Al Lerman is a multi-instrumentalist, singer and songwriter. He was founder and
leader of the 2X Juno Award winning band Fathead, and along the way built a
solid career touring as an acoustic solo act, accompanying himself on guitar
and rack harmonica. An engaging and skilled artist, his shows often feature
humorous anecdotes interspersed between great blues songs. He is regarded
among the top harmonica players in the country and his prowess on the
instrument has earned him no less than ten Maple Blues Award nominations in
that instrument category. Both his harp and wailing tenor saxophone have
been heard on countless recordings and live sessions with some of the best in
the blues. A full-time musician for over forty years, Al casts a magical spell
on his audience wherever he goes.

Following up on the
success of their self-titled album from 2014, The Paul DesLauriers Band returns
with the aptly titled “Relentless”, a genuine blues-rock escapade featuring 10
new songs encompassing their most original and powerful work to date.
Relentless indeed if you consider the pace at which the band has been working
with touring, writing and recording. The awards they keep racking up only
confirm that hard work pays off. Adding to their multiple Maple Blues and Lys
Blues awards and nominations they had a number one album on the iTunes Canada
Blues Chart and in January 2016 they took home 2nd Place among 119
competing bands from around the world at the 32nd annual International Blues
Challenge, held by the Blues Foundation in Memphis.
Hot on the heels of
that win they returned to Montreal to complete writing and recording “Relentless”
and the result captures the very essence of The Paul DesLauriers Band. A true
collaborative effort on every front, singer-guitarist Paul DesLauriers, bassist
Greg Morency and drummer Sam Harrisson approached this recording the same way
they have in the past, three men playing together in the same room, capturing
performances live off the floor; and this time they applied that philosophy to
the whole creative process, writing and arranging all the music together from
the ground up. Lyrics were penned by DesLauriers and long-time collaborator
Alec McElcheran. Through every track, the personalities shine through, but what
is most striking is the unity and the maturity radiating from this trio at the
top of their game. If the last album, 2014’s award-winning self-titled release,
solidified the bands stance in the Canadian blues scene, this album as well as
their remarkable achievements over the last two years cements their position as
one of the top Canadian blues-rock acts and will maximize their influence on
the international stage.

heck will they do next!
Having made a splash
with their first concert performed at the bottom of a drained swimming pool in

Well, now that he's
got our attention he's made his mind up to make good use of it. “Monkey
Brain” is a guitar tour de force, a gritty mash of the history of roots guitar
music torn down and built back up again. The title track is a grimy ode to our
inner, more base impulses: "When life gets to me. My head starts to
change. I give in to my Monkey Brain". On the swampy ‘Charity Case’, Sean
pleads with his lover: "Why do you treat me like some charity case? It's
not your business if I'm sober or straight"... we've all been there. ‘Hard
Luck’ is a 21st-century gospel dirge that has Sean's searing lead guitar
crescendo with a one-note Neil Young-style squeal into its signature riff with
layered gospel harmonies pleading wordlessly over deep piano drones. ‘Living In
The Past’ eases us in with Sean's falsetto before the album's engine room Adam
Warner (drums) & Mark McIntyre (bass) launch into its signature groove.
Sean's guitar weaves in and out and Emma-Lee's backing vocals push the
whole thing over the top. The album takes a turn with ‘Goin' Hobo’'s
junk-yard percussion and tongue-in-cheek lyrics about being sick of the grind
and packing it all in for the hobo life cowritten with Juno winner Steve
Strongman. The album closes with the duo of ‘Monsters’, an acoustic stomper
keeping with the theme of fighting one's own demons and ‘Get Burned’, yet more
evidence of Sean's guitar prowess, pivoting effortlessly between clean sinewy
playing and ultra-dirty riff-mongering. Throughout, Sean delivers stories of
personal struggle and triumph after living with depression for many years.
Realizing that his grief could be put to constructive use, he began writing
about everything that caused him pain, fear and heartache. “Monkey Brain” is
his blues and he comes by it honestly.

True-blue Ottawans already know: the Dueling Pianos are Tyler Kealey and Dave Kalil on two sets of ivory keys, with guitarist Todd Huckabone and the audience acting as referee. Each unique show features an endless series of classic hits spanning decades of music. Playing a blend of requests from the audience, blistering guitar and piano solos, three-part harmonies, and random impromptu comedic moments, their show has won over the crowds for which they perform time after time. The group gained a legion of loyal fans as a regular Saturday act at Sens House in the Byward Market.
Dave has been entertaining audiences across Canada since 1976 as a solo piano player and singer but has had the most fun this past decade playing with – or against – singer-songwriter and fellow pianist Tyler. milestone. For a hard-touring and recording band, however, a decade is a
sweat-soaked, anecdote-amassing feat. Appropriately, the corresponding
anniversary gift is way better something made of tin.
Winner of 2018’s Blues Album of the Year Juno Award (their second overall), the latest and fifth release from singer/guitarist and harp player Steve Marriner, drummer Matt Sobb, and guitarist Tony D is precisely the kind of corker you’d expect from a trio of musical veterans who, between them, have boosted luminaries from Fabulous Thunderbird Kim Wilson to Buddy Guy, the late Jeff Healey to the lamented Stevie Ray Vaughan.
Launched in Ottawa in 2008, MonkeyJunk —handle inspired by delta blues great Son House, who once intoned, “I’m talking about the blues, I ain’t talking ’bout no monkeyjunk!” — have consistently updated contemporary blues with a blistering mix of chops, soul, grit, humour and harmony.

Recorded mainly over three days in late January in a small studio in Montreal's Notre Dame de Grace borough, the recording captures the essence of Lutes' soulful voice and rhythmic guitar style, enveloped by a group of players who are no stranger to his groove. Featuring 12 new originals, including two co-writes with award-winning Americana songwriter Dale Boyle, and the forgotten John Prine gem ‘Rocky Mountain Time’, the album digs deep into the roots of Canadian and American music and delivers another strong statement.
