It's been a year and I'm here to tell you... no wait... to invite you to join us for another wonderful full day outdoor concert in the company of friends and family and acquaintances... under the big old trees... in front of a large yet intimate stage where the artists perform up close and personal. Not a bad seat in the house.
The musical lineup is extraordinary as always. Two-time JUNO winner DOMINIC MANCUSO GROUP (world music) returns with his world class players; NORAH DOOLEY (educator, author) is driving up from Boston to engage us encore une fois with her remarkable storytelling; STEVE PAYNE(guitarist extraordinaire, songwriter) is finishing up his Canadian tour with a solo acoustic performance before returning to the UK; MIKE BRANTON BAND (aka Trio In Residence) is back to take us on another soulful journey into the blues (guaranteed); and this year we're introducing an excellent local jazz trio, ON THE MARK, to start things off.
Once again, the music will be eclectic and world class; the food fabulous and plentiful; the atmosphere magical. We offer it all to you in support of World Peace and Environmental Awareness. We offer you eight hours of uninterrupted relaxation and entertainment and dinner. We welcome you to our home.

Westport is a beautiful historic town on the Rideau Waterway - a 90-minute drive from Ottawa, 45 minutes from Kingston.
This
year we celebrate our 15th Anniversary season - making BOTR one
of the longest running and best Blues Series in the country. We've put together
another fabulous Line-Up of some of Canada's best Blues
artists - nominees and winners of Juno Awards, Maple Blues Awards,
American Blues Music Award, Western Canadian Music Award and more - bringing
back some of the all time favourites who have played the Series over
the years plus a few great new ones.
Visit www.BluesOnTheRideau.ca for more more details including artists' Bios, LINKS to their websites and You Tubes.
Then check your calendars, make your choices and RESERVE NOW to be sure you don't miss out on the shows. This is particularly true if you want to STAY OVERNIGHT. All the rooms at The Cove; nearby B&Bs and the Westport Station Motel usually sell out in advance on BOTR nights.
The 2019/20 Season kicks off September 13
with the incredibly talented
HARRISON KENNEDY -
Juno Award and Maple Blues Award winner and American Blues Music Award nominee - coming with his red hot band from the Hammer!
You will note that there has been a SMALL INCREASE in the ticket price this year - from $65 pp to $70 pp (plus HST). This is the first price increase in 5 years and is necessary to cover the increased costs of just about everything - food, drink, staff, band and Sound Engineer fees, advertising, printing costs and more.
However, when you consider the quality of the meal, the venue, the ambiance and the incredible LIVE music on these nights and compare it to just about anything else this is still one of - if not THE - best entertainment value in eastern Ontario - make that the country!
Also note that there are 3 TWO NIGHT STAND shows this season - October, November and January - giving those who have difficulty in making the Friday night shows more chances to come out on Saturday nights!
And we've added a show in DECEMBER this year - December 13 with multiple Juno Award winners MONKEYJUNK. If you want a great place to have your Christmas Party next season this would be it! Book early!

Christone
‘Kingfish’ Ingram
Uxbridge
Music Hall, 16 Main Street South, Uxbridge ON
Thursday,
September 19 @ 8 pm; $60+ HST + fees
Once
a generation, a blues artist comes along who not only reminds mainstream
audiences how deeply satisfying and emotionally moving the best blues music can
be, but shakes the genre to its core. With both eyes on the future and the
blues in his blood, 20-year-old guitarist, vocalist and songwriter Christone ‘Kingfish’
Ingram is set to take the music world by storm with the long-awaited release of
his debut album, KINGFISH, on Alligator Records. Sprung from the same earth as
so many of the Delta blues masters, Kingfish comes bursting out of Clarksdale,
Mississippi, just ten miles from the legendary crossroads of Highways 61 and
49.

Music
By The Bay Live presents
Miss
Emily
Avalon
Lounge, Port Whitby Marina, 310 Watson Street West, Whitby ON
Friday,
October 4 @ 8 pm; $45 + HST + fees
In
the 1990s a 12-year-old Emily Fennell was making her way around Southern
Ontario, singing at county fairs and winning competition after competition. She
was literally finding her voice. While the other young vocalists were dazzling
crowds with standards like “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” or “I Will Always Love
You”, Emily was stunning judges and audiences into silent amazement with the
k.d.lang version of the Patsy Cline song “3 Cigarettes and an Ashtray”. That
song choice and her spellbinding performance of it, says almost all you need to
know about the woman who would become Miss Emily.
She is never predictable and always willing to take a risk. Her music spans genres, crosses barriers and creates bridges. Her voice soars to emotional heights and reaches down into the grittiness of the soul. Her performances are foot-stomping, heart-wrenching adventures in rhythm, blues, jazz and rock and roll. For 15 years Miss Emily has captivated listeners across Canada, the US and the United Kingdom with her unique combination of passion and talent.

Shawn Holt & the
Teardrops
St. Francis Centre, 78
Church Street, South Ajax ON
Friday, October 25 @
8 pm; $45 + HST + fees
Shawn Holt is the son
of blues legend Magic Slim. The high energy hard-driving sound of The Teardrops
is still alive and well with Holt, a chip off the old block, fronting his dad’s
band. Shawn’s booming vocals is more than a little reminiscent of his dad’s,
and his guitar playing while similar to Slim’s, exhibits a broader mix of
classic and contemporary influences. Shawn shows himself more than capable of
leading The Teardrops into a new era. The blues torch has been passed to another
generation of the blues.
Shawn started playing
the blues at the age of 17, when he went on the road with this father and
Slim’s brother, uncle Nick Holt, and The Teardrops. Shortly after that tour
with his father, Shawn realized his genetic destiny (all the Holt’s are
talented musicians) and formed his own band. He has been watching, learning,
and playing blues ever since.
Shawn Holt and The
Teardrops are winners for Best New Artist Debut – Daddy Told Me by the Blues
Foundation (BMA) 2014, and also won the 2014 Blues Blast Music Award for New
Artist Debut Album – “Daddy Told Me”.

One
of rocks best-kept secrets.
From
the age of sixteen, Philip started showing up and playing at blues jam nights
at Grossmans Tavern in downtown Toronto. It wasn’t long before he was winning
over admirers, including the legendary guitarist Jeff Healey, who invited
Philip to join his band. Over the next few years, Philip had his first
international tour experience with Healey, playing prestigious festivals and
stages worldwide.
After
a move to Los Angeles, Philip was invited to join Melissa Etheridge’s band following
an introduction by producer John Shanks. For the next several years, Philip
performed on Melissa Etheridge’s albums and was featured during her live concerts
where his cosmic performances left audiences stunned.
Philip’s
musical life hit a high point in 2013 with his unforgettable performance at
Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Festival at New York’s Madison Square Garden. “It was
a special experience that reinforced my love of music and commitment to honour
the musical integrity of my heroes,” Sayce says. “I’m going out there in the
studio and onstage to do my best and perform from my heart every time.”

Multi-award-winning
Australian artist Lloyd Spiegel returns to Canada delivering one of the most
unique solo concert experiences in the world. Blending jaw-dropping
guitar chops with a commanding voice, powerful songwriting, storytelling and
comedy, it’s no wonder that he’s described as an “Oz Roots and Blues Icon”
by Rolling Stone Australia.
Spiegel is a trail blazer in his field and one of his country's most recognized guitarists, recently being named in Australian Guitar Magazine's list of the 50 greatest Australian guitarists of all time. “A guitarist almost without peer, Spiegel deconstructs how the blues guitar is supposed to operate, makes sweet love to it, then kicks it out the back door.” Australian Guitar Player Magazine

Harpdog
Brown
Irene’s
Pub, 885 Bank Street
Friday,
October 18 @ 9:30 pml $20 at the door
Harpdog
Brown has grown a reputation as a real-deal purveyor of classic electric blues.
Think of the old Chess Records and Sun Records of the late ‘40s and early ‘50s.
These days he’s been touring more and more as Harpdog Brown & the Uptown
Blues Band - a vintage New Orleans Blues sound featuring, piano, clarinet/sax,
upright-bass and drums. Still a vintage vibe, just a different vintage! This
music will move you! They perform mostly originals, yet they often include
great songs of the masters from that era. Think Louis Jordan, Satchmo, Sonny
Boy Williamson, Wynonie Harris, even Duke Ellington. Audiences are raving about
this new show!
He’s been called a Blues Evangelist, and that’s a very fitting moniker. "I speak the blues like it's the truth, and it is”, he was recently quoted. "I do feel like I'm a servant of the people. A missionary if you will. Music can heal people if they pay attention to the messages in these songs.” He delivers those messages using the vintage sound whether it be with his lowdown classic blues band the Travelin’ Blues Show or with his new Uptown Blues Band. Harpdog says "Blues has a healing power. It's a beautiful celebration of our perfectly flawed lives. We help people forget about their issues of the moment and then they might just realize that we all have our issues, and that's OK."
Harpdog Brown is a gifted vocalist and an imaginative harmonica player. Piano man Dave Webb has been working with Harpdog over the years and they share an intuition that only comes with many hours and miles shared on and off stage. Billy Joe Abbott learned his craft first-hand from some of the greatest Clarinetists in New Orleans. Riley Bartlett is the newest and youngest member on Trumpet from Winnipeg and he's awesome! Drummer extraordinaire Rick Jacobson will be laying down the groove.
Harpdog has won three consecutive Maple Blues Awards for Harmonica Player of the Year (2014/2015/2016), the Fraser Valley Music Award, has three consecutive Western Canadian Music Awards Nominations, a Juno Nomination and is the only Canadian to win the coveted Muddy Award. In 2016, he was nominated for 3 Maple Blues Awards (Harmonica Player, Male Vocalist and Album of the Year) for his latest release “Travelin’ With The Blues”.
“Travelin' With The Blues”, released in 2016, is still sitting in the top roots and blues charts and follows his Top 20 charting 2014 release “What It Is” (Roots Music Report International Blues Albums).
Get off the couch and some see some seriously vintage blues that’s lots of fun!

Myles
Goodwyn
Neat
Coffee Shop, 1715 Calabogie Road, Burnstown ON
Friday,
October 25 @ 8 pm; $60
Singer,
guitarist, writer, producer and leader of the band April Wine, Myles Goodwyn’s
passion and drive shaped and directed the group from its earliest beginnings.
He is the only remaining original member of the group since the inception of
April Wine in 1969. Goodwyn grew up poor and is the classic “small-town kid
makes good” success story. As a young teen, Goodwyn honed his skills, playing
in bands such as East Gate Sanctuary and Woody’s Termites. From the very
beginning, Goodwyn plotted the course of the band. His unique but classic rock
voice gives April Wine a distinct and immediately recognizable sound. Ranging
from hard rock classics to soulful ballads, his vocal range and style can
really grab a hold of you. His songwriting skills are prolific.
He has penned virtually every April Wine song. He has a knack with words and seems to have an ability to write a catchy tune at will. Through the ups and downs and changing faces of the band, the one thing that has remained constant is Myles Goodwyn. Even today and with their latest release and shift in direction, his voice is as strong and apparent as ever.
Now in its fourth decade, April Wine continues to charge ahead as one of Canada’s very best rock bands. And as far as rock history goes, Myles Goodwyn is already a living legend (especially in the annals of Canadian rock history), being known as one of the all-time greats.
On top of all the old classics that we all know and love, Myles will showcase some of his tunes from his new album as well. Tickets on sale now, limited dinner reservations available before the show!

For those who live south of the city, OBS member
Bob Cavan notes that the National Public Radio (NPR) radio signal at 89.5 FM in
Canton NY comes in pretty strong in Manotick. Bob recommends two shows in particular.
Bob says “The Blue Note” Tuesdays 3 pm-5 pm, and “The Radio Bob Show” Wednesdays 3
pm-5 pm are both excellent shows – blues, ‘50s & ‘60s, rock &
roll, R&B.

Tuesdays,
7-9 pm
Re-broadcast Saturday 10 am – noon & Sunday
2-4 pm (all times EST)
It’s all about the Blues, Jazz and its derivatives
from around the globe and just around the corner. Songs rarely heard, from the very
first recordings all the way to indie artists who consciously push the envelope
to the next generation sounds of the genre; some older releases will be spun -
just because the album in old, doesn't mean it's forgotten, thus the "On
The Side" part of the show's title.
