-Fe and her band, the hard rocking blues of “Ain’t Done Yet”, dance numbers by the students of the “Ethel Bruneau School of Dance” and of course the lady herself, Ethel Bruneau, backed by “The Miss Swing Band”
Despite suffering a heart attack that lead to double bypass surgery, Ethel says she would perform at this year’s show “even if they have to wheel me up there in a wheelchair!”

Mr. Something Something
Rainbow, 76 Murray Street
Saturday, June 12 @ 10 pm
Mr. Something Something represents six years of composing, performing, risk-taking, improving and ultimately mobilizing the original vision of founding members Larry Graves [drums/percussion] and John MacLean [saxophone/voice]. Twenty years of playing, studying and traveling passed before these two childhood friends settled on the unbeatable dance rhythms of Nigeria, Senegal, Mali and Ghana as the most natural gathering place for the elements that would ultimately make up the Mr. Something Something sound.
Western instruments and concepts of improvisation are explored and layered over what used to be called Afrobeat; but the term strains to contain the innovations happening in the rhythm section at every show. It also fails to express in fiery-enough terms the imaginative solo work of respected jazz guitarist Paul MacDougall. Liam Smith dependably delivers basslines designed to induce and sustain a state of ecstatic dancing. And there is always inspiration to be drawn from mesmerizing on-stage dancer/choreographer Jennifer Dallas. The horn section strikes with power and uplifts with melody. And above it all, acting as a lightning rod, is the lyric statement of the case for change and consciousness, passionately delivered by electrifying frontman Johan Hultqvist.
Over the last five years the band has toured relentlessly in Canada, playing more than 500 shows, including appearances at many folk festivals and most major jazz festivals from coast to coast. Aside from wildly energized and unpredictable live shows, the band is becoming increasingly well-known for its green politics and environmental activism. The group did a number of “eco-dates” in 2007, playing a wind-powered show and performing in such unconventional venues as organic farms and food co-ops to highlight communities that are trying to minimize their ecological footprints.

Al Wood & the Woodsmen
Opening act Big Wheel & the Spokes
Irene’s Pub, 885 Bank Street
Friday, June 18 @ 9:30 pm
Al Wood is a multi-talented performer and songwriter with a deep reverence for the blues and traditionally-based roots music. Born in Sault Ste. Marie ON, Al’s father first taught him how to pick out old country tunes on the harmonica. Now a virtuoso harmonica player, talented guitar stylist, and golden-throated singer, Al lives in Ottawa and Highway 17 is more than a song; it’s a road well-traveled.
Al Wood’s heart-on-the-sleeve vocals, harmonica-playing and guitar work create a powerful potion on stage and in the studio. Backed by the talented Woodsmen, the new and original “Mood Swingin’ Blues” is an emotional Ferris wheel ride where everything goes, everything grooves and even the “hurtin’ songs” make you feel good. Thirteen full-band songs, all penned by Al Wood, span the highest and the lowest ranges of human emotion, weaving together diverse forms of blues and related styles with a unique originality that defies cliché and elevates the soul the way only music can. Also lyrically rich and full of imagery, Wood’s songs take us down shiny neon-lit streets, into a hot crowded jazz club, or on an enchanted jaunt through a fairytale countryside.

Coco Montoya
Rainbow, 76 Murray Street
Wednesday, June 30 @ 9:45 pm
Over the course of his 30-year career, guitarist and vocalist Coco Montoya's explosive guitar playing and soul-driven voice have propelled him to the upper reaches of the blues-rock world. From his early days as a drummer to his current status as one of the top-drawing guitarists and vocalists on the blues-rock scene, Montoya has forged his reputation through years of hard work and constant touring. And it all started with a chance meeting in the mid-1970s with legendary bluesman Albert Collins, who offered Montoya a gig as his drummer. Albert took an immediate liking to Montoya, becoming his mentor and teaching his new protégé secrets of the Collins "icy hot" style of blues guitar. Five years later, John Mayall happened to catch Montoya at a jam session and was blown away. This led to Montoya's touring the world for ten years with the legendary Bluesbreakers. Since stepping out as a bandleader in 1993, Montoya has released four solo albums and has performed non-stop at clubs, concert halls and major festivals all over the world. At every show, fans' jaws dropped, and critics raved about Montoya's mind-bending guitar licks and impassioned vocals.
No stranger to Ottawa blues fans, Coco tours and plays over 200 shows a year. He’ll be at the Rainbow in support of his latest release, “I Want It All Back” on Ruf Records.

concert 2: Guy Bélanger, recorded at the Lion d'Or in Montreal
Over the last 20 years, Guy Bélanger has been one of Quebec's most active blues musicians, performing with the who's who of the blues world, everyone from Muddy Waters, Koko Taylor, Big Mama Thornton and James Cotton to the inimitable Nova Scotian Dutch Mason. He is also a film composer whose work for the film Gaz Bar Blues earned him a Jutra award for best soundtrack in 2004. In early 2009, he released a self-titled solo album blending folk and blues featuring his own songs and covers of Lyle Lovett and Quebec songwriter Marc Broussard. In this concert, recorded at The Lion D'or in Montreal he is joined by a crackerjack group of bluesmen from Quebec: Gilles Sioui on guitars and vocals, Andre Lachance on guitars, Karl Suprenant on bass, and Bernard Deslauriers on drums.

Concert 1: Keb' Mo', recorded at Koerner Hall in Toronto
Keb' Mo' has developed his own blues style; sometimes his songs have a relaxed approach, a la James Taylor, and other times he mixes the grit and funk with socially conscious lyrics. Keb' Mo' has been influenced heavily by country blues and his unique interpretation of the genre has won him multiple Grammy Awards. He was the first blues act to be booked into Toronto's new Koerner Hall and Canada Live was there to capture the magic from this singer, songwriter and guitarist as he gave the Koerner Hall acoustics a workout.
Canada Live broadcasts are on traditional radio, Monday to Friday, at 7-8 pm (eastern). Broadcasts can also be streamed live in every time zone from the Radio 2 website – http://www.cbc.ca/radio2 –concerts are archived for On-demand streaming on the Concerts on Demand part of the website for 1 year at http://www.cbc.ca/radio2/cod/
