Nathaniel Rateliff
& the Night Sweats
The Arena at TD Place
Wednesday, September
19; $40-$55
The
new release by Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats is the aptly titled
“Tearing at the Seams”, a vivacious and inventive full-band record, with
significant contributions from all eight members of The Night Sweats. These
songs are grounded in old-school soul and R&B but are far too urgent for
the retro or revivalist tag. There are familiar elements of soul and garage
rock, but also jazz and folk and even country. The album shows The Night Sweats
tearing at their own seams, at their own sturdy sound, at their long-held
definitions of friend and family and band. It’s an album that builds on the
sound of their debut but dramatically redefines what they can do and where they
can go next.

Emily
Burgess (guitar), Jesse Whiteley (keyboards) and Jonny Wong (tenor saxophone)
are three musicians with plenty of experience between them performing,
recording, and touring across the Canadian blues scene, most notably from their
time playing together in the 24th Street Wailers (2009-2014).
They
have spent years honing their craft and getting to know each other’s playing
styles and nuances. It reflects Burgess, Whiteley & Wong as a cohesive
unit, where each member anticipates what the other will do. They’ve performed
all over North America at festivals such as the Vancouver Island Music
Festival, The Blues Sur Seine, Folk on the Rocks, and the Ottawa Blues
festival. They have had the privilege of sharing the stage with artists such as
Jimmie Vaughan, Matt Andersen, Morgan Davis, Jackie Richardson, and the
Sojourners to name a few.
Their
show revisits what makes music so compelling: passion and fun. With a honking
horn, blazing guitar, and slick piano, their performances are known to be
high-energy crowd pleasers that get the audience on their feet. Coupled with
their on-stage chemistry it provides an experience you won’t soon forget.
Burgess, Whiteley and Wong are joined by the dynamic combination of brothers
Rico and Marcus Browne on bass and drums respectively.

Myles Goodwyn Blues
Project
St. Francis Centre, 78 Church Street South,
Ajax
Friday, September 28
@ 8 pm; $65 in advance, $75 at the door
Myles
Goodwyn is the singer, guitarist, writer, producer and leader of the
band April Wine who’s drive shaped and directed the group from its
earliest beginnings in 1969.
His
passion for the blues began in the ‘60s when he started listening to American
blues artists like BB King, Howling Wolf, Muddy
Waters along with Taj Mahal and many others. All the blues
songs Goodwyn wrote were not going to appear on an April
Wine album so he kept saving them for the blues album he knew he was going
to make, but only got recently got around to recording them. “Myles
Goodwyn And Friends Of The Blues” is the result of these sessions.
The
Myles Goodwyn Band is a six-piece band from the east coast of Canada.
Based out of Nova Scotia, the band consists, along with Myles
Goodwyn (vocals, guitar), Dave Champagne (keys, background
vocals), Warren Robert (guitar & vocals), Mike
Carrol (drums and percussion), Chris Mitchell (bass)
and Brad Reid (sax(s), violin, flute, percussion and background
vocals).

NAC PRESENTS
Shakura S’Aida
NAC Azrieli Studio, 1
Elgin Street
Saturday, September
29 @ 8 pm
Shakura’s
long-simmering career initially moved into high gear in 2008 with a triumph at
the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, when she earned the runner-up
position, competing against more than 100 bands from more than 20 different
countries. The success of that win has taken Shakura to almost 30 countries in
the past 10 years.
Shakura
S’Aida has been consistently thrilling audiences with her powerful pipes for
years, most recently as a guest host on CBC Radio 2’s Weekend Morning and
Tonic. As a veteran of the international music scene, she’s performed both as a
featured artist with musicians like Jimmy Smith, Lee Oskar (WAR), Bettye
LaVette and Keb Mo’, as well as an award-winning solo artist.
After
a 6-year hiatus, Shakura is back in the studio; this time with co-producers
Donna Grantis (Prince/3rd Eye Girl), Keb’ Mo’, Lance Anderson (Oscar Peterson)
and Roger Costa (Jeff Healey). The new album will feature collaborations with
international artists including Eric Gales & Michael Kaeshammer and is
scheduled for release Spring 2018.

CanAfrica Blues

Monday, October 1
Contact
Dave Brennan for ticket info elwood66@videotron.ca
From
Doc: This year's "CanAfrica Blues" theme features my good friend
Albert Frost. How cool is that? I met this West Cape, South Africa based artist
during my Zulu Skies Tour in 2016. Since then, we've had a ball performing at
some of Africa's best theatres and festivals. This is a guy who counts Lonnie
Johnson, Jimi Hendrix, and Ali Farka Toure (who he actually played with) among
his top musical influences. He does rock, folk, jazz, traditional west African,
and blues. He's a real blues guy. But he's not terribly concerned about genre.
Or confined by it. Music is a language that comes of stories, and in Frost's
Africa there is no shortage of stories. South Africa has long been a unique
musical cauldron, and Albert's art reflects this. This year, he's my guest on
my Blues Highway across North America. CanAfrica Blues. I'm thrilled to have
him along.
Ride
shotgun on an epic, blues road tour as Doc MacLean and Albert Frost unite in a
four-wheel, continental drift. Mixing Delta with west Africa, Son House with
Ali Farka Toura, electric with acoustic, new stories with old... This
Canadian-African collaboration will surprise and delight as it rolls out across
ten Canadian provinces and a couple of territories.

MonkeyJunk
Rainbow Bistro, 76
Murray Street
Friday &
Saturday, October 12-13 @ 9 pm; $20
Canadian
Blues-Rockers MonkeyJunk, whose career-best 5th album “Time To Roll”
recently netted their 2nd Juno Award, hit the road this year traveling
from east to west, visiting key venues and festivals. By almost any ordinary
metric, like a marriage or a job, 10 years is a respectable milestone. For a
hard-touring and recording band, however, a decade is a sweat-soaked,
anecdote-amassing feat. Appropriately, the corresponding anniversary gift is
way better than something made of tin. The latest release from singer/guitarist
and harp player Steve Marriner, drummer Matt Sobb, and guitarist Tony D is
precisely the kind of corker you’d expect from a trio of musical veterans who,
between them, have boosted luminaries from Fabulous Thunderbird Kim Wilson to
Buddy Guy, the late Jeff Healey to the lamented Stevie Ray Vaughan. Bluesmen
don’t come more accomplished than the dudes in MonkeyJunk.
Launched
in Ottawa in 2008, MonkeyJunk, handle inspired by delta blues great Son House,
who once intoned, “I’m talking about the blues, I ain’t talking bout no
monkeyjunk!”, have consistently updated contemporary blues with a blistering
mix of chops, soul, grit, humour and harmony. In addition to their pair of Juno
Award wins (out of three nominations), MonkeyJunk has also netted an impressive
21 Maple Blues Awards, two Canadian Independent Music Awards, and a Blues Music
Award (USA) for Best New Artist, for 2009’s sizzling “Tiger In Your Tank”. And
while that recognition is swell, all band members agree that the real thrill of
playing in MonkeyJunk is just that – playing, especially live, where the music’s
ecstatic sway on crowds is right there to behold.

Paul DesLauriers Band
Rainbow Bistro, 76 Murray Street
Friday, November 2 @ 9 pm; $15
Following up on the
success of their self-titled album from 2014, The Paul DesLauriers Band returns
with the aptly titled “Relentless”, a genuine blues-rock escapade featuring 10
new songs encompassing their most original and powerful work to date.
Relentless indeed if you consider the pace at which the band has been working
with touring, writing and recording. The awards they keep racking up only
confirm that hard work pays off. Adding to their multiple Maple Blues and Lys
Blues awards and nominations they had a number one album on the iTunes Canada
Blues Chart and in January 2016 they took home 2nd Place among 119
competing bands from around the world at the 32nd annual International Blues
Challenge, held by the Blues Foundation in Memphis.
Hot on the heels of
that win they returned to Montreal to complete writing and recording “Relentless”
and the result captures the very essence of The Paul DesLauriers Band. A true
collaborative effort on every front, singer-guitarist Paul DesLauriers, bassist
Greg Morency and drummer Sam Harrisson approached this recording the same way
they have in the past, three men playing together in the same room, capturing
performances live off the floor; and this time they applied that philosophy to
the whole creative process, writing and arranging all the music together from
the ground up. Lyrics were penned by DesLauriers and long-time collaborator
Alec McElcheran. Through every track, the personalities shine through, but what
is most striking is the unity and the maturity radiating from this trio at the
top of their game. If the last album, 2014’s award-winning self-titled release,
solidified the bands stance in the Canadian blues scene, this album as well as
their remarkable achievements over the last two years cements their position as
one of the top Canadian blues-rock acts and will maximize their influence on
the international stage.

Victoria BC's Jesse Roper is magnetic. With an explosive live show, the quality and charisma of his versatile blues sound rooted in soul, rock and country is as approachable as his charm. With much anticipation, Jesse’s newest album Access to Infinity is due out fall of 2017. The nostalgic may appreciate his throw back vibe akin to Stevie Ray Vaughan and vintage Texas blue. Jesse Roper's music remains current while his youthful energy captivates audiences while his knock out live performance blows them away. Incapable of holding back, Jesse always delivers the show of his life.

Dueling Pianos
Centrepointe Studio
Theatre, 101 Centrepointe Drive
Friday, November 16 @ 8 pm
Friday, November 16 @ 8 pm
True-blue Ottawans already know: the Dueling Pianos are Tyler Kealey and Dave Kalil on two sets of ivory keys, with guitarist Todd Huckabone and the audience acting as referee. Each unique show features an endless series of classic hits spanning decades of music. Playing a blend of requests from the audience, blistering guitar and piano solos, three-part harmonies, and random impromptu comedic moments, their show has won over the crowds for which they perform time after time. The group gained a legion of loyal fans as a regular Saturday act at Sens House in the Byward Market.
Dave has been entertaining audiences across Canada since 1976 as a solo piano player and singer but has had the most fun this past decade playing with – or against – singer-songwriter and fellow pianist Tyler. The two claim influences from musicians like Supertramp and the Eagles, from Billy Joel to the Beatles. In the intimate setting and beautiful acoustics of Centrepointe’s Studio theatre, the Dueling Pianos’ effortless skill and energy will delight newcomers and long-time fans alike!

By
almost any ordinary metric, like a marriage or a job, 10 years is a respectable
milestone. For a hard-touring and recording band, however, a decade is a
sweat-soaked, anecdote-amassing feat. Appropriately, the corresponding
anniversary gift is way better something made of tin.
Winner of 2018’s Blues Album of the Year Juno Award (their second overall), the latest and fifth release from singer/guitarist and harp player Steve Marriner, drummer Matt Sobb, and guitarist Tony D is precisely the kind of corker you’d expect from a trio of musical veterans who, between them, have boosted luminaries from Fabulous Thunderbird Kim Wilson to Buddy Guy, the late Jeff Healey to the lamented Stevie Ray Vaughan.
Launched in Ottawa in 2008, MonkeyJunk —handle inspired by delta blues great Son House, who once intoned, “I’m talking about the blues, I ain’t talking ’bout no monkeyjunk!” — have consistently updated contemporary blues with a blistering mix of chops, soul, grit, humour and harmony.
MonkeyJunk plays for keeps, as evidenced by the 10 electrifying tracks on their latest album, their first ever to feature bass guitar. “We wanted to push ourselves to work hard and to work efficiently and focused — to see what we could come up with in a shorter period of time,” drummer Sobb explains of “Time To Roll”. “The result is a brash, groovy-as-always collection of songs that show where the band has been and where we have arrived in many years of writing, recording, and touring.”
In addition to the above-mentioned pair of Juno Award wins (out of three nominations), MonkeyJunk has also netted an impressive 21 Maple Blues Awards, two Canadian Independent Music Awards, and a Blues Music Award (USA) for Best New Artist, for 2009’s sizzling “Tiger In Your Tank”. And while that recognition is swell, all band members agree that the real thrill of playing in MonkeyJunk is just that — playing, especially live, where the music’s ecstatic sway on crowds is right there to behold.
