BLUES CHALLENGE 2019

The
Ottawa Blues Society Road to Memphis Local Blues Challenge will hold both a
Solo/Duo and Band challenge this year and one winner from each category will be
chosen to represent the Ottawa Blues Society at the International Blues
Challenge in Memphis in January 2020.
The
qualifying rounds are scheduled for Wednesdays, April 10, 17 and 24, with the
finals scheduled for Friday, April 26. All events will take place at the
Overflow Brewing Company, 2477 Kaladar Avenue.
Deadline
for entries is Sunday March 24, 2019 @ 11:59 pm EST.
For
the purposes of the IBC, a Band is any act with three or more musicians. A
Solo/Duo act is any act with no more than two musicians. Both electric and
acoustic instruments are allowed in either category, and vocalists are counted
as musicians for the purpose of this competition.
At
the local competition, entrants will be judged using the same criteria as in
the
International
competition. Each entry will have 20-25 minutes to perform (to be confirmed
following close of entries) and will be given points based on Blues Content,
Originality, Vocals, Instrumental Talent, and Stage Presence.

Eligibility
Requirements: Entrants must be 2019 residents of the Ottawa/Gatineau area
(approx 100 km radius of Ottawa). Entrants must be over 19 years of age.
Entrants must be able to travel to the IBC in Memphis, January 28 to February
01, 2020. An individual may not compete in more than one act.
Entrants
will play one set; set length 20-25 minutes (to be confirmed following close of
entries). All songs presented MUST be Blues (electric or acoustic), Rock/
Blues, Jazz/Blues, Country Blues or Rhythm & Blues.
The
OBS will contribute financial support to cover a portion of travel and
accommodation expenses to Memphis, however the winner is responsible for all
travel and accommodation charges incurred in excess of the financial assistance
provided.
Each
entry must be accompanied by an entry fee ($25 for bands; $10 for solo or duo
acts) to help offset Road To Memphis costs. This entry fee may be submitted via
the OBS website using PayPal. (Click on STORE/Donations) The entry fee is
refundable ONLY if the event is cancelled.

After
completing all sections, return the form to the Ottawa Blues Society at
obsr2m2019@gmail.com by the deadline above.
Every
effort will be made to accommodate all applications that are received on time
and meet the established criteria. However, should it be required for any
reason deemed appropriate, the Ottawa Blues Society reserves the right to limit
the number of entrants in the competition and a pre-screening of the
applications received will be conducted based on sample music provided. The
results of the pre-screening are final. Should there be an insufficient number
of entries to run a reasonable competition or for any other reason deemed
appropriate, the Ottawa Blues Society reserves the right to cancel the event.

Duke Robillard is a Grammy nominated blues guitarist
and singer. Robillard was a founding member of blues and swing band Roomful
of Blues, a member of The Fabulous Thunderbirds (replacing Jimmie Vaughan) and has released over 30 albums under his own moniker. An
accomplished bluesman, Robillard has won a handful of Blues Music Awards over the
years, including Best Blues Guitarist four out of five years (2000, 2001, 2003,
2004) and most recently in 2016 for Best Acoustic Blues album of the year, The
Acoustic Blues of Duke Robillard.
He has also notched two Grammy nominations for
Best Traditional Blues Album, 2006’s Guitar Groove-A-Rama and 2009’s Stomp! The

improv magic you hear on JW-Jones’ 10th album, “Live”, is the spark that has
awakened new sonic frontiers for the veteran Maple Blues Award-winning Ottawa
bluesman.
As
he continues to evolve as one of Canada’s most versatile bluesmen, with one
foot in the terra firma of the traditional blues espoused by the likes of
Howlin’ Wolf sideman Hubert Sumlin and harmonica legend Charlie Musselwhite
(who both guested on Jones’ memorable Midnight Memphis Sun, recorded at the historic
Sun Studio) and blues contemporaries Robert Cray, for whom the JW-Jones band
has occasionally opened, he continues to challenge and raise his standards
through his recordings and the 130 dates on average yearly that he clocks in on
the road.
An
additional highlight is the inclusion of the JW-Jones showstopper – the 17-song
medley that rifles through snippets of classic guitar riffs backed by the energetic
support of 2018 Maple Blues Award Bassist of the Year Laura Greenberg and the inimitable
Will Laurin on drums. “It’s been a staple of our live show for years,”
says Jones. “People have been asking us to record it forever, so now we’ve
finally captured it for everyone to enjoy!”
And
everyone will enjoy “Live”, an album for the ages that captures the JW-Jones
lightning in a bottle.

Piano man Dave Webb has been working with Harpdog over the years and they share an intuition that only comes with many hours and miles shared on and off stage. Joseph Abbott (Clarinet) and Brandon Lin (Trombone) are the newest and youngest additions to the band. Rounding out the band is Rick Jacobson from the state of Washington on the tubs.

Like
so many African-American vocalists, Shirley Johnson started out singing in
church and then went on to embrace secular music. The Chicago resident, whose
influences range from Mahalia Jackson to Koko Taylor, Etta James, and Ruth
Brown, is a gritty, big-voiced blues singer who can also handle soul and
gospel. Although Johnson has spent much of her adult life in Chicago, the Windy
City is not her hometown; she was born in Franklin, VA and raised in Norfolk,
VA. Shirley came from a very religious family and was only six when she started
singing gospel in a church choir.

singer-songwriter, and veteran of the Canadian roots scene. A Saskatoon native
transplanted to the Niagara Region of Ontario, she’s the proud owner of a

style.
Among her most recent successes: being nominated for a 2018 Canadian Folk Music Award for Producer of the Year with her co-producer, Mark Lalama. his 19th album, “Miles to Go”, Colin James is getting back to the
blues. Wait a minute, you ask: hasn’t Colin James always played the blues?
Well, yes, but back when he was signed to his first record deal in 1988, his
producer—who’d worked with Ray Charles and Derek and the Dominoes—explicitly told
him not to play any blues, because the label expected a pop hit. When James
later made one of the biggest albums of his career—1993’s “Colin James and the
Little Big Band”, released years before the so-called “swing revival”—his label
hated it, as did critics and many fans before it went on to go triple platinum
in Canada. Then there was the acoustic blues album “National Stee”l in 1997,
made with Colin Linden, which was the first time James made a full-on blues album,
which landed him on folk festival bills alongside the likes of John Prine and
John Hiatt. It was an explicit embrace of the blues James had loved since the Regina-born
guitarist was 16 years old and was blown away by James Cotton at the Winnipeg
Folk Festival. A song that Cotton played that night, “One More Mile,” became
the title track to the new album: bookending it in electric and acoustic
versions.
It wasn’t until 2016’s “Blue Highways” that James found himself on a blues chart: the album spent 10 weeks at No. 1 on the Roots Music Report’s Blues Chart. It also landed him one of his biggest hits: “Riding in the Moonlight,” a Willie Dixon song that James once covered when busking in the streets and subways of Toronto and Montreal, landed on a Spotify playlist and garnered millions of streams.
When James set out to make “Blue Highways”, an album of blues covers recorded with his touring band, he always intended it to be the first of two installments. Now we have “Miles to Go”, in which James records nine new covers of his favourite artists (Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, Blind Willie Johnson, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Little Willie John, Robert Johnson, etc.) and adds two originals, ‘I Will Remain’ and ‘40 Light Years’. “Blues has always been a pass-it-forward kind of thing,” says James.
“It’s also surprisingly hard to write. You have to be careful how modern you get in your phrasing. Certain writers can write a song that sounds like it was done 40 years ago, but it’s deceptively hard.”
To be a blues musician is to always have a dialogue with the past. As with much blues music, it’s the performances on the original versions rather than the actual song that drew James to them. That said, what could he possibly bring to them in 2018? “You bring what you can,” he says. “If I feel like I’ve brought enough, then I put it out. I knocked a bunch of songs off this record when I realized that I can’t bring anything to them that isn’t there already. All my life I’ve tried to bring vitality to older songs. Hopefully, my dedication to it is what floats it over the mark. That’s a subjective thing; some people will always prefer the original. However, there’s always a group of people coming up to see me after a show who might say, “Oh, I never would have heard ‘One More Mile’ by James Cotton—nothing in my life would have pointed me there.”
