MonkeyJunk with Andy J. Forest

Rainbow, 76 Murray Street

Friday & Saturday, April 9-10 @ 9:30 pm

Andy J Forest, harmonica & frattoir player, singer songwriter, has been playing harmonica and singing professionally since 1977. These recordings feature mostly Forest’s original songs. The latest CD “Real Stories: of Love Labor and Other Man Made Catastrophies” (on Slang Records) won "The Best of The Beat" Award for best Blues Cd of 2007 in New Orleans. After living in Europe for ten years he returned to his home New Orleans in 1991 where he plays in clubs yet frequently goes on tour in Europe and Canada. He has written scores of songs, one novel (Letter From Hell) and paints “outside” art, mostly of blues and jazz singers.

This weekend, Andy appears with Canada’s newest blues and roots band, MonkeyJunk. After placing 3rd in the IBC in Memphis in February 2009, they toured Canada and appeared at European festivals. In January they won five of the 6 Maple Blues Awards for which they were nominated and at the recent 10th Annual Independent Music Awards MonkeyJunk received the Indie Favourite Blues Artist/Group. They have also received a rare, for Canadians, Blues Music Award nomination for Best New Artist Debut.

Formed in late March 2008 in Ottawa, they play an original style of swamp boogie R&B, bedroom funk and love songs that will break your heart. MonkeyJunk is Tony D on guitar, slide guitar and vocals; Steve Marriner on vocals, guitar, baritone guitar and harmonica and Matt Sobb on drums, cymbals, percussion and background vocals. These three musicians apply a combined 56 years of experience in the music business to entertain in a raw and captivating manner you will not soon forget . . . see for yourself!

New Soul Cowboys featuring Anthony Gomes
Irene's Pub, 885 Bank Street
Tuesday, April 27 @ 9 pm; $10 cover

Saddle up with New Soul Cowboys as the rowdy Nashville power trio has arrived to lay down the law; to serve and uphold the virtues of Rock ‘n’ Roll. Singer/guitarist Anthony Gomes, bassist David Karns and
drummer Peter Lang have set out to leave their indelible mark on music by forging a brand all their own. The trio’s soul sonic force delivers the rough and tumble swagger of rock while having the audacity to
blend in the distinctive sounds of whiskey-soaked roadhouse Blues and southern-fried power Country. “If you haven’t heard,” Gomes proclaims, “there’s a new Sherriff in town.”

New Soul Cowboys describe their sound as Outlaw Rock ‘n’ Roll. “Anyone that is a musical badass has been an outlaw in their genre, living outside of conventional rules,” states Gomes. “We have created a sound that embodies the rebel spirit of musical outcasts like Led Zeppelin, Johnny Cash and Howlin’ Wolf. We’re here to take back Rock ‘n’ Roll,” the guitar-slinger boldly but unapologetically exclaims. “We are part of a new music revolution in rock. A place where bands know where the music came from, can really play their instruments, write their own songs and take no prisoners doing it. We couldn’t care less about American Idol, we’re here to take our music to the streets.”

Canada Live

Monday, April 5, 2010
Concert 2: Michael Kaeshammer, recorded at Glenn Gould Studio in Toronto
Although classically trained in Germany, Michael Kaeshammer fell in love with boogie-woogie piano at age 13. Michael has the ability to stir, or quiet, a large crowd using his piano skills and his sense of humour. But when Kaeshammer begins to boogie - look out because the joint will start jumping! Canada Live was there to capture all of the fun at Toronto's Glenn Gould Studio.

Hello! Many of you are aware of Roots Music Canada; we began operations in November of 2009, and currently exist as a blog that aims to put into context what (and who) is truly worth knowing about in Canadian roots music.

You may be interested in seeing some of our HD interview and performance videos. It's free, so why not? Here are some direct links to blues-related pieces we've produced. And if you like it, I encourage you to become a Facebook Fan at our page, http://facebook. com/rootsmusicca nada
