CKCU ANNUAL FUNDRAISING DRIVE
October 25 – November 27, 2019
****************************
CKCU needs your support now more than ever. The Student Choice Initiative (SCI), one of the changes in education from our current provincial government, invites students to opt-out of student fees. CKCU relies heavily on the generosity of Carleton students, who democratically established a student levy that supports the station, along with additional funding from listener pledges. This change places financial uncertainly on CKCU’s future so the funding drive period has been extended this year and the goal has been increased to $250,000.

CKCU has provided a strong voice for the community for 44 years. With more than 120 programs each week, all produced and presented by volunteers in more than a dozen languages, CKCU plays a key part in the development and success of Ottawa’s music and cultural community.

You can donate by phone (613-520-3920 during the funding drive) or pay securely online anytime at www.ckcufm.com/donate.

OTTAWA BLUES THIS WEEK is a proud supporter of CKCU and the OBTW donation is made in support of John Tackaberry’s Black & Blues show, which airs Sundays from 9-11 pm.

OSDS 20th Anniversary Dance
St-Joseph's Parish, 174 Wilbrod Street
Friday, November 15 @ 7:30 pm

Shaw Centre, 55 Colonel By Drive
Saturday, November 16 @ 7:30 pm

From Jody Glanzer:
Swing dancers will be gathering to celebrate the OSDS' 20th Anniversary in the best way, which is to move and dance together.

OSDS dances host beginner lessons and this time is no exception.
As a bit of a heads up, if you are one to be intimidated easily, perhaps think of this week as a warm-up and an unusual circumstance.
Try the more nurturing environment that is their Friday dances most other weeks for learning to dance.

That being said, for jazz and all music lovers, this should be one hell of a show!
It will be a feast for your eyes on and ears. It should be absolutely magical.

Gordon Webster and his band are in high demand, traveling the world playing music for swing dancers in different formats and styles.
I'd recommend listening to his music on his CDs and videos and they're good, really good. Many of the dancers have them and all the DJs love them.
Then come to the live show. There is absolutely NOTHING like it. Watching the relationship the musicians and the dancers have together is amazing.
It is like being selectively being transported back in time but with diversity, inclusivity and just the joyous parts.

See you there!

HOROJO Trio
IBC Fundraiser
Overflow Brewing Company, 2477 Kaladar Avenue
Friday, November 15

HOROJO Trio is a soul rockin’ rhythm & blues act that features drummer Jamie Holmes, singer/keyboardist Jeff Rogers, and guitarist/singer JW-Jones. Jeff is known as one of the hardest working artists in the nation’s capital clocking over 250 shows per year. The Ottawa Citizen says “his voice practically bowls you over with intensity, as sweet, rich and gooey as molasses in a heatwave”, while Nick Krewen (Globe & Mail, Grammy.com, Billboard) calls JUNO nominee JW-Jones “a frequent resident of Billboard’s Top 10 Blues charts and roots radio favourite”. Jamie is one of the most versatile drummers in the country and has toured throughout North America and Europe and recorded in Nashville with Grammy winning producer Tom Hambridge. The trio came together organically from a chance jam session after a corporate event that was so inspired that it left the audience and the musicians wanting more. Even before their first gig, they had already been called an Ottawa “super group”, and while they admit the band name (derived from the first two letters of each of the members’ last names) is unusual, the future certainly looks bright for the exceptional HOROJO Trio.

Blues On The Rideau presents
Samantha Martin & Delta Sugar ***SOLD OUT***
The Cove Inn, Westport ON
Saturday, November 16, 7-11 pm; $70
(buffet dinner, dancing & door prizes included)
Proceeds to Friends of Foley Mountain

Samantha Martin and her band Delta Sugar played BOTR at The Cove for the first time last October and blew the doors off the place. That’s why they’ve been invited back this season. Their debut CD “Send The Nightingale” received major international airplay when it came out in 2015 and earned her 4 Maple Blues Award nominations (she was nominated for another 4 this past year – and a JUNO Award). Samantha’s dynamic Blues/Soul/Gospel voice reminds you of some of the greats – Janis Joplin, Big Mama Thornton and Koko Taylor all come to mind. She’s complemented beautifully by her two great female co-singers – Sherie Marshall and Mwansa Mwansa with a full rhythm section behind them lead by guitarist Michael McCallum. Their latest record “Run To Me” released in April 2018 took an even larger leap forward with special guests Steve Marriner and Suzie Vinnick. It immediately went to #1 on the Roots Music Chart, #14 on the U.S Blues chart and received major airplay around the world. Since then they’ve performed at major festivals across Canada and did a 10 country/75 show tour of Europe last year where they were so well received they’re headed back again this year.

Angel Forrest – CD Release “Hell Bent With Grace”
Gainsbourg, 9 rue Abry, Gatineau QC
Saturday, November 16 @ 8 pm

Le Gainsbourg is proud to present the six-time Maple Blues Awards female vocalist of the year, Angel Forrest. Angel Forrest will be releasing her 10th album on November 1, and le Bistro Gainsbourg is the third stop on her release tour. The new album, titled “Hell Bent With Grace”, gives the perspective of an aging woman in the public eye and her lessons learned. Musically, the album reflects Angel’s rock influences, but she stays true to her country and blues roots, meaning that the songs still have this heartfelt, raw groove, which has always made the singer’s success.

In 1988, Angel Forrest began a musical career which spans over three decades … to date. The Montreal artist was named Female Vocalist of the Year six straight times by the Toronto Blues Society between 2013 and 2018. Never limited to blues, this 2018 Memphis International Blues Challenge Finalist sings in the whole country, blues and rock spectrum.

Angel Forrest will be appearing in full band formation at Bistro Gainsbourg including guitar virtuoso Ricky Paquette, a Gatineau native that has been highly visible on the Canadian rock and blues circuits with Angel and Martin Deschamps, among others.

Well-priced accommodation available at The Cove, nearby B&Bs and motel
Westport is a beautiful historic town on the Rideau Waterway - a 90-minute drive from Ottawa, 45 minutes from Kingston.

This year we celebrate our 15th Anniversary season - making BOTR one of the longest running and best Blues Series in the country. We've put together another fabulous Line-Up of some of Canada's best Blues artists - nominees and winners of Juno Awards, Maple Blues Awards, American Blues Music Award, Western Canadian Music Award and more - bringing back some of the all time favourites who have played the Series over the years plus a few great new ones.

Visit www.BluesOnTheRideau.ca for more more details including artists' Bios, LINKS to their websites and You Tubes.

Then check your calendars, make your choices and RESERVE NOW to be sure you don't miss out on the shows. This is particularly true if you want to STAY OVERNIGHT. All the rooms at The Cove; nearby B&Bs and the Westport Station Motel usually sell out in advance on BOTR nights.

You will note that there has been a
SMALL INCREASE in the ticket price this year - from $65 pp to $70 pp (plus HST). This is the first price increase in 5 years and is necessary to cover the increased costs of just about everything - food, drink, staff, band and Sound Engineer fees, advertising, printing costs and more.

However, when you consider the quality of the meal, the venue, the ambiance and the incredible LIVE music on these nights and compare it to just about anything else this is still one of - if not THE - best entertainment value in eastern Ontario - make that the country!

Also note that there are
2 TWO NIGHT STAND shows this season – October and January - giving those who have difficulty in making the Friday night shows more chances to come out on Saturday nights!

And we've
added a show in DECEMBER this year - December 13 with multiple Juno Award winners MONKEYJUNK. If you want a great place to have your Christmas Party this would be it! Book early!

Chicago Plays The Stones
16 Main Street S., Uxbridge ON
Friday, November 29 @ 8 pm; advance tickets $70 + HST + fees

Chicago guitar-slinger and vocalist, Ronnie Baker Brooks and Chicago harmonica master and vocalist Billy Branch, among today’s foremost inheritors of the Chicago blues tradition and keepers of the flame, unite live on-stage to give the songs of the Rolling Stones a remarkable rebirth. Brooks and Branch strip those rock songs down to their Chicago blues essence and bring the songs of Jagger-Richards back to their spiritual home and their point of origin.

There is no more seminal association in the history of rock and pop music than those ties that bind Chicago’s electric blues with the Rolling Stones. They modeled their sound on the gritty, urban electrified and amplified music of Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Jimmy Reed, Little Walter and other Chicago blues pioneers. Through the lens of this musical kinship that has changed modern popular music and culture across the globe, CHICAGO PLAYS THE STONES takes audiences on a powerful musical journey that will delight and thrill lovers of the blues, fans of The Rolling Stones, and general music audiences alike.

The Concert: CHICAGO PLAYS THE STONES is an exhilarating, high-energy live stage performance that presents its audience with classic Rolling Stones songs arranged in the Chicago blues styles ranging from the early-traditional to modern- contemporary.
Performances also include songs from the 1940s Mississippi Delta by a young Muddy Waters up through the ground-breaking electrification of the country blues in Chicago by Waters and other pioneering Windy City blues artists. These blues sounds that traveled from the deep south up north to Chicago were the musical DNA that put the young Brits squarely on the path to become The Rolling Stones, the group that would eventually, with the Chicago blues at it core, have a lasting effect on rock and pop music.

Imagine the classic Rolling Stones songs as played by their Chicago blues heroes of the Golden Age such as Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Little Walter, Jimmy Reed, Willie Dixon or Sonny Boy Williamson. What would those songs sound like? Would they sound retro? Contemporary? Or, something new?

We invite you to a unique concert event featuring today’s greatest Chicago blues artists to discover the answer to those questions. We invite you to travel back to the future to experience CHICAGO PLAYS THE STONES.

Music By The Bay Live presents
The Last Waltz – A Musical Celebration of the Band
16 Main Street S., Uxbridge ON
Saturday, November 30 @ 8 pm; advance tickets $65 + HST + fees

By popular demand, one of Ontario’s most talked about acts returns to Music by the Bay Live. This all-star Canadian cast of award-winning blues and roots musicians, under the direction of Juno award winning producer and musical director, Lance Anderson, will be playing The Uxbridge Music Hall on November 30, celebrating the 43rd Anniversary of THE BAND’s last concert in 1976 and The BAND’s amazing contribution to our shared Canadian musical heritage.

This is an all-star line-up, featuring Jerome Levon Avis (Levon Helm’s godson), on drums and vocals with special guests and a nine-piece band led by Maple Blues 2014 ‘Keyboardist of the Year’ Lance Anderson. The performance will recreate the atmosphere of The Band’s final concert, which was captured in Martin Scorcese’s award-winning concert film, The Last Waltz.

On the American Thanksgiving of 1976 at San Francisco’s Winterland Ballroom, The BAND performed what they called their “Last Waltz,” and invited many of their friends to join in the celebration. These friends included Bob Dylan, Ronnie Hawkins, Van Morrison, and Canadians Neil Young and Joni Mitchell and others who performed with The Band on this special night.

In this homage to The Last Waltz, Anderson’s special guests will perform the songs played and sung by these guest artists at the memorable 1976 concert.  Backed by a 9-piece band that includes Jerome Levon Avis, Terry Blersh on guitar, Dennis Pinhorn (The Hawks) on bass, Rob Gusevs (Blood, Sweat and Tears) on organ and Anderson (Joint Chiefs of Soul) on piano and vocals, this is a group of seasoned veterans who love the music. Anderson’s band also features a stellar four-piece horn section including David Dunlop (Boss Brass) on trumpet, Gord Meyers (Blood, Sweat and Tears) on trombone and tuba, Chris Murphy (The Maple Blues Band) on tenor sax and Simon Wallis (Lighthouse) on baritone sax. An all-star band!

The Band is a Canadian national treasure, with four members of the legendary roots music group originally from southern Ontario. In the 1960s, they were initially brought together as “The Hawks” by Ronnie Hawkins and later gained international recognition as Bob Dylan’s band on his ground-breaking electric tours. This 120 minute performance of The Last Waltz includes a wide selection of fan favourites, such as The Band’s ‘The Weight’, ’The Night They Drove Ol’ Dixie Down’, ‘Up On Cripple Creek’, ‘Life is a Carnival’, ‘The Shape I’m In’, ‘Rag Mama Rag’, ‘It Makes No Difference’, ‘Ophelia’ and many more.
Please note, artists performing subject to change.

Colin Linden
Neat Coffee Shop, Burnstown ON
Thursday, November 21 @ 8 pm; $35

Born in Toronto, Canada, and raised in White Plains, New York, Colin Linden returned to Canada in 1970. He was already a guitar prodigy at 11 years old, and when most kids that age are playing sports, Colin was meeting and being mentored by one of his musical heroes, the great bluesman Howlin’ Wolf, which helped set the youngster on a course to pursue the sounds of his dreams. That encounter helped fuel a career that has featured his work on literally hundreds of albums. At last count, the total of recordings on which he has played approaches 400, while over 100 albums bear the “Produced by Colin Linden” credit.

Colin Linden is a genuine renaissance man of roots music. He’s a singer and songwriter of great skill, an in-demand and prolific record producer, a sideman to the stars as guitarist for the likes of Bruce Cockburn, Emmylou Harris, Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, and, for the past decade-plus, a member of the highly successful trio, Blackie and the Rodeo Kings. His well-stocked trophy case includes eight JUNO Awards, multiple Maple Blues Awards, and a Toronto Arts Award. He has a well-deserved reputation as a slide guitar virtuoso of true originality and his riveting slide work can be heard both on albums from numerous artists as well as on his own sizeable solo catalogue.

Samantha Martin & Delta Sugar
Neat Coffee Shop, 1715 Calabogie Road, Burnstown ON
Friday, November 22 @ 8 pm; $42.50

Samantha Martin is the lead singer, songwriter and focal point of the group. A dynamic front woman, she possesses a stunning voice that is capable of summoning up tidal waves of spine-tingling emotion in one instance while delicately bringing out the nuances of a gut-wrenching lyric in the next. A torrid force of nature, night after night she takes audiences to emotional peaks while leaving them stunned with her sheer pin-you-against-the-wall power.
While Martin is a powerhouse unto herself, the vocal alchemy of Delta Sugar is not the work of a single talent. In combination with what she likes to term her “co-vocalists,” Sherie Marshall and Mwansa Mwansa, the vocal blend Delta Sugar produces is pure, unadulterated gospel-tinged, neuron-tingling magic where the sum is even richer than the already soul-melting parts.

Emily Burgess & The Emburys were named “Best New Group” at The Maple Blues Awards in 2019. At the heart of this Peterborough, Ontario trio is creative songwriting, harmonies, and a group sound that is as dynamic as it is inventive.

Emily Burgess (guitar/vocals), and Marcus Browne (drums/vocals) have steered the ship of this mighty little group since 2017, with Dawson McManus joining on bass in 2019. In very short order, the band has travelled every direction, criss-crossing the continent from Electric City, WA to Hubbards, NS, from Thunder Bay, ON to Atlanta, GA, wowing audiences with their big sound and unassuming nature.

The trio is guided, influenced, and inspired by renowned American/Canadian rockers, The Weber Brothers, who produced Burgess’ first album “Are We in Love?”. They released their new 11-track album, “Never-Ending Fling” in October 2019.

Ghost Town Blues Band
Irene’s Pub, 885 Bank Street
Wednesday, December 11; 8 pm – 11:30 pm; $15

Not your grandpa’s blues band, Ghost Town Blues Band’s live show has been captivating audiences in the U.S., Canada and Europe with their "second-line horn entrance", cigar box guitars and electric push brooms to Allman Brothers style jams and even a hip-hop trombone player. The band's stage show and energy is unparalleled and has been called the best new live blues show in the world.

Horns, harmonies and homegrown instruments combined with an energetic and roots rich festival set makes Ghost Town Blues Band one of the “must see live bands on the festival scene today.” Both Andrew McNeill behind the drums and Matt Karner on the bass guitar are a punishing rhythm section behind multi-instrumentalist/frontman Matt Isbell with raunchy cigar box guitar licks and raspy "Dr. John-like, whiskey and gravel-soaked vocals." With the addition of Trombonist Suavo Jones, Cedric Taylor on B3 and Taylor Orr on lead guitar, the grooves go from fresh to funky as the band gains more notoriety in the blues festival and jam circuit. Ghost Town Blues Band has performed all across US and Canada at over 100+ festivals and will perform more than a half-dozen international tours in Canada and Europe in 2019.

Dueling Pianos
Meridian Centrepointe Theatre,
Friday, December 13 @ 8 pm; tickets $22 - $24

Hot off the heels of their sell-out shows here at Meridian Theatres at Centrepointe, Dueling Pianos are back with another studio show. Don’t miss out on Tyler Kealey and Dave Kalil playing the ivory keys to some of your favourite songs, along with Todd Huckabone on the guitar.

Each unique show features an endless series of classic hits spanning decades of music. Playing a blend of requests from the audience, blistering guitar and piano solos, three-part harmonies, and random impromptu comedic moments, their show has won over the crowds for which they perform time after time.

Dave has been entertaining audiences across Canada since 1976 as a solo piano player and singer, but has had the most fun this past decade playing with – or against – singer-songwriter and fellow pianist Tyler. The two claim influences from musicians like Supertramp and the Eagles, from Billy Joel to the Beatles. NAC Presents
Christmas with Matt Andersen & friends
NAC Southam Hall
Friday, December 20 @ 8 pm; tickets start at $35

The Festival of Small Halls and NAC Presents are happy to bring back the wildly popular Christmas with Matt Andersen. Join us for holiday favourites and even some surprises!

Recorded live off the floor in Nashville, Tennessee, celebrated songwriter Matt Andersen’s tenth album, “Halfway Home by Morning”, collects all the essential elements for a down-home ramble. Over its lucky 13 tracks, he explores every facet of his sound—sweat-soaked soul, incendiary rhythm and blues, heartbroken folk, and gritty Americana—in the Southern Ground studio, the same spot that legends like Neil Young, Emmylou Harris, and Jerry Lee Lewis recorded. The album is as honest and compromise free as anything he’s ever done.
The native New Brunswicker has proven time and time again, on stages everywhere from clubs to theatres, that he’s the genuine article. Andersen is a powerhouse performer with a giant, soul-filled voice and commanding stage presence, and has built a formidable following the old-fashioned way: touring worldwide and letting his stunned audiences and new devotees spread the good word of his righteous tunes all over.
