Amanda Rheaume & Miss Emily
Overflow Brewing Company, 2477 Kaladar Avenue
Thursday, August 8 @ 8 pm

AMANDA RHEAUME - unique & soulful blend of AMERICANA ROOTS pop
An engaging performer, Rheaume has developed a following across Canada and in Europe, where she tours regularly. She has long employed her music as a force for good, as shown by three trips to Afghanistan to perform for Canadian military personnel, plus visits to the Alert base in Canada's far north and the troubled Indigenous community of Attawapiskat.
Rheaume co-founded Babes4Breasts, an initiative that, through concerts and recording projects, raised money for breast cancer charities across Canada over a 10-year period.
This is an artist with a heart as big as her talent.

MISS EMILY
Her music spans genres. Her voice soars to emotional heights. For 15 years she has captivated fans across Canada, the US and the UK with her unique combination of rootsy songs and incomparable vocals. Her unparalleled work ethic began along Ontario’s 401 corridor where she played night after night in bars; all while refining her songwriting and gaining a loyal following. Later, she graduated to regional theatres and Broadway-style shows. This multi-pronged approach paid off in opportunities to perform at larger outdoor venues like Ottawa Bluesfest and in Bobcaygeon opening for The Tragically Hip.

Dustin Arbuckle & the Damnations
Rainbow Bistro, 76 Murray Street
Friday, August 9 @ 8:30 pm

A veteran of the progressive roots music scene, Dustin Arbuckle (Formerly of Moreland & Arbuckle) continues kicking up dust with Dustin Arbuckle & The Damnations. A musician of vast appetites, he’s long held an appreciation for traditional American music in the vein of Charley Patton as well as the cross-pollinated sounds of The Band or Stax-style soul. His work with The Damnations allows for that along with occasionally forays into deep country and even jazz.

Paul Reddick
Irene’s Pub, 885 Bank Street
Friday, August 9 @ 9:30 pm; $15

Melding poetry, mystery, darkness and light, along with an extensive knowledge of the history and traditions of blues music is what makes Paul Reddick one of the most popular figures on the blues and roots music scene today. For over 25 years he’s been writing and performing his eclectic brand of blues, bringing the art form to new frontiers with his rapacious, deep vocals, masterful harmonica playing and song writing. As the unofficial poet laureate of Canadian blues, words are his weapon of choice and when he sings, it is near impossible not to listen and get lost within the songs, right alongside him and illustrating what the influential British magazine Mojo described as his “wayward brilliance.”

Well-priced accommodation available at The Cove, nearby B&Bs and motel
Westport is a beautiful historic town on the Rideau Waterway - a 90-minute drive from Ottawa, 45 minutes from Kingston.

This year we celebrate our 15th Anniversary season - making BOTR one of the longest running and best Blues Series in the country. We've put together another fabulous Line-Up of some of Canada's best Blues artists - nominees and winners of Juno Awards, Maple Blues Awards, American Blues Music Award, Western Canadian Music Award and more - bringing back some of the all time favourites who have played the Series over the years plus a few great new ones.

Visit www.BluesOnTheRideau.ca for more more details including artists' Bios, LINKS to their websites and You Tubes.

Then check your calendars, make your choices and RESERVE NOW to be sure you don't miss out on the shows. This is particularly true if you want to STAY OVERNIGHT. All the rooms at The Cove; nearby B&Bs and the Westport Station Motel usually sell out in advance on BOTR nights.

The 2019/20 Season kicks off September 13
with the incredibly talented
HARRISON KENNEDY -
Juno Award and Maple Blues Award winner and American Blues Music Award nominee - coming with  his red hot band from the Hammer!

You will note that there has been a
SMALL INCREASE in the ticket price this year - from $65 pp to $70 pp (plus HST). This is the first price increase in 5 years and is necessary to cover the increased costs of just about everything - food, drink, staff, band and Sound Engineer fees, advertising, printing costs and more.

However, when you consider the quality of the meal, the venue, the ambiance and the incredible LIVE music on these nights and compare it to just about anything else this is still one of - if not THE - best entertainment value in eastern Ontario - make that the country!

Also note that there are
3 TWO NIGHT STAND shows this season - October, November and January - giving those who have difficulty in making the Friday night shows more chances to come out on Saturday nights!

And we've
added a show in DECEMBER this year - December 13 with multiple Juno Award winners MONKEYJUNK. If you want a great place to have your Christmas Party next season this would be it! Book early!

See you next season. Have a great summer everybody!

Music By The Bay Live presents
Miss Emily
Avalon Lounge, Port Whitby Marina, 310 Watson Street West, Whitby ON
Friday, October 4 @ 8 pm; $45 + HST + fees

In the 1990s a 12-year-old Emily Fennell was making her way around Southern Ontario, singing at county fairs and winning competition after competition. She was literally finding her voice. While the other young vocalists were dazzling crowds with standards like “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” or “I Will Always Love You”, Emily was stunning judges and audiences into silent amazement with the k.d.lang version of the Patsy Cline song “3 Cigarettes and an Ashtray”. That song choice and her spellbinding performance of it, says almost all you need to know about the woman who would become Miss Emily.

She is never predictable and always willing to take a risk.

Her music spans genres, crosses barriers and creates bridges. Her voice soars to emotional heights and reaches down into the grittiness of the soul. Her performances are foot-stomping, heart-wrenching adventures in rhythm, blues, jazz and rock and roll. For 15 years Miss Emily has captivated listeners across Canada, the US and the United Kingdom with her unique combination of passion and talent.

Shawn Holt & the Teardrops
St. Francis Centre, 78 Church Street, South Ajax ON
Friday, October 25 @ 8 pm; $45 + HST + fees

Shawn Holt is the son of blues legend Magic Slim. The high energy hard-driving sound of The Teardrops is still alive and well with Holt, a chip off the old block, fronting his dad’s band. Shawn’s booming vocals is more than a little reminiscent of his dad’s, and his guitar playing while similar to Slim’s, exhibits a broader mix of classic and contemporary influences. Shawn shows himself more than capable of leading The Teardrops into a new era. The blues torch has been passed to another generation of the blues.

Shawn started playing the blues at the age of 17, when he went on the road with this father and Slim’s brother, uncle Nick Holt, and The Teardrops. Shortly after that tour with his father, Shawn realized his genetic destiny (all the Holt’s are talented musicians) and formed his own band. He has been watching, learning, and playing blues ever since.

Shawn Holt and The Teardrops are winners for Best New Artist Debut – Daddy Told Me by the Blues Foundation (BMA) 2014, and also won the 2014 Blues Blast Music Award for New Artist Debut Album – Daddy Told Me.

Erja Lyytinen
Rainbow Bistro, 76 Murray Street
Friday, August 16 @ 9 pm

The blues is truly an international phenomenon and Finland’s Erja Lyytinen (Ear-Ya LUtinen) is a shining example of how deep and widespread the music really is. The 2017 European “Guitarist of The Year” will make her Ottawa debut, with a NOT TO BE MISSED performance at The Rainbow (76 Murray St.) on Friday, August 16 at 9:00 Pm, as part of her World Tour.

In June 2018 Erja got the chance to open for American guitar icon Santana, at Helsinki’s Kaisaniemi Park, who was blow away after seeing her performance and invited her to join him on stage to jam to over of 20 000 fans. “It was inspiring to see her play. It was from the future and I like the future” said Santana. Watch the live video of Erja and Santana at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qaji2SatWmw

This summer, Erja had another dream come true when she was invited to perform as a special guest on The Legendary Downchild Blues Band’s 50th Anniversary Kickoff Party at the Toronto Jazz Festival on June 22, alongside Elwood Blues himself, Dan Aykroyd, Late Night With Letterman bandleader, Paul Shaffer, David Wilcox, Kenny Neal and former Fabulous Thunderbird’s keyboard player Gene Taylor. Erja made a major impression to the over 10,000 blues fans that packed the house on Bloor Street for the show. See Erja performing at the Toronto Jazz Festival after party with Dan Aykroyd, Paul Shaffer and Downchild at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T-8tdV1pUvU

Since first entering a recording studio some 15 years ago, singer/guitarist Erja Lyytinen has become a bona fide star in her homeland and a fixture on the international music scene. In that time, "the Finnish slide goddess" (The Blues Magazine) has recorded in places as diverse as Helsinki, London and Memphis, earning numerous accolades along the way. Rooted in both traditional and modern blues, she successfully blends styles like jazz, pop, soul and rock into a sound all her own.

Hat Fitz & Cara
LIVE on Elgin, 220 Elgin Street
Sunday, August 25; doors 6:30 pm, show 7:30 pm;
Tickets - advance $20, at the door $25

Australian/Irish Duo Hat Fitz & Cara will be in Ottawa for 1 night only celebrating their latest album "Hand It Over".

Hat Fitz is a “veteran” wild man of the blues scene in Australia. He has a record 18 straight appearances at Byron’s East Coast Blues and Roots Festival, a record that is not likely to ever be broken, and one which bears testimony to his amazing live performances and popularity with festival goers. Cara draws on her soul background (she’s toured Europe and the United States with singers such as Jamiroquai and the hugely popular Corinne Bailey-Rae), and although blessed with a sensational voice she was not content to be labelled as ‘just a singer’. She has taken to drumming duties as well as washboards, flute and tin whistle, sometimes all at once.

They have been festival favourites at Ottawa Bluesfest, CityFolk and Ontario Festival of Small Halls. Join them on August 25th, 2019 as the pair take you on a musical journey with ample, boisterous highs, and longing, bluesy lows. From the Australian outback to the Canadian shield, Hat Fitz & Cara put on a show that is guaranteed to energize and invigorate.

Philip Sayce
Rainbow Bistro, 76 Murray Street
Thursday and Friday, September 12-13 @ 9 pm; $25

One of rocks best-kept secrets.
From the age of sixteen, Philip started showing up and playing at blues jam nights at Grossmans Tavern in downtown Toronto. It wasn’t long before he was winning over admirers, including the legendary guitarist Jeff Healey, who invited Philip to join his band. Over the next few years, Philip had his first international tour experience with Healey, playing prestigious festivals and stages worldwide.
After a move to Los Angeles, Philip was invited to join Melissa Etheridge’s band following an introduction by producer John Shanks. For the next several years, Philip performed on Melissa Etheridge’s albums and was featured during her live concerts where his cosmic performances left audiences stunned.
Philip’s musical life hit a high point in 2013 with his unforgettable performance at Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Festival at New York’s Madison Square Garden. “It was a special experience that reinforced my love of music and commitment to honour the musical integrity of my heroes,” Sayce says. “I’m going out there in the studio and onstage to do my best and perform from my heart every time.”

“Mysticssippi” blues man Harry Manx has been called an “essential link” between the music of East and West, creating musical short stories that wed the tradition of the Blues with the depth of classical Indian ragas. He has created a unique sound that is hard to forget and deliciously addictive to listen to.

The Neat Coffee Shop, Burnstown ON
Thursday, October 3 @ 8 pm; $30

Multi-award-winning Australian artist Lloyd Spiegel returns to Canada delivering one of the most unique solo concert experiences in the world.  Blending jaw-dropping guitar chops with a commanding voice, powerful songwriting, storytelling and comedy, it’s no wonder that he’s described as an “Oz Roots and Blues Icon” by Rolling Stone Australia.

Spiegel is a trail blazer in his field and one of his country's most recognized guitarists, recently being named in Australian Guitar Magazine's list of the 50 greatest Australian guitarists of all time.  “A guitarist almost without peer, Spiegel deconstructs how the blues guitar is supposed to operate, makes sweet love to it, then kicks it out the back door.” Australian Guitar Player Magazine

Myles Goodwyn
Neat Coffee Shop, 1715 Calabogie Road, Burnstown ON
Friday, October 25 @ 8 pm; $60

Singer, guitarist, writer, producer and leader of the band April Wine, Myles Goodwyn’s passion and drive shaped and directed the group from its earliest beginnings. He is the only remaining original member of the group since the inception of April Wine in 1969. Goodwyn grew up poor and is the classic “small-town kid makes good” success story. As a young teen, Goodwyn honed his skills, playing in bands such as East Gate Sanctuary and Woody’s Termites. From the very beginning, Goodwyn plotted the course of the band. His unique but classic rock voice gives April Wine a distinct and immediately recognizable sound. Ranging from hard rock classics to soulful ballads, his vocal range and style can really grab a hold of you. His songwriting skills are prolific.

He has penned virtually every April Wine song. He has a knack with words and seems to have an ability to write a catchy tune at will. Through the ups and downs and changing faces of the band, the one thing that has remained constant is Myles Goodwyn. Even today and with their latest release and shift in direction, his voice is as strong and apparent as ever.

Now in its fourth decade, April Wine continues to charge ahead as one of Canada’s very best rock bands. And as far as rock history goes, Myles Goodwyn is already a living legend (especially in the annals of Canadian rock history), being known as one of the all-time greats.

On top of all the old classics that we all know and love, Myles will showcase some of his tunes from his new album as well. Tickets on sale now, limited dinner reservations available before the show!

NPR from Canton NY
For those who live south of the city, OBS member Bob Cavan notes that the National Public Radio (NPR) radio signal at 89.5 FM in Canton NY comes in pretty strong in Manotick. Bob recommends two shows in particular. Bob says “The Blue Note” Tuesdays 3 pm-5 pm, and “The Radio Bob Show” Wednesdays 3 pm-5 pm are both excellent shows – blues, ‘50s & ‘60s, rock & roll, R&B.

Unsung and On The Side
With Carolyn Fe
Tuesdays, 7-9 pm
Re-broadcast Saturday 10 am – noon & Sunday 2-4 pm (all times EST)
It’s all about the Blues, Jazz and its derivatives from around the globe and just around the corner. Songs rarely heard, from the very first recordings all the way to indie artists who consciously push the envelope to the next generation sounds of the genre; some older releases will be spun - just because the album in old, doesn't mean it's forgotten, thus the "On The Side" part of the show's title.
